Australia don’t think the Oxford vaccine is sufficiently effective. If correct, will we still have lockdowns for coming year, if not longer?

Its not Australia per se, its a group of scientists over there.

Just like in the UK, we have different groups of scientists arguing different viewpoints.

Australia continues to vaccinate with the AZ/OX vaccine.

Lockdown depends on the amount of disease in the community.

This depends on factors beyond any vaccine. Border control and managing the disease burden already in the community. The virus will eventually evade any vaccine, too, and the faster it spreads the faster that will be.

Australia can wait because it's handling its shit. We can't, because we didn't.

We hoped for vaccines over 50% efficacy. Oxford is well over that.

Yes, I think we will have lockdowns for this year ( don't know about longer) as the vaccine is only going to make a difference to our lives if people follow the rules as well.

Despite being told the majority are complying, I don't actually see evidence of this where I live.

It could also be in part a political issue in Australia, given the recent abandonment of the UQ vaccine. But I've not been following closely to be able to say.

I'm just sick of posts deliberately or inadvertently designed to heighten peoples despondency, we get enough of that crap daily on the news. The OP might just as well have asked if anyone knows next weeks euromillions winning numbers, the answers would be equally accurate.

That's not to say I agree with your perception that it is designed to heighten despondency per se, it's simply a question and others have answered it..

We are in trying times with lots of uncertainty for many people and perfectly understandable there are different views and worries because of thst..

Perhaps if this is getting to you, maybe give the virus forum a swerve perhaps..

Not read their published review of the vaccine, which will detail anything important, if there really is anything new, of any note.

If we did only have this 1, its published research evidence is strong and should see hospital admissions and deaths falling. Our key aim is to reduce the load on the NHS and infections leading to serious illness...

It's not the only vaccine that we have, so we're fortunate. The problem is that we're fairly slow at the worst point in the year, to vaccinate with anything.

The other measures that we take will reduce infection levels, such as masks, distance and home working. 2021 isn't going to be free of the virus.

My understanding is that the Therapeutic Goods Administration are looking at vaccines slowly, because they can afford to do so, given near zero disease burden in Australia. Beginning rollout in February, which they brought back from March.

Take a look at all the government decisions over the past year: have we been ahead of the curve, or running in just to catch up? Then take a look at where we are now and where we'd need be to avoid lockdowns.

I'd guess there's a decent chance we won't have one by the end of the year. Depends on the speed of vaccinating the general public and reduction of hospitalisation.

the media are going to find the worst case scenario all the time and hi light it

we have some vaccines that are being rolled out now and we should be pleased this is the case

moving on the race is going to continue to develop the worlds best vaccine as no doubt there is a vast amount of money to be made and therfore scientists from around the world may cast a shadow over other countries vaccines
