Vaccines thrown away?!

Not a few but loads of them!

Apparently GPs have to throw them away rather than give them as a 2nd dose.

Anyone else seen this?

The 2nd shot you get is not the exact same as the first so if it was a first one you cannot give it as a second dose anyhow.

And those that don't show should go to the end of the list. It's completely irresponsible to just not show up when others are wanting and needing the vaccine.

As the 2nd does is only 5%more immunity than 1st dose.. it makes sense to vaccinate the majority with the 1st rather than limit stocks.

I have a younger friend in the medical field. She was asked at very short notice if she wanted a jab, as one of the older staff chose not to take it. She was told 3 hrs in advance and got the last jab. If not it would have been thrown in the bin..

My work colleague has volunteered to help with the clinics re organisation. He was given his first shot as there were spare doses due to people not turning up. The need to use within 6 hours will be for the Pfizer vaccine- I dont believe this is the case for the Oxford/AZ one.

Couldn't this be dangerous if it's been out of the freezer for over, 6 hours if it's the Pfizer one? It's irresponsible and certainly unethical at the least

Reading the post the rules she suggests they are disregarding is the age rules so offering it younger people who are there /can come in.

Clinical staff/volunteer vaccinators won't give the Pfizer vaccine if its use doesn't meet the guidelines about storage etc and St Johns applicants to volunteer are told they will be offered it once they start..

It is the same vaccine for both doses the only thing is you have to have the same vaccine. If you had Pfizer as your first you cant have the oxford one as your second.

We had 15 left over after a residential home yesterday and called people who were eligible to come to us to use it up (some of these were second vaccines) our lead GP said she'd rather give second vaccines than bin it.

My surgery uses Facebook and and next door and and if they posted on either of those for people to phone in at short notice to book an appointment, I'm sure they would have plenty of people contact them and not waste any vaccinations.

Maybe it's difficult for places to organise that at the last minute.

Anyone not showing up once they have booked an appointment should be charged a 'no show' fee. This should apply to any medical appointments!

My wife works in a GP surgery and the amount of people who don't show up is staggering. This wastes so much time and money.

Here, we already have the AZ as well as the Pfizer, so we can hold our own clinics, much like the flu rollout, will be much easier than our PCN clinic yesterday, probably have a lot of staff sleeping for the day!

No worries, it just acts as a booster, much like the hepatitis shots, so protection happens within 12-21 days of your first.

We literally had people in tears at the clinic yesterday, it is the most rewarding programme we have ever been privileged enough to help deliver, very grateful to the army of volunteers who helped and were vaccinated

If there is truth in the story, then it depends on what scale.. it’s was always going be a logistical nightmare but we had months to get a universal plan together so it goes as smooth as poss... there is always going be mistakes cuz the ole situation is new and learning from it all the time.. I only hope that when mistakes are made then learn from them and put right ... I do feel for the people trying to organise the vaccine program and distribute it

We have had very little info about that one, since the MHRA approval, unless I have missed something, which the information overload means I may have!! PM Facebook group informs me I haven't, it is the delivery of the vaccines that is our biggest headache, only updated on a weekly basis, whichever we have to plan and contact people at short notice. The over 80s were easy as they stay at home, may get more difficult as we go down the groups

I see there's the usual tiny mind, tiny thoughts response from some about no shows.

I work in the funeral industry. Our branches are closed to the public except in exceptional circumstances.

Does that stop people constantly wanting to come in? Nope. What would you like me to say to the person who turns up in tears on the doorstep telling me their mum has died, 15 minutes before I'm supposed to get my vaccination?

There are a huge amount of very genuine reasons people don't turn up for appointments, that was mine.

No worries, possibly supply may be the issue, we had the Pfizer for this weekend but no idea when we get the next, which really isn't helpful for the second dose!

"I see there's the usual tiny mind, tiny thoughts response from some about no shows.

There are a huge amount of very genuine reasons people don't turn up for appointments, that was mine."

It's not about tiny minds at all and of course there will be situations where people through no fault of their own can't attend.

However some centres said 40% of people haven't turned up, I can't imagine all of those had a situation out of their control.

Understanding works both ways.

And it feels inappropriate to say somebody has a tiny mind if they don't agree with your way of looking at things.

"The head of NHS said today that they normally have a list of people who can turn up if there are any left over at the end of a session so they are not wasted, obviously they can do staff if it is given in a hospital setting

We have been doing the same, had 48 left yesterday and got 48 people come in at very short notice, involving some doors being knocked on and came out in their pj's and lots of phone calls, did all our volunteers and emergency services

Well done, all of you!

Thank you, we had great fun doing it, loads of patients we hadn't seen for 10 months, lovely to know they are all okay, teamwork was awesome, all volunteering their weekends

Aah..it must have been very comforting for your patients to see you..what a great team!

Thank you, very rewarding, it was amazing, despite working in the car park in the snow, expected lots to not turn up, we had a full list, shows how much folk need to get this done "

Definitely, I think most of us can't wait to be jabbed!

Some clinics are sending letters to invite people if they have enough warning. With the royal mail admitting in the last week they have postal delays it may not even be their fault. They may not get the letters until after the clinic date.

For this reason we are calling people to invite them and have a pretty high attendance rate.

I know in some areas like London because the postal service is awful at the moment it is only being offered by telephone.

I'm not saying there are genuine reasons why somebody wouldn't come however I think it is also naive to assume that some people don't just waste appointments.

Either way it is a shame that vaccines could possibly go to waste.

"Not a few but loads of them!

Apparently GPs have to throw them away rather than give them as a 2nd dose.

Anyone else seen this?

As a GP practice manager, I can assure you this does NOT happen, we have a shortlist of folk we call at very short notice, which we did last night at the end of our 13 hour clinic, all 1179 doses delivered

"

Same for us in Kent, spent 48 solid hours on the phone to get the clinic filled, we have had 99% attendance. Not sure what is meant to happen to the day job while we deliver this though!!

So do we, patient facing roles are in this cohort.

I think it will get more difficult to get it all used up when all the staff have been done as they tend to be who we are using left over vaccines on.

Bearing in mind that we are now doing c300,000 vaccinations a day, an idea of the number of wasted vaccines would add some context to this.

There is alwaya going to be some wastage, so without knowing that it's just another pointless headline.

I don't think they has yes there has been teething problems but that was to be expected.

We have managed to vaccinate 3.5 million people as of yesterday so that number will be even higher by the end of today in just 6 weeks.

Yes there have been some issues but on the whole it has been a roaring success.

"I see there's the usual tiny mind, tiny thoughts response from some about no shows.

I hope that everywhere is working through their shortlist so this doesn't happen, there are more than enough teachers, shop staff and public facing staff that can benefit, not just the age based cohorts, some of whom were actually embarrassed at being offered the vaccine before those people yesterday, bless them

We are only allowed to vaccinate in the cohorts given by the government so cant do teachers or shop workers etc. We are still on over 80 and health and social care workers. If you are outside this cohort we cant vaccinate you. The shortlists are of people in the same cohorts (or at least they should be)

If we have spare vaccine, we will administer to anyone who has a patient facing role, rather than let it go to waste

So do we, patient facing roles are in this cohort.

I think it will get more difficult to get it all used up when all the staff have been done as they tend to be who we are using left over vaccines on. "

Already an issue for our PCN, all staff are done and volunteers, we are doing the emergency services and social care with the excess, yesterday we were actually knocking on doors to get people in so we didn't waste any

"No they dont...

Vaccine has to be used in 6 hrs.

Gps have lists of patients and staff they can use the vaccines on.

This is utter rubbish.

Thank you for clarifying what I have been saying, you nurses have been absolutely awesome in delivering and we haven't wasted a drop

I have to say this surprises me because both you and the other lady who is a nurse have said you have 99% attendance.

If this is the case why are there left over vaccines?

I'm not trying to be difficult but surely that would suggest Not enough people in the priority categories are being contacted to come in. If there aren’t enough people in those categories then surely it makes sense to start the next one down.

Because we have had to reject some attendees for allergies at the stage of completing the questionnaire, I had a lot with penicillin allergies yesterday that will have to wait for the AZ one...plus, we can't guarantee 6 doses from every vial, so we have to be a bit cautious with the need we book, we actually thought we would run out yesterday, thankfully turned out not to be the case, it is really difficult to manage logistically tbh

Well if you invite 1000 people that would be 10 left over surely not to different to get 10 to have the vaccine at short notice.

Surely some of those people will have someone with them so that person could be offered it so I was just surprised they were having to actually go and knock on people's doors. I agree they should be used if there are any left over it just seems that this is happening quite a lot all over the country.

No problem, sadly I have a wealth of knowledge, so happy to share, those allergies are not contraindicated for the AZ or the Moderna...Pfizer did update their allergy list, but we haven't wanted to take chances, as we know we have the AZ very shortly, it made sense to err on the side of caution

Some attend but for various reasons thay cant have the vaccine. Others say they will come but dont attend. It is the number in the cohort that is the issue.

Also it is not up to those giving it we are all bound by rules and regulations. We cant go into the next cohort until the current cohort for our PCN area is complete. It's all rather complicated but surgeries are working as groups not working alone on just their own patients.
