From the land of haribos.

During the time of brexit and the pandemic it is even more important to support your local businesses, that is what we do, we like to go to the different shops for the things we need rather than to go to a super giant like amazon, do you do the same too?

I try to when possible it makes me sad when I see so many shops closing down

Where possible we support local businesses.

The butcher delivered this morning actually. Poor chap got the shock of his life because I was still asleep and had to answer the door all dishevilled and not in a good way.

It's a shame something this big, this damaging has to happen to get people to rethink about what's really important close to them.

Hopefully more will think about the positive impact of using and supporting local more than before, spending more quality time with family and friends than they used too and learning to accept help offered by those around us. There's lost of good coming out of the pandemic if we want to see it as will with Brexit.

I dislike the way that bigger businesses, who often pay minimal taxes here, have put many smaller businesses out of business. If we want public services to be able to provide decent service levels, we have to be selective in how we spend our money. It also includes for me, not using businesses that don't treat staff as employees, using the pretence of them being selfemployed. This starves the country of taxes, that you and I have to pay instead, or suffer poor care, NHS and other local services.

It's always better to do business locally, as long as they are reasonably priced and giving great service levels.

We use two butchers. The one we use the most is excellent and provides an great service. We're fairly new to the other one but so far no complaints. I phoned an order through yesterday afternoon and it was on my doorstep this morning.

/deliveries so you can still support them from home

I think some local businesses have benefited. The ones who've organised local deliveries and made up weekly boxes etc have increased trade.

Coop or chippy as pubs are shut. And a chemist.

Everywhere else is a short drive away.

To be honest Ive not bought anything online for ages anyway.

Id buy local and independent if I could.

That is a very valid point but you have to remember most of these business do not make huge amounts of profit. If you worked out the hours these people worked compared to what they earn, a lot of them are on less than the minimum wage.

They simply don't get the discounts the big companies do.

They work for theirselves, they enjoy the freedom that gives them. If we all had the same opinion as you, it would just be about a dozen massive corporations controlling the prices and markets.

We have a local independant coffee shop near us... it's next door to a Costa .... guess which one has the queue??? heres a clue... coffee is almost twice the price of the other one but the coffee is no better

That isn’t always the case, I own a small business and my prices are on par, or under, the RRP of the brands I sell. Plus you get better customer service from an independent, they don’t remember your birthday and send you a card and a gift, they don’t know when things are hard for you and lend a listening ear, they don’t congratulate you on a new baby etc etc etc

I suppose you get what you pay for after all!

That said, is it any wonder businesses can’t compete when they’re constantly being undercut by massive conglomerates.

I have three children and seven grandchildren. I'm on a limited budget and my eldest lives in Wales.

Where do you think my limited money will be spent in order to visit and treat my grandchildren: in my local shop where a loaf cost £1.60 or the supermarket 15 minutes walk away for 80p?

I commend those who will leave themselves and their family without to support strangers. I'm thinking about me: my kids get to pick the nursing home, the local shop owner doesn't.

To stay local I would have to visit a few shops to get what shopping I wanted, in the current climate I won't be taking that risk

We do use the shops now and then but this use local theme that is going on at the moment won't suit everyone's finances. It is Ok saying help keep those business going or you will lost it, but if you are on a budget you may not be able to keep yourself going never mind them

I also have an issue where a programme on this morning that has an odious judgemental presenter on who keeps pushing this...surely we should be asking people to spread it around if you can as people may lose jobs in the bigger firms if people all swop to local instead.

Many people in my area seemed to enjoy walking local today

I decided to drive away from my house to keep myself and others safe and protect the NHS

On my 12 mile stroll upon which I encountered almost no one I passed by formark reservoir

I remember an odoously judgmententll who ha regarding travelling for safety

You really do need to accept that people can have a different view from you without it affecting you this much that you bring it onto any thread you can and attack people while doing it
