Herd immunity is not a "thing" for this virus. At least at this stage. It should have happened in Manaus in Brazil didn't.

The Manaus situation, I think the data are messy and I'm not 100% sure that there's consensus on what's happening there.

We haven't resorted to 1 solution only yet, hence we still have restrictions on activities, getting together, shop types open, mask usage indoors etc. And the exact threshold for herd immunity to be reached has variables affecting it, so we still have uncertainty about it.

The objective is reduction and sustained suppression, via this range of tactics and vaccination. We can see how Israel has fared, after record vaccination levels, whilst their economy is more broadly open.

The variants circulating in any country will affect results, subject to vaccine efficacy against them, including any reduction levels in infectivity to others.

The greater the volumes of data that we have upon how strategy effectiveness are, the easier it becomes to refine them, based on that global and local data. New emerging variants can be monitored and responded to accordingly. Personal immunity will largely hold good and, with reduced levels of infection around, the virus should continue at low levels in circulation. It's better to look at all data sources, as extraneous data can be better seen in that context.
