So apparently unpaid carers are eligible for the vaccine as part of the latest priority group along with 16-65 year olds with health conditions. Would’ve been nice if this had been made clearer, I had no clue until I read up on it

"Could anyone with an elderly parent say they are an unpaid carer ? "

Not sure if you have to be claiming carers allowance or not but you do have to register with your GP as an unpaid carer so maybe give them a call and see what they say

I asked at the start of the vaccination program and was told I needed to be claiming carers allowance. I don't so I didn't ask again. It might not be the case now

I'm an unpaid carer for two and claim carers allowance for one. I registered with my doctor and didn't have to show any proof. Had my jab last week.

To be honest the guidance is almost hidden regarding this and you wouldn’t know if you didn’t research it yourself! It also doesn’t specifically mention having to claim CA so suppose that could be taken either way. Our GP didn’t ask, just wanted to know who I was caring for

Yes I think that has changed now, to include carers that don't claim CA. Carers UK, were pushing to get carers jabbed when they took the people, they care for, for their jab

Bit naughty really isn’t it! Not saying it’s a “conspiracy” not to get these people vaccinated but surely it would make sense to be a bit more transparent about it? Suppose though with the speed in which this has had to be rolled out it was inevitable some people would fall through the cracks

From the limited experience I have of the program its highly efficient and working well considering the speed with which its been set up. My parents bypassed the lengthy queue because of their age and one's in a wheelchair. They were in and out in minutes. Their paid carers seem to have all been vaccinated too

It wasn't very clear. The thing is, if I became ill, I would have to get carers in, for at least one of my family members, putting more strain on the care system, I'm sure many others are in my position.

The system in the vaccination centre itself was superb. Minnie was in and out within 15 minutes and they were more than happy for me to be there with her (although not in the room to get the jab obviously). They were all very helpful and accommodating and it’s a credit to the NHS for how organised they are

If you go on the NHS booking page and put your nhs number or other details and answer questions it tells you if you are able to book yet or not. I do this most days as I know my surgery and post service isn't that great.

It does now ask about unpaid caring. I care for my elderly and disabled parents a lot but I've never told the council or anyone as they are my parents I feel it's my duty. Therefore its not "official" that I do so I have no proof so I can't get the vaccine for this reason.

Hopefully be my turn soon though.

If only I lived across the boarder in Wales. They are doing amazing with their vaccines and are on many under 50s already!

Hello. Can I suggest you have a look on Carers UK site. From 15th February, people who are the main carer for elderly or disabled, regardless if you receive carers allowance, are in cohort 6 for the vaccination. Contact your GP, you don't need proof and they will update your notes and arrange your appointment soon.

It won't be long because we are all so doing amazingly well with our vaccine they have started this current group 2 weeks ahead of schedule.

This group will take a while because it is the biggest group by far and contains around 9 million people.

It was announced yesterday in some newspapers that if the roll out goes the way has all over fifties could be offered the 1st vaccine by the end of March and this is amazing.

Just tried that and unfortunately it says it’s only for over 65’s, eligible frontline health worker or eligible frontline social care workers, which I am none of

I’ll just wait with crossed fingers for my GP to contact me

Did you try putting in your details because they haven't updated the information on me link but I know people that have used it that are in group.

Its the biggest group by far and they only started it on Monday.

Yeah, put in my NHS number but it says because I’m not a frontline worker and I’d need to provide proof when attending I can’t book through that system yet.

Worst case scenario I’ll have to wait until they’ve gone through this priority group and they ask those who’ve been missed to contact them. Looks like it may only a be a few weeks so I can wait that long

Yes You have to be a registered carer to somebody that is in the top 9 priority categories although to be honest they almost certainly will be if they need a carer.

ive had a little insight to this via a drs surgery the problem some are getting is proof it seems some will use it to jump the queue ... one older gentleman had 7 unpaid carers trying to bag a jab no shame in some as when the elderly gentleman was contacted he had no unpaid carers and was enlisted with our home care section...

Thats terrible! According to the government guidelines you have to be a registered carer with a GP.

The person you are has to eligible for a carer.

My sister was a registered carer for our dad, she was contacted by her surgery this week inviting her for vaccine as a registered carer.

You would think fine fair enough, but he died in 2016!

She is having the jab next week but thats because she in group 6 for a health condition.

It's our Son. He's 100% physically dependent on me in all aspects of life and is non-verbal and non-communicative, but I imagine it's because he doesn't have any conditions that render him as "clinically vulnerable".

It's purely that he would definitely be at risk if we were both too unwell to look after him.

I'm sure I'll hear from them soon enough, and the GP have confirmed that I am definitely registered as a Carer.

Oh That's such a tricky one isn't it. There are lots of are people that are vulnerable but not clinically although thankfully some of those have now been added to the list including people with learning difficulties, Registered unpaid carers and people with severe mental health illness.

I'm sure you will be contacted within a couple of weeks.

I just had an idea actually and I know this is worked for other people who have posted on the forums before.

I would contact your GP or local vaccine hub and ask if you can be put on the "no show" list and get a last minute appointment if there are leftovers.

So it appears you can now book your vaccine appt online workout waiting to be contacted (as long as you fall in to this current category). Weirdly it was trying to send me 10 miles away even though there are centres round the corner so I had to contact my GP.

All sorted though for tomorrow afternoon

Yup had mine this morning - the person you care for has the recognised as disabled through your GP and you medical records need to be tagged as such. PIP/DLA needs to be received by the person you’re caring for.
