I thought I was reasonably safe and get through the whole show, but today it happened, I'm furloughed. Feels like a kick in the teeth.

I've been placed on Flexible Furlough this week with my hours being reduced right down. I'm thankful that I still have a job and I can still do some work, but it is a bit of a strange feeling.

Agree completely.

It can be frustrating not being able to do the things you want to tho with less money coming in, that's my biggest growl. I have the time but not the finances

I'm trying to do things that are free. Recycling things I can find around the house.

Mostly tho I'm walking into the spare room, looking at it, sighing and walking back out!

I've loads of ideas mind.

I’ve been made redundant twice in the past year first time from a role I

Had been in for years and last week because the role I had been appointed for was pulled after 2 months.

I’d quite happily take furlough instead

I am too, I’m very mixed emotions, thankfully on full pay as of Monday just gone.

Fantastic I’m home, not working all the hours god sends, saving fuel etc. But I fear massively for my mental health and isolation.

I’ve worked throughout covering shifts left right and centre but due to a condition I’ve been told not work

Yeah thats a right kick in the teeth, getting paid to sit at home doing nothing and getting paid for the privilege too . Thousands of self employed fell through the gaps and have had no furlough money or earnings for a long time. Not to mention those risks their own lives every day saving lives or delivering food , those people don't get the furlough option.

It does my tips in those people that complain about being on furlough or the ' i might get bored or isolated ' pish. Be thankful and stop whining about a very fortunate position to be in .

I work in a hospital. We currently have 15% staff sickness. It's rough. I'm tired. But this is a load of bullshit. Being isolated is hard. At times I've been grateful to still be working for the social contact. Plus some people can't afford to take a 20% paycut. Have some compassion and stop using my profession as a stick to beat people with.

I can bet many of those people on sick leave would now love a bit of furlough time as opposed being ground down by work . Not sure if its ssp money when off sick or you get full pay , but if it is ssp a im also sure they would rather have 80% wages than ssp.

This is where the problem lies a lot of the time, people think furlough is a load of free time and free money for doing nothing, but you take 20% pay cut but bills stay at 100% and probably increase due to the extra time being spent at home with electricity and gas. The extra time would be great for people if they could do things with that time, but a lot of the free time is spent alone in the house, due to other family members still working or living alone, and work was a main social contact place for a lot of people. I feel really sorry for anyone who’s lost their job, I survived a huge scale redundancy process at my work but 650 other staff didn’t, so believe me I know the worries when it comes to job loss, but everyone has a different story and different issues, it doesn’t make their problems any less important.

Personally, I struggle to have any sympathy for people who moan about being furloughed.

To be furlough instead of redundant at the moment puts you in a very fortunate position.

Why can't people see that being furloughed is actually a positive?

I found my 5 month furlough ok in first lockdown and the 80% was ok as less tax so not quite a loss of 20% admittedly weather was nicer for garden and excersize bycicle rides and walks! But just made most of it ! My new job is a third less wages not so good but was lucky to get another I suppose! X

I work in an essential shop. We still have people on furlough for a number of reasons. Since Boris' last announcement 3 more decided they were going back on furlough. I'm afraid those people haven't done themselves any favours, and the rest of us feel quite bitter about them. I know that sounds awful, but there's nothing wrong medically with them. Meanwhile everyone else is knackered and worried about every shift!

I agree with lots of what you say here , though I dont feel bitter about people on furlough. Its mostly not their fault they have been furloughed. My only gripe is the complaining about it , as said earlier they should count themselves lucky.

To the other point mentioned, there only social interaction was work there's absolutely no reason why they can't go for a walk or interact on line, god knows there's enough offers from various agencies and other media outlets with offers of support and just a chat. Especially someone from fab complaining, they certainly can't be on a swinger site and then say they can't interact with others.

I'm not bitter about the ones who genuinely can't come in, it's the ones who have chosen to be put back on furlough when they were perfectly ok to work for the 10 or so weeks that they came back for.

I never said that work was MY only social interaction, but I know several people who’s situation that is and that is what I’m referring to about personal situations. I’m very lucky I live near friends and family in an area where I walk out my door onto a countryside trail.

must admit i didn't think furlough was for the employee to choose/opt into - job exists or doesn't.

can see that some 'nice' employers have chosen to furlough employees rather than admit business won't restart and lay them off.

have worked all way through and now been placed on notice with the rest of company for 10% redundancies - lets see what the next 4 weeks bring as i can't see myself getting another job in near future, not as though i can get a job in a bar/restaurant and i suspect very few vacancies in supermarkets

I can't comment on people's expenditure but taking home 80% of your wage is better than being laid off and possibly finding a job with 60 or 70% of your original wage, or claiming benefits which'll be a lot less

Just my view

And yes in the first wave I was furloughed from March till August

This is rediculous. Where did anyone say they didn't care about those who have been made redundant? Also where do youbstop with this kind of thinking? Do we say to those who have lost their jobs that at least they haven't died from Covid? No of course we don't. Someone always has it worse. Why do we always have to play each other off against each other? If you can't feel sorry for yourself because someone else has it worse, there will be precisely one person in the world allowed any sympathy at any given time.

Have you thought about doing some voluntary work? Vaccination centres are desperate for volunteers to help out with lots of different things

I've been working from home for 10 months, the 4 walls are getting on my nerves but I'm lucky I know that. I'm now undertaking training to give covid vaccinations so I'll be doing that on top of my full-time job. This will get me out of the house, give variety to my work and help the effort.

Worth considering to help protect your mental health
