"Shouldn't these new variants be called covid 21 now ? Well at least covid 19 a,b,c,d,dd " They do have nomenclature for the variants. The two variants from Brazil are B.1.1.7 and P.1. P.1 is the one we're getting concerned about now. The letters and numbers relate to the evolutionary relationship between new variants and previous variants. There's no single internationally accepted system for viral nomenclature. An article recently in "Nature" bemoans this. Search for the title "The world needs a single naming system for coronavirus variants" from 19th Jan 2021.

"The UK has set strict quarantine rules for anyone arriving from a red zone. The issue is no other country has. So any in bound travel to UK could include people who have traveled from red zones..which is what happened in this case and as usual the media are trying to scare everyone about it. The UK can't stop all inbound travel what about deliveries ? truck drivers on ferries have to leave there vehicles during the crossing so another driver recently arrived into Europe from Brazil for example could be mixing with all drivers and spreading this variant....plus they should have passport details etc and I am sure police could trace this person if they wanted to..or can anyone slip away from the police once past border control it appears so." But also all pasengrs on that plane ate not treated as red zone passengers but it can be quite a mix on board the plane

Two options, it's a recent arrival or we have community transmission of this variant. Either isn't good, but the latter scares me more.

Either isn't good, but the latter scares me more." even if a recent arrival they could have just been on a plane with someone who’s journey originated in a country with the brazil strain, they could have filled in all the border paperwork correctly, and done their quarantine - its not a check people at the border or track them from entering the country issue even if they were in hotel quarantine, unless the hotel tests are segregated at a lab, if they had missed this paperwork we still would have had no idea who it belonged to - the only benefit would be we could ring round the hotels and ask “anyone still waiting on a result” as away to eliminate possibilities quicker there are folk on about track them from their credit card, or the flight manifest - what credit card and what flight manifest all we have is a positive swab

" they know who crossed the border , they don’t know if the owner of an unidentifiable test is one of those people because tests are not connected to passports " letting folks cross the border without taking an identifiable test in relation to each border crosser is not controlling your borders. the government have failed to implement an effective border control system. it's that simple.

"what would you have done with that data though? just stored it for the year on the off chance that we might get a positive test one day that someone didn’t fill in? it would have been a phenomenal amount of extra cost and admin to connect unused tests to people then follow up what went wrong if they dont later flag as used For a disease that is causing such massive disruption/ loss of life... yeah. Database. This is going to Swing at 123 Example Street, enter designated number for Swing, scan barcode on test. Store data in accordance with other health information. Accessible only under circumstances such as these." swing you have repeatedly agreed that its a risk vs reward approach that we require and thats what you will be doing yourself when lockdown ends the risk if this happening was low - yes its happened because the risk wasn’t zero , but the risk that existed wasn’t high enough to warrant the additional expense, time, admin, complications to the testing system at the volume of tests we are completing- the aim was to get tests out to people as quickly as possible and track them on the way back in when they actually mean something - an unused test kit being posted out is just that - an unused test kit

"why do you think they are testing kids n parents twice a week from 8th march lol .....to get the numbers back up Remember they said schools are safe...use your critical thinking if schools are safe and not vectors of the virus then why test twice a week. Goal posts keep moving and you lot fall for it... previous goal post was to vaccinate the vulnerable so we can get back to normality We test to try to prevent further outbreaks, because this can harm all ages. Agenda: won't someone think of the children. Appalling, huh? "We are going to get different variants all the time just like the flu so more people get vaccinated the better " The problem is we need to get the whole world vaccinated and keep the vaccinations up to date or unvaccinated populations will become reservoirs for disease and mutations to Covid.

"we don’t even know this person left the country!!!! exactly. if they knew wether or not they left the country then that would indicate that they have control of the border. but, they don't know and that's not controlling your borders." no its because the test in the lab potentially had nothing at all to do with the border whatsoever why are the border control responsible now for a hone covid test for someone that has potentially never left the country????

" why are the border control responsible now for a hone covid test for someone that has potentially never left the country???? potentailly? why are the border control unsure if the person has entered the country or not if they are in control of it?" because you only know if someone crossed the border if you have their identity - at the moment an unidentified test nothing to do with the border belongs to person X - how do border control check if they had a person X cross the border the have an entire list of who crossed the border but the lab cant provide them with a name to cross check against it

"the have an entire list of who crossed the border but the lab cant provide them with a name to cross check against it " because they have no control. "we'll let you in but please tell us, scouts honour, you do promise you will get a test done don't you". that's not controlling your borders, instead that is government ineptitude. nevermind, in 4 months time government lickspittles will change tack and just brush it off as hindsight.

" So given that's illegal to give false information or refuse to give information, how do you suggest the border control carry out their role? I'm interested to hear how you'd make sure it is done more efficiently?

If people provide the legally required information it works. The person being sought wasn't required to hotel quarantine, they had to home quarantine and took a test which they failed to correctly supply contact details. That's not the border contols fault. There you go, now you've shouted about the border control system not working, so it's your turn to explain to us all how you'd make it work better? I'm not holding my breath though.
