Gyms are probably one of the most dangerous places to visit I would think. Sweaty bodies giving of airborne particles and circuits relying on shared machines and equipment. Trouble with a capital T.

Much as I would like to, I agree, I think gyms sound relatively risky.

I'm sure 99% of gyms will have staff disinfecting handles, bars, mats etc very well.

But stuff like weight disks that people handle all the time, no way they will get sanitised sufficiently.

I've tried to run outdoors and maintained it since Christmas but I've had so many injuries due wet leaves, ice, mud etc... and I've had abuse from people who don't want me 'heavy breathing' as I run past them on paths, so now I wear a snood which isn't great for running.

I just need to get back in the gym so I can train safely and not get abuse!

Not that you have any evidence of a risk, outside of your imagination.

And yet there is enormous evidence of the physical and psychological benefits of exercise. I wonder which we should rely on?

Wow, that’s dreadful, I am a runner & have run much further than pre lockdown, I have occasionally had people sort of jumping out of the way, Patric in first lockdown, turning face away from me, but no abuse. I do tend to run early morning ( summer I was out by 7 back by 9) winter runs as soon as it is light if not at work & as soon as home when working, but choosing routes off the beaten track to avoid busy parks.

I've just heard very concerning news today that my local fitness centre may not open back up. The owner is really struggling with the extortionate rent and the landlord is being a total prick about it. Very short sighted of the landlord.

I've had abuse a few times now. Once I was running past someone's driveway as a man was closing his gates behind his car. I was obliviously running in my own world and all of a sudden he starts waving me away in a 'shoo' motion and said 'stop coughing and spluttering by my driveway'!!!! I was instantly brought back to reality and did a little scared dance in the air before carrying on my run. I wasn't sure if I was more stunned at being shooed or told I was spluttering! hahaha I'm quite fit and you can barely hear me breath when I run, never mind cough or splutter!!! hahaha

Another time, this brat was on his scooter way ahead of me while his mum was face down into her phone. Anyway, in between me passing her and reaching her brat, she took her face out of her phone and ordered me to run around her child! What did she think I was going to do, run into and over him, stamping on his scooter as I went? I just carried on running and ignored her shouting and resisted the urge to kick her little darling off the scooter as I circled past! lol

People have taken a wide berth from me (usually in my wheelchair), including unnecessarily dramatic stepping off from pavements (clearly harder for me to just "jump" into the road, but I've not had anything said. The only unsolicited comment I've had actually was from a young man in school uniform, smoking a cigarette, back in November time. As I whizzed past him, he shouted "bloody hell love, you should be in the Paralympics"

Gyms are the worst place to get infected everyone breathing in other people's air panting then touching things that others have touched with sweaty hands and pub would be the same in a enclosed environment breathing in air and drinking from glasses that most likely haven't been cleaned properly it's common sense

Question of priorities. The education of a nation's children is one of the most important things, even in a crisis. So we find a way to make it work.

Gyms are important to many people (myself included) but they're an optional activity.

What you think worse then the kids running roung a school or walking up and down a coridore.

30 odd to a small room then all move round so a different 30 then in another room changing what 5 times a day all in a lunch hall at some point and walking to school in groups.

I get kids need education but it can't be clean. At least wate till R is down to 0.5 ish

But we will see how long befor a school shuts and when it dose will it be the hole school in isolation and the families Mmmm dought at least with a gym every one there should isolate if there is a possative case

That’s where you are wrong about schools, ours anyway and I’m sure many more. They wear masks until seated at their desk, they don’t touch any doors as all propped open. They have a set order to enter / leave the classroom. They don’t move around during the day only the teachers do. The only time they move is for lunch or break time which is in their year groups, which is preceded and followed by hand washing and hand sanitizer. They have staggered end / start times and each year has a separate entrance to access / leave the school. Our school had four cases the whole of the autumn term, one student in early October who caught it from his father, and three teachers in late November. There was no other cases or spreading to other individuals. So not all of them are the germ spreading establishments you think they are.

At our school the children eat lunch in the classroom that they have had their last lesson in. Very little movement around the building.

Well for a start our years aren’t 300 kids they are a 100. They have 20 minute slot to eat lunch and leave and there is a clean up team who clean the tables / benches in the 5 minute gap. All year lunches are staggered depending on what time you start school, just like break time.

There was no other cases or spreading to other individuals. So not all of them are the germ spreading establishments you think they are.

The school I went to had and hass to gets one for cars one for students. I guess schooling has changed but how do you get 300 kids in to a dining hall at lunch time and keep them 2m apart that's 1200 square meters for 45 minits then clean it for the next lot 5 years so 5 hours to do lunch

Well for a start our years aren’t 300 kids they are a 100. They have 20 minute slot to eat lunch and leave and there is a clean up team who clean the tables / benches in the 5 minute gap. All year lunches are staggered depending on what time you start school, just like break time. "

So Is that year 1 to 7

"Gyms are the equivalent of a cruise ship without the sea. Filthy places where the virus can settle in for a duration l

The papers have suggested May. Nothing confirmed but they seem to have been pretty accurate in what they've reported previously.

School opens for the first year at 08.00 and the final year leaves at 17.00.

Because I'm in near constant pain without it. The gym has probably been the indoor public place I have felt safest since the pandemic. Far more so than the shops and the singular times I braved a restaurant and a bar.

We have a full curriculum. The things that have changed are practical suspended for DT, cooking. They used to move rooms for these and art, these are now written lessons only. Art is done in classroom now limited to drawing / painting in class with own supplies. The only lessons they leave their room for is science & music. These have been grouped to the end of the day for each year on separate days, ie instead of science three times a week as before, they have three straight lessons but no experiments are done by the students, just observing what the teacher does. Music they still compose their own music but on keyboards only. These classrooms are then deep cleaned at the end of the day before the next year arrives the following afternoon. It’s meant a lot of work to change the timetable around but the school has managed it and it’s working.

It is probably a better way of teaching in a small school but is 300 per year not more the norm

Those 300 kids in that year, using your example, won’t be having music all at the same time, that’s why a lot of thought goes into the timetables.

Having googled the average size of a secondary and then divide that by 5 to get each year is just short of 200 kids per year.

‘Official data from the Department for Education (DfE) shows that secondary school rolls increased by 81,000 pupils at the start of the academic year, pushing the average class size to 22 and the average size of a secondary school up 2% to 986 pupils’

Just for context, my son's secondary school (same one we attended) is almost 2000 students, including sixth form. The sizes of schools vary hugely, hence the differences in how schools have to manage things.

Precisely it’s no one solution fits all, each school needs to do what is best for their building & pupils.

"Never needed a gym before lockdown, don’t need one after lockdown. By the time I travel to and from a gym I could have done a full workout!"

So is this the same as me saying, ive never needed a hospital in the last 20 years, everything I needed I got at the doctors, don't worry about hospitals, don't need them.

"Just for context, my son's secondary school (same one we attended) is almost 2000 students, including sixth form. The sizes of schools vary hugely, hence the differences in how schools have to manage things.

Precisely it’s no one solution fits all, each school needs to do what is best for their building & pupils.

I guess time will now show us. I get kids do not get as sick but i belive they can catch it and there for transmit covid."

How prevalent they are at having it will be seen with twice weekly testing

No, its not the same at all, there are lots of ways you can exercise without going to a gym but not so much you can do at home that you need hospitals for

There's lots of people who cannot easily exercise at home/by going out running or walking. Some of us need the help of machines, big puddles of water (swimming pools) or indoor venues. I wouldn't expect most able bodied people to understand, however and await being told everyone can run a bit, try Couch to 5k etc

Pools I grant you, not a home workout, but as far as resistance there is nothing you could do at the gym that you couldn’t do at home...I am making the assumption that you are not Olympic lifting here...apologies if you are! Cardio a little more difficult but not impossible depending on mobility. Not judging, each to their own & I am fully aware of the social aspect of gym use.

"Gyms are probably one of the most dangerous places to visit I would think. Sweaty bodies giving of airborne particles and circuits relying on shared machines and equipment. Trouble with a capital T. "
Covid isn't an air born virus, you have to be within 2metres of someone for at least 10/15 minutes to catch it. And government research has showen that gyms were one of the least places you were likely to catch it. Below pubs, supermarkets, schools etc...

I'm lifting quite a bit but from a reclined angle. I can only exercise seated or from my wheelchair. I've tried resistance bands but even if I tie all the colours together, it feels like I'm doing fuck all.

I'm a wheelchair user

I've really struggled to work out at home and want to go back to the gym... But I don't think I'll be going back soon. I'm mostly able bodied and I'll just put it on the back burner until I feel safer.

I guessed that, the biggest issue I have encountered with bands & wheelchairs is anchorage... both bands & chairs, sometimes with amusing consequences...

Maybe for you, but I haven't got the space or the money to replicate my gym workouts at home or anywhere else.

Yup. Even with my brakes on, my chair scoots forward if I anchor on a door and I've broken a fence on a tennis court trying to use them outdoors. I CBA trying anything else with them to be honest. I'm too strong for my own good hence why there's no hill I cannot surmount....

Just heard that I think my local fitness centre won't be opening back up. Absolutely gutted. The lady owner has worked her arse off trying to keep it going, alongside her full time job. I really feel for her.

All this hardship on so many people, its so difficult to comprehend somehow.

Exactly

They should of been allowed to stay open. It's for the benefit of people's mental and physical health.

I clean more at the gym when it was open than at home it felt. Equipment spaced out regular cleaning by staff and from what I could see members were very good at sanitising too. I for one are glad they are reopening in April
