Are they just trying to pad the economic impacts after lifting restrictions or should we expect a rough ride over the summer.

Agree with this, not all businesses will be able to afford or maybe even have the custom to return all staff to their roles, so the three month extension makes sense

Spot on from how I see things, mass redundancies would mean the supply and demand of jobs changes = lower wages and so less tax coming in, less spending, bankruptcies = even less jobs.....

I think it's largely PR, hence the leaks, plus some continuity, to maintain a little stability and reassurance

I think it depends how you see it. As people have said above it will take time for businesses to recover and this gives them, and their staff, a bit of assurance in that time.

If the government is hoping all adults have had their first injection by July, means most of the population will have some protection and furlough runs almost until the programme comes to its cycle. Which will give people a chance to reintroduce themselves to society when they feel comfortable to do so.

I think it’s a positive step for business and the population

Any sensible approach to any kind of financial support needs to avoid a cliff edge.

Businesses impacted by Covid will gradually recover as consumers/customers gradually return. There needs to be a gradual reduction in support running in line with the expected gradual return to normal trading.

The intention is that people come off furlough gradually as businesses get more busy during the lifting of lockdown and they are needed. if you are still furloughed in September your job is probably going to be lost.

I'm not making plans to spend Christmas on Waikiki Beach.

Or to go to the pub, non essential shop, close personal service (haircut), holiday, staycation, anytime soon.

The new normal is gradually becoming the normal normal.

For me, it's a very positive thing that furlough is extended until Sept.

I work in theatrical costume so naturally not a business that just opens its doors again and business comes back straight away. We'll be lucky if we get panto business at Christmas.

We still have a couple of people who chose to stay off when we reopened, absolutely nothing wrong with them. I bet they put the flags out when they heard about this news!
