I guess it will be a waiting game to see what impact vaccination has on hospital admissions Even with just a single dose, hopefully a level of protection will be achieved which will reduce hospital admissions to a manageable level, plus by the autumn, the elderly and clinically vulnerable, along with health and care workers should have had their second doses which will hopefully have a big impact on reducing those who would have been most at risk from ending up in hospital from doing so Fingers crossed

"Could it be that the people of NZ and other countries in the far east, actually listened and stayed in during their lockdown. As a courier driver in South Wales i sometimes forget there is a lockdown on the amount of traffic on the roads" Or that NZ is in the rare position of having a sparse population, a favourable climate and being a largely self dependant island? As for Asian countries, I think the average Asian is healthier than the average European.

"We are an Island just like New Zealand, but our Knob jockey government haven't for what ever reason stopped all the in coming flights there fore we won't be rid of this virus, so it will be an on going thing " 9 months on and it’s not sunk in yet! By the time NZ locked down the UK already had 10’s of thousands already infected. I reckon more international travellers pass through Heathrow in a day than pass though all NZ’s international airports in a month. Lockdown is not a means to end a virus, it only puts the breaks on to try restrict the pressure on hospitals.

UK is a massive world travel hub and the virus was already here last January, so even if we'd known more then and closed all boarders in March time when people seep saying it wouldn't have made any difference. Many didn't follow restrictions, people demonstrated about ideologies that they know longer care about and didn't understand then back then either. It just suited an excuse to get out. The virus spread not because of people traveling into the country after March but because they acted irresponsibly after March.

"We are an Island just like New Zealand, but our Knob jockey government haven't for what ever reason stopped all the in coming flights there fore we won't be rid of this virus, so it will be an on going thing " Your Geography is not Brilliant. New Zealand is two islands in the middle of nowhere. Its over 2,500 miles from Australia, its nearest neighbour. New Zealand is a similar size as the UK and only has just over 4 million population. There is more than double that in just the South East of England. These are the main reasons New Zealand has been covid free.

"Ffs Just open everything up.. People should be allowed to decide for themselves.. Half arsed "lockdowns" don't work.. 10 months wasted on an inabilty to make a decision... A bloody farce " I have to agree with some of the earlier comments re the failure of our government to restrict incomers much earlier. I was in Bourton on the water 29/2 this year and it was overrun with Chinese tourists which unusually were not wearing any form of face covering. I must admit I found it odd at the time but didn't think anymore of it as a pandemic here seemed like an impossibility? Shows I should have gone with first instinct?

Pisses me right off. As to your question, lockdown is doing my head in now, but I'd prefer to ease out of it slowly rather than keep bouncing back and forth.

"question : is social distancing.. over such a long period.. the hardest thing you've ever had to do personally? do you think its the hardest thing a/your community has had to do as i goes against all human nature? Do you think it will effect mankind in the long run as wars and revolutions have? Have fear and paranoia ever been as high... some people would prefer to fight in a war or endure invasion than this just night thoughts d" Personally ? No. Being an introvert, it's completely normal to me. This is how I lived my life pretty much before Covid and lockdown came about anyway. Sure, I may have popped out socially a few times a year more pre-covid, and ofc daily for work, but the latter is done from home and the former isn't possible so I don't feel I need to give it any thought. For the wider community and others though ? For sure. Pretty devastating I imagine for so many reasons. Yes, I do expect it to affect the general population as a whole like wars and revolutions have. Anger, fear, doubt, paranoia, depression and a whole raft of long-term socio-economic and mental and physical health issues for some will persist long after Covid has gone. Would I prefer to fight in a war though ? No, certainly not. 1. Fighting an enemy usually involves killing other people just like me, with their own hopes, dreams and beliefs. It means you are being orchestrated by others above you who may not have your best interests at heart. The same goes for the "other side". It's a very thin "wedge" at the top who organise the war. The average person in the street has no need for it, nor desires it. The "wedge" drives the narrative and leverages "the people" if they consent to it. You dot have to consent to war, but that consent may come at a price. Only the individual can decide if they are prepared to pay it. 2. Endure invasion ? For someone to prefer to "endure invasion" rather than "this" means little more than changing your rulers but living under the same conditions, as covid comes with people. In fact you'd be a lot worse off, as invasions bring supply chain issues, food unpredictability issues, military curfews, greater surveillance, and a harsher degree of enslavement. Covid is a medical emergency. We are fighting a virus and not each other. We are fighting a virus as a human race against a common enemy. We lose sight of that fact at our peril.

"We are an Island just like New Zealand, but our Knob jockey government haven't for what ever reason stopped all the in coming flights there fore we won't be rid of this virus, so it will be an on going thing " New Zealand's geography and population makes it impossible to compare with the UK, with a population of 5 million in a far larger land mass of 2 Island's. With the UK you have people entering illigaly every day in small boats across a strip of water 20 odd miles wide.

The idea that the country is going to continue this style of life indefinitely should be pushed back on very hard. I have no intention of spending another year in lockdown/restricted living. If that means in 6 months I’m a cob idiot and breaking the law so be it. There has to be a line where the world says let’s live again.

"We are an Island just like New Zealand, but our Knob jockey government haven't for what ever reason stopped all the in coming flights there fore we won't be rid of this virus, so it will be an on going thing " It's pointless making a comparison between New Zealand and the UK. Yes we're both islands, but that's where the similarity ends. You might just as well compare New Zealand with the Galapagos Islands, in comparison NZ has done poorly compared with them.

"so any guesses for the end or suspension of social distancing?. d" I'd guess, if the vaccines work, then it could be the end of summer, if we haven't got on top of it by the end of summer then we could be in for a 2 year pandemic. It's happened in the past, most last 1 year, every so often they go on for 2 years historically.

There also seems to be a mentality, not just on here that if you even mention hoping for normality you are rounded on as selfish and reminded folk are dying blah blah blah. "I cant see how we can be compared to new zealand an island with roughly 5 million people populaton of UK 60 million London alone has 9million. China only owned up to it in January 2020 which proplbly means they knew about it 6 months earlier we where fighting a losing battle from the start no matter which party was in charge. " I mean there is the big wet thing surrounding the uk? That’s similar for one. Juiciness led NZ perfectly and was on the ball from day 1. Johnson ordered the wrong ppe whilst his second in command drove to Scotland. Stop comparing the numbers of populations as an excuse and look at the way they are managed! X o x

"They really need to be lifting restrictions sooner rather than later. If it were to be for the rest of this year then that will scupper the uptake of the vaccine. We were assured the only way back to normality was the vaccine and in particular vaccinating the vulnerable. If we remain in lockdown as we are then where's the incentive for anyone taking the vaccine" That incentive would be that if there aren't enough people taking the vaccine, we'll stay in partial lockdown forever. And when other countries overtake us in their vaccine takeup rate, then we'll all be stuck taking our holidays on this godforsaken cold wet island forever. Skegness in the rain anybody?

They can't expect people to continually sacrifice and get nothing back. We can't even expect to send schools back in march and have everyone else still locked down. We simply cannot have another year of this as the poster I was responding to predicts.

If we remain in lockdown as we are then where's the incentive for anyone taking the vaccine That incentive would be that if there aren't enough people taking the vaccine, we'll stay in partial lockdown forever. And when other countries overtake us in their vaccine takeup rate, then we'll all be stuck taking our holidays on this godforsaken cold wet island forever. Skegness in the rain anybody? As I'm saying, if the government don't move to ease restrictions this year as the poster above predicted then that incentive is gone. No holiday without vaccine, no holiday with vaccine. They can't expect people to continually sacrifice and get nothing back. We can't even expect to send schools back in march and have everyone else still locked down. We simply cannot have another year of this as the poster I was responding to predicts. Goodness, do we really need a participation trophy? How about doing our bit to end the pandemic? You're totally missing my point. Have a nice evening. ok. The pandemic doesn't give a damn about your feelings I'm afraid" As I said,.you've missed my point.

What, that you want lockdown lifted now despite the developing situation with variants? That's not a point.

Oh sorry, you mean you want something like a trip to Spain or whatever. I guess people have different priorities

I'm not naive enough to think however that folk will be willing to go along with everything they are told to do if they are seeing no sign of anything improving.

I hope it's a moot point as I expect things to improve this year, but if the situation did worsen then I would hope that as more people die, and more people are affected by these deaths, the necessity to do something about it would be more compelling. As I said, hopefully a moot point.

"i truly belive people under estimate the psychological effect this will have if there is no end to social distancing by end of the year.. i think people would actually be more psychologically prepared for world war 3. But then social distancing comes in waves.. do we all see the differences between social distancing enough to be able to hug your mum.. schools go back full capacity fuck someone out of your bubble, a small club reopening and full stadiums or festivals.. what and when is the order..? d" I know full well the effect of lockdowns and distancing. I don't want it, but I think it's better than letting the disease rampage. And I probably won't be able to hug my mum again until this is under control globally *shrug*

"I've hugged my mum she is suffering acute anxiety, loneliness dementia and probably depression has said she'd rather die than continue.. i took a risk and have hugged her and bent the rules slightly so my kids could see her.. i believe if i hadn't... she'd be dead already im feel d " My mum is in Australia and if I go back I lose my residency here (because Australia won't let me back out again). I'm hoping to see her again in the next few years. Maybe. Need both Australia and the UK to be safe plus anywhere the plane refuels.

"Why is it that folk who want lockdown and restrictions to go on as long as possible think they are so right and anyone with a differing opinion is stupid?" Funny thing is that I really want lockdown to end and restrictions to be lifted as soon as they can, and earlier if possible. My father is 89 years old, healthy enough that he could live to be 100, but frail enough that a dose of covid will kill him stone dead. He lives 300 miles away from me and it's now over a year since I've been able to go visit him. Yes of course I could break the travel restrictions, drive for 7 hours to look at him through the window, then drive another 7 hours back home. I could mask up and go inside. And then if he caught covid and died I would never know if it was my selfish desire to visit that had killed him. So I am furious that the government has systematically made the epidemic worse in this country with every single decision that have made, or more often have failed to make until the majority of the public forced them into doing something, anything. I am furious with the selfish people that keep saying it's not real, or that vaccines don't work, or that they are young and it won't affect them. I am burning with fury at the people who keep making light of the fact that 114,851 people have died - oh it's okay they only died "with covid" not "of covid". I am burning with fury that nobody even knows how many people have had their lives totally destroyed by suffering crippling illness, or losing their loved ones, or having their business destroyed, or all of these, because of the failure to take the necessary steps to allow us to safely restart our lives. I am incandescent with rage that the combination of incompetence, selfishness, negligence and downright stupidity evinced by the majority of the government and a substantial minority of people in this country means that with every day that goes past, the chances of my ever seeing my father alive again are going down. So yeah, obviously I must want restrictions and lockdowns to continue for ever just for the hell of it. I must get some kind of sick joy out of seeing businesses going bankrupt and people being out of work. I must want to be prevented from seeing my father, I must want him to die alone, years before he needs to. Or possibly, just possibly, I am quite justified in saying that the people who make stupid decisions and do stupid things and believe stupid fairy tales from the internet, that a blind man could see are absolutely obviously going to extend the duration of the crisis, are in fact stupid?

"i know i was risking it visiting my mum but the more she begs me to bring the kids over the more i know her quality of life is shit living alone after having lost her sister to dementia too.. if there is no quality of life.. ill risk it again.. soon.. my sister visits nearly everyday and has carers but she is dying inside every day.. there has to be quality of life too as well as life " I wasn't judging you. I'm just saying, I can't hug my mum until the world is healed.

"2022 i hope at very least " I'm hoping for 2021/2 for UK. 2023 at earliest for it to be safe enough to visit my family or vice versa (my family are in Australia).

"yes that's what i was replying to. why so long to see your mum. why not next year.. if you can quarantine etc? " At the moment Australia has its borders closed. I can go back, I'm a citizen it's my right, but they won't let me back out again. That needs to be over before we can see each other again. Likely I'll need Australia to regard the UK as safe, the UK to regard Australia as safe, and both the UK and Australia to regard any plane refuel points as safe. So I think 2022 is unrealistic.
