Not really when you include the full headline "A trial of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine on children has stopped giving out jabs while the UK's medicines regulator investigates a possible link with rare blood clots in adults."

I meant it to mean it's a non-story, it is what you would expect to happen in a safe trial

I think it shows how important they take the safety of their patients. There have been 30 incidents of these blood-clots (seven died) out of 18.5 million patients who received the jab. Hopefully the study will be able to provide a way to either identify the patients at risk, or to prevent/treat any reactions.

It's worth not just putting a pithy interpretation to a fragment of the evaluation, unless you're on an unemployed training scheme, desperate for a Dailly Trail headline assistant etc.

Trials are often paused for collection of and data reviews

Its interesting how in the uk we have given out far more astra vaccines than Germany or Norway and yet they have detected more cases of this blood clotting ..and now they have discovered the evidence, the antibody I guess triggered by the vaccine that causes it. Two independent research centres in Norway ( I think) and Germany...came to the same results.

In the uk we have just been saying ...well it could happen normally in that many people etc...and it seems, not bothered to try and understand it.

They are due to publish the results in the Lancet..

It's on DW the German version of bbc, interestingly nothing in the uk news on the Norwegian and German discovery ...

Children should not be anywhere near these experimental injections at all, they are not at risk and should be left along and let their immune systems develop. What's wrong with these people????

its being blown out of proportion, up to 50% of the population are actively encouraged to take hormonal birth control for up to approx 25 years of their lives , which they wont get as 2 injections then done, its continuous medication from puberty to menopause, at any point that they want to prevent pregnancy, we know that medication can cause blood clots, the risk rate is higher than the vaccine numbers, we still actively encourage it and literally nobody ever talks about it or cares

but now blood clots will be the death of the human race

See the issue is this.... if you were to take the 40 to 50 yr group the rate of people getting this is 1 for every 2.5 millions people

If you were to take the same 2.5 million people and not give them any vaccine.... about 20,000 people would die of COVID

So... pick a poison

Again, these are experimental mRNA injections with no long term guarantees having only been in existence for less than a year.

So now you're happy that they are being tried on children to see what happens???

These people have no idea what the long term consequences are this is plain child abuse nothing less.

The Oxford AZ vaccine is not an mRNA vaccine

Sorry to burst your bubble

Yes I am delighted that they're being tested on children - and the mRNA are ones too, as young as six months.

Does this worry you? Maybe you should relax. Restrictions are easing, life's improving. Enjoy.

An Italian doctor said yes earlier today, but I'm not clear if he was speaking in a personal capacity or if he had evidence backing it.

But it's lower risk than the pill, as noted.

It's the understanding of the mechanism of what's happening thats important...not just the numbers of cases ...there may be milder or other effects...that our trial did not pick up ...or things that occur over time...and have not yet developed ...

Look at the recebt Cumberelege inquiry into pelvic meshes and primrodos ...they have been used for decades..harming ladies ..and all approved and presumably trialled...the results are horrendous and damning ...how it has not been picked up before is unbelievable....and this is in 2020 not 1920...it takes a independent judge to look at the evidence impartially and see things doctors seem to have been blind to ..

My 3 are old enough at 15, 13 and 10 to make their own decisions if the jabs do gain approval for use in children

I think it's a very brave thing to enrol children in clinical trials like these. I'm glad people are doing so. (I don't have children, I'm not saying "and they must be sacrificed" - it's just, I don't have the option to make that decision)

absolutely its important to find out why, but that hasn’t stopped people jumping to conclusions that we have issues with the vaccine - the wait for why works both ways

and even when we do find out why it then has to be weighed up against risks of not taking the vaccine at which point it is likely to be determined we are still safer to take it than not , much like all the other medicines we take that have possible side effects in a small number of the population

It's our (uk medics medical researchers etc ).lack of apparent curiosity or caution that concerns me ...we invented the vaccine trialled it etc and yet it's the germans etc that discover this side effect ...do the research and solve the problem in the time we are being told...what are valid points...its a small number, all medicines carry some risk etc...which I accept...but you would think we would have spotted the issue and been first to figure it out ...rather than, it feels, get what seems a slightly dismissive response...and complete lack of coverage in the uk press which I find very weird ...

its being blown out of proportion, up to 50% of the population are actively encouraged to take hormonal birth control for up to approx 25 years of their lives , which they wont get as 2 injections then done, its continuous medication from puberty to menopause, at any point that they want to prevent pregnancy, we know that medication can cause blood clots, the risk rate is higher than the vaccine numbers, we still actively encourage it and literally nobody ever talks about it or cares

but now blood clots will be the death of the human race

I'm not anti vax but I am very cynical about evidence based medicine...and statistics

absolutely its important to find out why, but that hasn’t stopped people jumping to conclusions that we have issues with the vaccine - the wait for why works both ways

and even when we do find out why it then has to be weighed up against risks of not taking the vaccine at which point it is likely to be determined we are still safer to take it than not , much like all the other medicines we take that have possible side effects in a small number of the population

It's our (uk medics medical researchers etc ).lack of apparent curiosity or caution that concerns me ...we invented the vaccine trialled it etc and yet it's the germans etc that discover this side effect ...do the research and solve the problem in the time we are being told...what are valid points...its a small number, all medicines carry some risk etc...which I accept...but you would think we would have spotted the issue and been first to figure it out ...rather than, it feels, get what seems a slightly dismissive response...and complete lack of coverage in the uk press which I find very weird ..."

The press will not be telling the complete story, of course. I'm sure it's being looked into - the English speaking science communicators I listen to are saying things like "below background levels"

I'm on the fence about it. If they're old enough, like mine, to be able to make an informed choice then crack on

Then again, it's on the parents conscience if they're not and they volunteer them for a trial and they end up fucked, for want of a better word"

We use a huge number of meds in our children that have never been tested on children due to this very issue. We make educated guesses on dosages by body weight etc. If we're going to use therapeutic agents in children, we need to test them...

Air travel causes blood clotting in about 1% of travellers in flights over 4 hours. (Not just flights, bus, train or car journeys are equally 'dangerous').

I am happy to subject myself and my children to a risk that is hundreds of thousands times lower.

Especially when you consider the alternative.

That the licencing organisation is checking, fills me with confidence, not trepidation.

We certainly are more obese than them, we certainly have a different demographic profile to them, we certainly are more sedentary than them. It's good to investigate and keep it as safe as possible.oh and we have a very different health provision than them.

Is the profile of the people who have had clots known? As in does it fit a small age demographic for example?

I was surprised (although perhaps shouldn’t have been) to find that most drugs are tested on an ‘average male’ as it were, with fewer female candidates & then dosages worked out via height & weight type calculations despite hugely different hormonal profiles in the genders as a starting point.

The points about long term studies are correct for any drug or treatment...once it is approved & in use any prescription or use is a long term trial by definition.

Likewise.... I only found that out recently too.... Astonishing in this day and age with inclusivity and gender awareness to the fore, that they are considered acceptable trials. Just goes to show we shouldn't assume anything.

Hopefully the study will be able to provide a way to either identify the patients at risk, or to prevent/treat any reactions.

Cant they use the same system of any one dying within 28 days? ...

See the issue is this.... if you were to take the 40 to 50 yr group the rate of people getting this is 1 for every 2.5 millions people

If you were to take the same 2.5 million people and not give them any vaccine.... about 20,000 people would die of COVID

So... pick a poison"

7 deaths out of 18 million. That's about a 1:2.5 million risk, similar to being hit by lightning in the UK. Of course it needs to be investigated and sensible precautions taken, but it also needs to be put into perspective. Only time is going to reveal how safe these vaccines are so we can establish their overall effectiveness and benefit.

Are you saying "record anyone dying within 28 days of receiving a vaccine as 'died post vaccine'".

The answer is that they do record that, but the figures indicate that there is no increase in fatality for those who have been vaccinated. The figures just demonstrate that the vaccines are inherently safe.

Like people have already said clots can occur at anytime

Specially during long flights or any journey where blood flow may become restricted through sitting still

Other medication such as women's pill can also increase chances of clotting

As can eating too much foods containing vit k

"I think it shows how important they take the safety of their patients. There have been 30 incidents of these blood-clots (seven died) out of 18.5 million patients who received the jab. Hopefully the study will be able to provide a way to either identify the patients at risk, or to prevent/treat any reactions.

------

Cant they use the same system of any one dying within 28 days? ...

Are you saying "record anyone dying within 28 days of receiving a vaccine as 'died post vaccine'".

The answer is that they do record that, but the figures indicate that there is no increase in fatality for those who have been vaccinated. The figures just demonstrate that the vaccines are inherently safe.

Cal

------

One of the "side effects" posted for the Moderna vaccine include someone who got struck by lightning.

... So, they already do this

It seems fair to assume that the vaccine will attract lightning strikes. I shall endeavour to keep my Faraday Cage to hand once I've had my jab.

Cal"

Driving home then? Or the train or bus I guess..

Not really when you include the full headline "A trial of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine on children has stopped giving out jabs while the UK's medicines regulator investigates a possible link with rare blood clots in adults."

Children should not be anywhere near these experimental injections at all, they are not at risk and should be left along and let their immune systems develop. What's wrong with these people????

Anybody who can be infected by the virus could be a recipient of the vaccine. That the manufacturers only trialled initially on over 16s, doesn't mean that they don't or shouldn't extend that range. It's typical scientific research to progress in stages.

A bit confused here, vaccine is approved but they are still experimenting on people in the field so to speak.

My cynical side says it`s an attempt at herd immunity disguised as legit protection/prevention.

My common sense side says, well they knew about this virus for along time, like 50 or more years so they`ve had plenty of time to get a basic vaccine and they are tweaking it for the new variants.

If I had children I would say no to giving it to them until fully tested in the lab.

That’s down to the parents/guardians to decide.

I don’t think about the decisions of everyone else.

It’s my choice to not make my kids have the vaccine, if they decide when they are old enough then it’s entirely up to them.

But if there's no trials on children, there's no evidence base upon which to recommend the correct dose of a drug for your child. There's no evidence for the safety of any vaccine that your child may have had, etc.

of course its brave to allow your child to take part in a trial - you are putting your own child at potential risk for the benefit of all other children that come after them (albeit we don’t just jump into testing kids blind we have a fair idea of safety before it ever gets that far)

without any kids every taking part in trials we wouldn’t have any medicine approved for children and we would just have to let them suffer through or potentially die depending on the illness, til they hit adulthood

its an admirable thing to take part in - like i said i get why people don’t want their kids involved but don’t understand why people would want to oppose other families making a brave decision that we can all ultimately benefit from

I am not anti vax in any way.

I have gotten the normal flu vax for many years. And paid for it myself.

I have had polio, yellow fever and rabies vax for working in far flung places.

But these vaccines seem to be forced very hard on people.

There is no research on these in the long term. When I asked my health insurance about side effects they told me I am not covered for adverse reactions or side effects related to covid 19 vaccination

So I am not anti vax, or a conspiracy tin foil had nutter. But I have no trust in politicians, they care nothing for the minions below them. Here in Ireland 400 a day that's A DAY, develope cancer and they have stopped all cancer testing for the last year. Unlike covid with a 99.99% survival rate, not too many people will beat cancer especially if it is not detected early.

So.. Will you be letting get vaccinated when it has been trialled and is reasonably successful on other children ?

What if all children being vaccinated eventually becomes a pre requisite in the future which it might one day? .. Schools, youth clubs, cinemas, ballet and other after school stuff could insist on it..

Would you allow it then or stick to your guns and still say no ?

Curious to know..

the right side of the river

Official government information is that covid does not have any effect on children and young adults.

Part of the problem is the governments are so inconsistent in their messages and change them to suit whatever current agenda they want to push.

"Well my kids won't be having the miracle jab.

I won’t be letting them experiment on my kids either

A serious question - how do you think other meds/drugs/vaccines your kids may use/have used have been proven safe in the dosages prescribed?

Think we both know the answer to that really. Other people are willing to let their kids be trialled on. I’m not willing to let my kids be trialled on so they won’t be.

Why is it okay for others to participate in trials for the benefit of your children, and what would happen if everyone took the same stance and no children participated in clinical trials?

i can understand not wanting your own kids to take part in trials

what i cant understand is being outraged at those who are brave enough to do it for what is ultimately your childs benefit

I’m not outraged. I simply stated I wouldn’t let them experiment on my children either. What other people do with their kids isn’t any of my business to be honest.

We all have different opinions. I wouldn’t call it brave to let your child be trialled on personally but each to their own.

where did i say i was referring to you ?

of course its brave to allow your child to take part in a trial - you are putting your own child at potential risk for the benefit of all other children that come after them (albeit we don’t just jump into testing kids blind we have a fair idea of safety before it ever gets that far)

without any kids every taking part in trials we wouldn’t have any medicine approved for children and we would just have to let them suffer through or potentially die depending on the illness, til they hit adulthood

its an admirable thing to take part in - like i said i get why people don’t want their kids involved but don’t understand why people would want to oppose other families making a brave decision that we can all ultimately benefit from

Well you quoted part of a convo I was talking in.

Like I said you have your opinion but I still wouldn’t class it as brave or an admirable thing to do

yes but there were comments after yours that i was agreeing with , the forum doesn’t let you selectively quote just one person unless you go through manually deleting it all

Welll you can’t really complain if someone writes back to you If you didn’t manually delete their comments and quoted a convo they are in.

i haven’t complained i just said i wasn’t referring to you when you got defensive because you happened to be further back in a chain that was quoted "

I was one comment back and that’s fine replace complained with question

Well I can’t stop other parents putting their children forward for clinically trials can I so considering I have no input into what other people do or don’t do with their children that’s why it’s ok as it’s their choice and not mine.

Obviously if no one put their children forward then there wouldn’t be any trials on children.

But if there's no trials on children, there's no evidence base upon which to recommend the correct dose of a drug for your child. There's no evidence for the safety of any vaccine that your child may have had, etc.

Well we don’t have to worry about that do we as there are other parents out there willing to let there children be trialled on. That’s their choice. We can go back and forth all day but the bottom line is some parents are willing to let their children be trialled on and others will not.

Covid hardly effects a child so I won’t be putting them forward to be experimented on and I may refuse the vaccine full stop for them. My choice.

I never said I was happy for others to risk their kids so let’s get that right. I simply said as they are not my children it is not my choice and ‘isn’t much of one’ is too much of one for my children as far as I’m concerned as it’s my choice like you said.

I’m unsure if I will give my children the vaccine.

Considering that situation is completely made up, I haven’t put any thought into it and I won’t sit here and ponder ifs and buts about what I will do until it becomes the law. Then il make a choice.

"A bit confused here, vaccine is approved but they are still experimenting on people in the field so to speak.

My cynical side says it`s an attempt at herd immunity disguised as legit protection/prevention.

My common sense side says, well they knew about this virus for along time, like 50 or more years so they`ve had plenty of time to get a basic vaccine and they are tweaking it for the new variants.

If I had children I would say no to giving it to them until fully tested in the lab."

When there are one in a couple of million people having a specific reaction, you would have to be "VERY Lucky" to have someone on the trials panel who has that reaction. Unfortunately, testing in a petri-dish and clinical trials only go to show that it is safe "in general". You will never come up against every possible condition until you roll it out.

Hopefully the scientists investigating will quickly understand what is happening and how to identify those at risk to prevent more deaths.

"Well that was a bit of a rant by me.

What was my point I wonder"

Surely, most drugs/treatments/vaccines have very little data of any description when they are first released.

Also how long do we class as long term data? Each of the current vaccines has been in testing for over a year, you would assume that all the original test subjects are still being monitored (I hope they are), so that provides some long-ish term data.
