Pfizer vaccine results incredible

Israel has published figures suggesting that of 700,000 people (mostly over 60) who received 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, only 300 caught covid and only 16 of those were hospitalised. Once the vulnerable have been vaccinated, the crisis is over since the risk to the rest of us is negligible.

This is fantastic news but presents a couple of problems for Boris. If the figures are significantly worse in the UK due to a single dose, there will be questions asked. Secondly Astra Zenica will struggle to come close to those numbers and the people who received it will want to know why they received a less efficacious vaccine.

Could you post your source? There have been very different information coming out of Israel. Only last week they said that their results showed the vaccine was not as effective as the manufacturer stated.

300 catching it after vaccination is quite worrying. That got to be the highest figures so far.

I do feel you've an agenda on this. You do know that Germany and Denmark have said they are considering a wider gape between vaccines too so as to get as many initially partly protected. Others are looking to see how it works.

The supply of the vaccine is going to create a lot of issues and countries are having to look into ways of managing this potential crisis.

Life will certainly improve vastly once we've had the vaccine.

If we're all asymptomatic afterwards though don't expect a full return to normality until the whole world is vaccinated.

How can you say the results are incredible when 300 out of 700,000 caught it after two vaccinations ?

With the exception of those in East Jerusalem, no-one in the Palestinian areas has started receiving Covid vaccines.

There's another group in Israel that have shown a very different level of protection after getting the vaccination. They quote that it's to do with social and economic difference. I find this very interesting as this shows the level of protection isn't a blanket accepted % of protection for everyone.

My point is we need to get a bigger picture of results before assumptions are made.

Last week, 1 scientist claimed lower efficacy and this was quickly denied by the Israel health authority and actually it appears that his quotes were taken out of context. The latest results published this week are quite stunning and a real reason for hope

"How can you say the results are incredible when 300 out of 700,000 caught it after two vaccinations ?"

That equates to 0.04%. When you consider that only 16 needed hospitalisation, which is 0.002%, the crisis is over in Israel.

Yeah a friend of mine got it after they had had the vaccine. It the symptoms were so mild it wasn’t an issue. Post vaccine, covid, will be the new cold.

If we are asymptomatic then there is no longer a problem. How many people have flu but don't show any symptoms? The answer is we don't know because we don't test people for flu, because it doesn't matter. Like the common cold, it doesn't matter if you catch it if it does you no harm.

I wouldn't be too hopeful of uk travellers being ss readily admitted into many countries, as was the norm before the virus, sadly

probably because its only 0.04%

which means the vaccine was 99.96% effective ... funny how showing the same data in different ways can reassure or panic people

I think the first world countries will quickly sort things out, the problem will be the third world countries with poor access to vaccines who will find themselves banned from visiting first World countries. Also people visiting un-vaccinated countries might find they have to isolate on return.

i guess their point is it wont do you harm but there will still be restrictions til everyone has been vaccinated because you still have the potential to do others harm ... once we have equal protection your point stands

This isn't the same metric as the 95% efficacy figures because they are not comparing the infection rate between vaccinated and unvaccinated people. They are just saying how many vaccinated people caught the virus in the few weeks since they received the second dose.

There will be many countries who will not be able to afford to purchase let alone run a country wide vaccine program. It's ok for well off countries to do it but it's still costing billions upon billions to purchase and vaccinate.

They haven't vaccinated anyone on the west bank so will be interested in comparative results from those in real social and economic depravity. Guaranteed the effectiveness will be much less. Point is don't just take one study.

The narrative wouldn't be so good if they didn't bump it up.

Or to put it another way with a 95% ish effective rate from the trials the expected number of people who might contract Covid would be around 35,000

seeing as 34200 died of the flu year ending 2019 I don't think you can say it doesn't matter If you catch it. And that's with a vaccine

im not saying its the same metric, I’m just saying use a number like 300 got the virus and that sounds like a large number and sends a message it doesn’t work

using the same data to say that 99.96% of the same sample did not get the virus sends a very different message

We don't do anything to prevent people catching flu other than vaccinate, so why would it be different for covid if it ends up being no more dangerous?

It won't matter when the whole world is vaccinated, until that point a vaccinated person can infect a non vaccinated.

Which country, with poor vaccination levels, are going to invite mass tourism from a country or region of asymptomatic virus carries, who won't suffer themselves?

On a national level things will move quicker towards normality as the vaccination levels increase, we can't expect to be jetting off around the world on holiday until those countries are also vaccinated without creating problems, can we?

The people who refuse vaccines are going to be at an ever increasing risk of infection if every vaccinated person around them happens to be asymptomatic.

The joy of statistics. Yes at face value that does look like great news but what were the applied variables?

Does Israel have a lockdown or other restrictive measures in place?

My point is that the only true indicator is when those vaccinated are behaving as normal (meeting family, friends, hugging, working, travelling on public transport, not wearing masks etc etc) and seeing what the infection rate is then.
