Doesn't the nhs get overwelmed every year with old people I know I could never get an appointment with a gp because it was full of old people so you could never book in advance you had to ring on the day and hope there was a cancelation which is handy when your in full time employment take a day of work in the hope that some one cancels....that is why I went private it's very reasonably priced excellent service and if I didn't have to pay the segment of tax that's awarded to the health care I could comfortably pay for private and have some change left over.

The telegraph recently had to issue an apology over a column by that odious twat toby young denying the seriousness of covid.(saying having a cold protects you etc)

Some tory,to his credit, has ripped into him and young has deleted 100,000s of his tweets.

I don't know all the figures with regards to the article and I won't read the article due to a paywall.

I will say this. There are around 6k ICU beds in the UK and nearly 4k Covid patients currently in those beds. I'd say at 65% occupation that's pretty damn stretched when we have only considered one condition.

Think of all the other reasons someone may need an ICU bed and simple maths tells me they are full

They must be really quiet of they've got the time to spend taking critically ill patients up to and over a hundred miles from the London hospitals..

Three weeks ago a relative took a patient from East Surrey to Portsmouth as they were full then with patients from north Kent/east London..

Now it's Northampton and Newcastle and as the numbers rise up north the journeys will reverse..

The telegraph has an agenda and people should be aware as said of the dangers of buying into such stories in case when the free market offers the solution they rush to embrace it..

One reason hospitals appear empty is that (in the hospital my mum was in anyway) the number of beds has been cut drastically to enable the correct distance between patients and staff nursing individual patients.

Winter pressures are always a thing... add covid on top and the type and acuity of patients that brings in....

My take on this is that capacity is in reference to ICU beds and staff. The almost sole focus on covid has then led to other wards getting closed and operations being cancelled. Overall the NHS isnt at capacity but with regards to ICU it is .

OK so let me break it down for you as to WHY.

I live in cornwall. Pre covid our hospital was put in black alert at least 6 times a year!! We have 1 hospital in the county 1!! We have community hospitals but 1 major. We also have the biggest elderly population, lots of tourists and second home owners.

Our hospital isn't enough to cope with demand at the best of times. Let alone now!!

This is the problem. Chronic NHS under funding, not enough hospitals per capita. Also budget cuts and 13 years of tory rule.

where we live the population has expanded 4 fold in the 14 years we have lived here but no infustructure put in place

people still have to travel to either stevenage or bedford for hospital appointments which increases the pressure on them

maybe as part of planning approval for the building companies they should have to build smaller local hospitals for local residents

they have built a new school which has already had to have an extension built on it

No foresight at all.

Someone worked out the other day our hospital capacity has shrunk by a third but our population has doubled in size.

Yet they sold off a massive highly suitable hospital site (the old mental health institution) for housing.

Posts like this really get to me. When the nhs as millions waiting for ops they cant get due to theatres being turned into makeshift icu wards...then someone posts a thread by a paper with a agenda to say the opposite. Is totally irresponsible to me as we need to get the message across that this virus is filling hospitals and killing over a 1000 a day.

I have a medical condition and I was signed off by my consultant. Who I now need to see again. Before this wave I warned I'd be waiting up to a year!!

Now it could be double.

No I wont die in that time. However, I could be more disabled and require more treatment than I currently need.

My GP can't prescribe it because its immuno suppression. So I have to wait.

If any only if I am unable to move my hands or walk they will consider it an emergency!!

So I'd say they are under pressure

very true that's the only down side to private when I was choosing which insurance to take out I asked about a&e and they said it's the ambulance service which stops them from been an a&e.

We had News reports from Italy in March which were horrendous and made me sit up and listen.

I have asked all along why didn't they let cameras into the hospitals to show exactly what is going on here as some people don't believe it. they have started doing more News reports on it now and it is bad. Unless of course all those people in beds seriously ill and the nurses and doctors who sound and look knackered are all actors and this is all a game of course

Me and Ash were talking about this the other day and we agree although I guess they probably don't want to allow camera crews in because of risk of infection but now feel they have no choice to show people.

There are people that even if they saw it with their own eyes would still deny was happening though.

You could flip this the infustructure is fine. But the population is it hi. If it was a problem to humans we would want a cull is is not time to cap or cull the the population?

Not all hospitals have ICU units or are recieving Covid patients as they will be reserved for other patients requiring ICU.

Also the number of people attending hospital is down as people are scared of going. Fewer people travelling means fewer accidents. And closed pubs means fewer fights or d*unken accidents. I is however are still near breaking point

Both Tory and Labour governments have treated the NHS with contempt. That being said most of the people I know who work in it claim hugely mismanaged budgets, waste, not listening to the frontline people and management taking backhanders for most of the problems. Both the Tory's and,Labour have been privatising elements of it for years too.

And some wards have been converted into ICU wards which have fewer beds. Let’s not forget 46k staff are currently on sick leave or in isolation due to covid. There is a real crisis in hospitals right now.

All of this. The SE London/Kent and NE London/Essex issues that arose before Xmas were pretty severe. The issues are now just moving to different regional borders across the country for one reason or another

Ice cream tests positive for coronavirus in China

Coronavirus has been detected on samples of ice cream in north China, prompting authorities to seize thousands of potentially contaminated products.

People thought to have come into contact with the batches, produced by Tianjin Daqiaodao Food Company, are now being traced by authorities in the the northern Tianjin municipality.

All of Tianjin Daqiaodao’s products have also been sealed and contained after the company sent three samples to the municipal centre for disease control this week – and all tested positive for Covid.

Epidemiological investigations conducted so far indicate the company produced the batch of ice cream using raw materials, including milk powder imported from New Zealand and whey powder imported from Ukraine.

Tianjin Daqiaodao also confirmed that as of 2pm on Thursday, its 1,662 employees were placed in quarantine and put through nucleic acid testing. Of them, 700 have already tested negative for Covid while results for the remaining 962 employees remain to be confirmed.

Dr Stephen Griffin, a virologist based at the University of Leeds, said the incident should not generate “panic” and that it was “probably a one-off” which “has likely come from a person”.

“We probably don’t need to panic that every bit of ice cream is suddenly going to be contaminated with coronavirus,” he told Sky News.

"The chances are that this is the result of an issue with the production plant and potentially down to hygiene at the factory."

The cold temperature that ice cream is stored at, and the fact it contains fat, could explain why the virus had survived on the samples taken, Dr Griffin added.

Anti-epidemic authorities in Tianjin said of the food company’s 4,836 Covid-contaminated ice cream boxes, 2,089 had successfully been sealed away in storage.

Some 935 boxes of the ice cream, out of 2,747 boxes that entered the market, were still in Tianjin at the time of the positive test result – and only 65 were sold to markets.

The city has contacted regulation authorities in the provinces where the ice cream had already been sent, so it can be properly traced.

Meanwhile, Tianjin officials have taken measures to disinfect the production plant and instructed local residents who may have bought the ice cream to report to the relevant medical bodies in their communities.

Why is the death rate high in the UK at a time of lockdown. Has the food chain been contaminated in anyway or was the new variant already transmitted? Some households have one person test positive to Covid 19 and others test negative in the same house.

What has to be remembered is that if allowed to spread unrestricted this virus has the potential to double the number of people infected every week. With no measures to slow the spread it wouldn’t take long to go from 50% empty hospitals to 200% full!!!!

Ice cream tests positive for coronavirus in China

Coronavirus has been detected on samples of ice cream in north China, prompting authorities to seize thousands of potentially contaminated products.

People thought to have come into contact with the batches, produced by Tianjin Daqiaodao Food Company, are now being traced by authorities in the the northern Tianjin municipality.

All of Tianjin Daqiaodao’s products have also been sealed and contained after the company sent three samples to the municipal centre for disease control this week – and all tested positive for Covid.

Epidemiological investigations conducted so far indicate the company produced the batch of ice cream using raw materials, including milk powder imported from New Zealand and whey powder imported from Ukraine.

Tianjin Daqiaodao also confirmed that as of 2pm on Thursday, its 1,662 employees were placed in quarantine and put through nucleic acid testing. Of them, 700 have already tested negative for Covid while results for the remaining 962 employees remain to be confirmed.

Dr Stephen Griffin, a virologist based at the University of Leeds, said the incident should not generate “panic” and that it was “probably a one-off” which “has likely come from a person”.

“We probably don’t need to panic that every bit of ice cream is suddenly going to be contaminated with coronavirus,” he told Sky News.

"The chances are that this is the result of an issue with the production plant and potentially down to hygiene at the factory."

The cold temperature that ice cream is stored at, and the fact it contains fat, could explain why the virus had survived on the samples taken, Dr Griffin added.

Anti-epidemic authorities in Tianjin said of the food company’s 4,836 Covid-contaminated ice cream boxes, 2,089 had successfully been sealed away in storage.

Some 935 boxes of the ice cream, out of 2,747 boxes that entered the market, were still in Tianjin at the time of the positive test result – and only 65 were sold to markets.

The city has contacted regulation authorities in the provinces where the ice cream had already been sent, so it can be properly traced.

Meanwhile, Tianjin officials have taken measures to disinfect the production plant and instructed local residents who may have bought the ice cream to report to the relevant medical bodies in their communities.

You can walk into any hospital and find empty wards...essentially because elective surgery has been cancelled.

Those knee and hip replacements aren't happening, so certain areas of any hospital will be deserted.

Photos of empty wards taken by photo journalists may not tell the whole story.

Both Tory and Labour governments have treated the NHS with contempt. That being said most of the people I know who work in it claim hugely mismanaged budgets, waste, not listening to the frontline people and management taking backhanders for most of the problems. Both the Tory's and,Labour have been privatising elements of it for years too."

All praise needs to be paid to our Nhs staff ( doctors, nurses, ambulance staff, poters and domestics also the volunteers) But for our sins we have come to accept that the NHS has been underfunded by numerous governments of all parties. And there is a culture where we still think it is the best in the world. Well it is time for everyone to admit that it is not "polititians and public". There needs to be an independant review of the whole Uk Nhs services and the dead wood needs to be removed trust bosses and quangos. Why do we have so many admin staff and managers of managers and outdated ineffective and overpriced information technology in a health sevice. If this was a private business the administrators and liquidators would have been in years ago and would have streamlined the business to make it more effective. I for one have full admiration for our NHS but do feel it needs to be re amalgamated back into 1 NHS and modernised into what should be the pride of the Uk and for that matter the world. We need more beds and better paid staff. And maybe a 3rd less admin

One of the big issues in hospitals us that whilst the demand is reduced in some areas, it is increased in others. There have been some videos of "empty hospitals", but they have been filming quiet areas at quiet times... for example filming out-patient & day-patient areas at night to give a skewed view.

There are also lots of "non serious" treatments that have been cancelled to free up resources, such as staff and oxygen, for covid treatments.

One of the most serious issues though has been the oxygen demand. The infrastructure that supplies to the wards just wasn't designed to cope with the volume of gas that's being required.

Also, the head of the NHS said in interview last week that they are treating more patients with less staff than at any time in history.
