Cancer screening vs covid

Should cancer screening programmes be put on hold for covid? Is this not creating a problem for later on if people are unable to access cancer screening services? I understand the need to tackle covid head on at the minute but at the same time how much longer can we carry on putting other life saving work on hold? This post isnt to stir the pot or cause offence or argument.

I know that most smear tests have been put on hold.

Its a really difficult one because obviously it makes sense to only have people in doctors surgeries that absolutely have to be there to minimise contact.

However Last time we had lockdown mine wasn't rearranged for 8 months and that is quite a long time if they find problems.

One of my in laws is screened for cancer and they have been running pretty much as normal, apart from a little more staff abscence, needed a negative covid test before attending . Cancer treatment on the other i am guessing is not running anywhere normally.

Is it still the case because it was here until just before Christmas then they started cancelling routine cervical screening appointments.

They are still doing them for women with symptoms or those who are at very high risk though here.

Cancer referrals in greater Manchester are down and a lot more are presenting at a and e at stage 3 and 4 usually terminal. I sit on a cancer pathway board as a patient rep. This is a time bomb.

the backlash of cancer is unfortunately going to kill a lot more people than covid and a lot will be way younger than covid has.

public health england will never give us those stats on a daily basis.

I think it's all very dependent on the area, the pressures etc. My smear went ahead in May, which I was surprised about. I was also surprised to get a call yesterday, telling me that my outpatient appointment on 21st is an in-person appointment, albeit at a different hospital further afield. It's the sort of thing that can't be done properly on the phone BUT I fully expected it to be just on the phone. So seems they're trying to keep things moving here (my appointment would have been at Manchester Royal Infirmary, had it gone ahead as first planned, for context on location).

I don't disagree. However our experience of a cancer scare in November was very positive and we're in a neighbouring GM authority to you. Mr KC was seen in person within 2wks, he had several diagnostic tests on the same day as the consultant appointment (he was there a whole half day). Then they arranged surgery to remove the lump under GA within a further 2-3wks (involving Covid swabs taken at home prior etc). He got basic results by letter and then a quick call from the consultant on Christmas Eve. No cancer. Fuck knows what it is, but at least it's not that.

This must be based on area. I've had a cancer screening in march, treatment in may and another screening on Xmas Eve.

I also know 2 family members and 3 friends who have also had cancer screening during lockdown.

Agree. I was diagnosed with throat cancer in late June, started intensive treatment in July and had last dose 26th August (2 chemo and 30 radiotherapy)Then regular checks which are still ongoing and will be for a very long time. Not once was I put off/cancelled. I have nothing but praise for the NHS and the staff at Derby Royal Hospital

Its a shame the private hospitals cannot pick up the slack per se during this pandemic

I know a lot of people are resorting to going private in order to be seen but that is unaffordable for many, even if nhs counters the cost for the most important operations

A local young lady to me hd her operation delayed due to Covid. She has an aggressive form of cervical cancer which is rapidly spreading to other parts including her vagina. She needs a full hysterectomy.

I think it's wrong that something so life threatening is being delayed.

Wrong on every level. How can anyone justify delaying her life saving treatment. I'm sure if you asked a 90 yr old in a care home they would wish for the young lady to have her operation.

How could the 90 year old in a care home help with a cancer operation ?

I was diagnosed with Bladder cancer back in 2019, pTa TCC. The support group I belong to on Facebook there are some that have had their checks ups pushed back or treatment delayed whilst for others there have been no change though looking at the way things are with hospitals I do think things will get worse for those needing treatment.

You are right. Vivid has affected much more than cancer patients. There are people suffering other ailments. A friend at work is needing knee replacement surgery and this has been cancelled. Poor bloke is still hobbling everywhere.

I'd hate to think of the long term impact of health Covid has had on the population.

If you was going to be diagnosed with Bladder cancer you'd want the diagnosis I got. Apart from initial surgery and shot of chemo I have to have a camera put my penis and into bladder over the next few years. Hopefully there is no reoccurrence and that will be the end of it.

I thought that was to assist with hospital beds for the intended influx of Covid patients?

They were. A close friend had urgent cancer treatment at a private hospital in London which her normal NHS hospital was using as a covid free environment.

They are. My surgery in August was done by an NHS surgeon working in the private hospital and Mr KC had his suspicious lump removed in November on the NHS but in the private hospital.
