"Deaths in the UK have fallen below the five-year average for the first time since the summer.

Experts say it means the winter wave of Covid deaths has ended and lockdown and the vaccine rollout have saved lives."

Waiting to hear from the idiots telling us this is fake news.

That’s good news indeed

It shows that lockdown works in saving lives; same goes for the vaccine too.

"Still taking about 3rd wave?"

I think there will still be multiple waves ahead, but we should not have the hospitalisations and deaths thanks to the vaccine so it’ll be no worse that the seasonal waves we get with flu. There will still be some deaths but nothing like the magnitude we have seen over the last year, so no need for curtails on freedom.

Or it’ll be a new mutation and it’ll be back to square 1 ... but that’s not as likely

Though that particular overall figure is below the yearly average, today's daily COVID-19 death and infection rate figures are virtually identical to the same time last week...

....meaning that they've stopped falling, and have flattened out - which isn't such good news...

Let's hope people don't see this as the green light to go crazy and relax.

We need to keep fighting the good fight for everyone's sake.

You can’t base it on one days results. Better to look at the 7 day average and that is still going down

Sadly history shows that they will do exactly that. Let’s hope we learn from our mistakes this time and keep our heads.

For the past 12 months I've been singing the words "Coro na virus, coro na virus, coro na virus, Covid nineteen" to the tune of Hava Nagila..

Obviously I was subconsciously on to something...

But the number of tests have gone up by 80% due to the testing of schoolchildren. Not surprising that cases have plateaued or slightly gone up. I would think a higher proportion of the cases are now asymptomatic ones

Is the correct answer,

Deaths dropping, people in hospital dropping...cases about the same as mention but nearly 600,000 more tests a day this last week or so. Good figures despite the doom sayers.

Everybody should experience Israel’s border force entry and exit at least once in their lives. Those who have been will understand

I've said this before. The number of positive tests is meaningless. Its the percentage of positives that is the true figure. The more tests performed the more cases .

Our current rate is 0.4%. At the peak of this wave on the 1st January it was 12.5%.

Correct. We need to know the percentage of positive test results out of the total number of tests undertaken in order to judge the incidence of virus amongst the population.

I believe the phased relaxing, with time for data to feed through before proceeding to the next step is the correct one. If you just open up everything at once you haven't got a clue which element has caused any upsurge.
