"My mum watched this, it upset her. The debate needs to be had because like it or not decisions are made daily on how valuable a life is. Certain drugs and treatments aren't available because they're too expensive, a time will come if it hasn't already, when some poor doctor is going to have to decide which patient to give an icu bed to according to their chance of survival. There are a lot of people currently who would happily sacrifice the old and vulnerable as if their contribution to society counts for nothing. I reminded my mum yesterday that during times of war people will happily sacrifice the young and fit, it's not personal. Society is so easily lead but if it came down to individuals having to make the choice I doubt many would set their granny afloat on an ice floe " i agree, even think about a life of death situation and how many of you would save your children before yourself? its not a nice thought but the reality is not all life is equal , partly due to evolution , and partly even down to humanity , it would be great if where we each sat in the scale never had to be determined but unfortunately situations like 2 patients one icu bed make it on occasion unavoidable

"I've not seen the video so can only go by the online article but it think it does demonstrate there is a very important issue that needs to be discussed even if it isn't remotely palatable. I agree with his first quote that the lives of his children and grandchildren are worth more than his own for the reason he gives but I think he could have worded it better. The NHS makes decisions every day based on that guys "reasoning" It's just how he phrased it that people have latched on to. " I think you have a good point. The problem is like you say is his wording, I've heard plenty Of interviews with this man and he does speak with very clumsy and sometimes I feel inappropriate language. The thing is if you are going to talk about something so sensitive you have to choose your words carefully because otherwise like you said people will just latch on to certain words and won't be able to get past that.

"Reading the article, he doesnt say her life isn't valuable, just LESS valuable....I can only assume because of her condition. This is a very simplistic stand, and (to me at least) indicative of a attitude where life is a commodity. I wonder what his viewpoint would be if one of his grandchildren had an incurable disease (god forbid that would ever happen). Would he then be saying THEIR life was less valuable?" and there in lies the problem people have with what he said - they attached emotion to what are (unpalatable) facts , asking him to consider it with personal emotion is asking him to put bias into the data
