Well Cresida Dick has just made it clearer . . .

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick said Mr Johnson's bike ride was not against the law.

However, she told the BBC "local" is a "relative term" and, for her, means "if you can, go for your exercise from your front door and come back to that front door".

What the frip does that mean exactly? "Start at your front door, come back to your front door!?"

Wouldn't that be the way we all would it it?

Sorry. Am I missing something?

My interpretation of that is you either walk, cycle, run or alike to / from your front door. You don’t get in a car and drive elsewhere to exercise.

Perhaps she meant walk or cycle rather than drive to a place then do your exercise, whichbis all very well but if you live in a densely populated area you are more likey to be in close contact than if you drive to a more remote area, FFS cant people just use common sense, if the world carries on like this we will need instructions on loo roll on how to use it.

I wouldn't have thought riding a bike for exercise is against covid rules. I think going outside of your area in a car to do the exercise would be.

I think she means if you are going to have exercise, start at your front door, IE cycle/walk/run from your front door

Yea. I see that, but like the regulations are now - it doesn't say that. And she is the one telling Police officers to deal with it.

I drove passed my local park today and thought I might go in as my journey was essential. Until I noticed the carpark was full...it holds around 400 cars.

Quite a few have not got the message me thinks

No triathlon, mixed forms of movement. It creates a 2 tier system, with those able to scarper long distance being let off. Johnson is surrounded by royal parks in Central London, which would have kept his carbon footprint lower too - perhaps his true colours are showing. He's in it for himself and not green?

How did Boris get to the park thats quite a long ride to get there? 7 miles?

If he did ride there then I can see a problem. If a government driver took him that's appalling really.

True but most don’t allow cycling within the parks just along designated roads, it’s probable he followed the central cycle highway which goes from central London out to Stratford and back again

My understanding is there if you go for a long walk or cycle that isn't a problem but if you drive for 6 miles lets say to exercise then that is considered a breach. It may not be against the law but it certainly is against guidelines and surely people can use common sense.

The problem with anything not very specific us some will play fast and loose, when it's open to so many different interpretations it's not only confusing for some it's piss poor for those implementing it..

It's akin to not having a speed limit in a built up area and asking people to follow the spirit of driving safely..

Wishy washy liberalism and flim flamming about is not what's needed..

The clearer and tighter the exact specifics on what is legal and permitted, the harder it is for the Upper Tier of society to find rxcuses, should others happen to shine a bright light of attention on them. They'd prefer a multitude of public officials, the media and the public to spend countless hpurs on the topic, than accepting any personal responsibility or blame for anything. Cressida Dick et al have nothing else that's important to do, how dare you even consider it! If people want to drive to Durham, or anywhere, from anywhere else, if they are using their common sense, to test eyesight, or take local exercise to others, that's of course the way it should be. If we're going to be very specific about what the public is only permitted to the letter, it will be after the Upper Tier haven't much further need for more, or we need to be hoodwinked that everything is tickety boo.

7 miles on a bicycle in London is not very far or even strenuous. I can easily go out on my bicycle and do 65 miles plus and be no further than 5 miles from my front door at any one point.

In Wales the rule is clear - you can excercise from home, but you cannot drive to excercise. It doesn’t mean it isn’t abused and some pretend they don’t understand it though.

I would have thought it is clear the same rule applies in England as well. If not, I can’t see why not

"Driving your car to exercise isn't against the rules. However."
and for some its essential... We drive to our local park.. yes we could walk out across the back of the houses across muddy fields, uneven paths and get to our local park... however my daughter is disabled and cant manage that... so we drive 2 miles to the car park and then walk on the path that is more suitable ( and can use the wheelchair for her on the bad days)

The rules clearly state you can drive to take exercise

You can continue to exercise alone, with one other person or with your household or support bubble. This should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area. You should maintain social distancing. See exercising

OP, I guess most are looking for loop holes forgetting what the principles are. Is it essential and can you avoid doing it are two questions to ask imo.

So many want such precise exact rules so as they aren't confused however they then spend a lot of time try to find loop holes in the very rules they want... Lol

"My interpretation of that is you either walk, cycle, run or alike to / from your front door. You don’t get in a car and drive elsewhere to exercise. "

So if you own two homes 100 miles apart, can you run between the two front doors (asking for a friend who is a knobhead)

If only there was a really clear simple way to explain it that everyone could then follow...

Maybe

STAY AT HOME

SAVE LIVES

PROTECT THE NHS... oh wait

Maybe a catchy clear title, how about?

NATIONAL LOCKDOWN:STAY AT HOME... oh wait

I've got it... a clear brief summary, how about?

Summary: what you can and cannot do during the national lockdown

You must stay at home. The single most important action we can all take is to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.

Clearly compliance with the rules varies greatly between areas then. I live about 1/2 mile from a National Trust property which is open for visitors to walk in the Grounds. Before Christmas there would have been at least 200 cars in the car park today there were less than a dozen.

It can be. Just doesn't go well with trying to word something simple that our population can understand and then execute.

During the first lockdown the guidance on driving to exercise was that your period of exercise should last at least twice as long as the travel time (or something like that). Which seems reasonable.

Want an hour's stroll? Find somewhere 15 mins away. Want to drive to a beauty spot an hour away? That's 4 hours walking, my friend. Not 30 mins admiring the view with a flask of tea... But my friend is a fell runner - have at it!

Last time I craved woodland. I drove there, walked, drove home. It helped my mental as well as physical health.

This time I'm mostly craving gin...

Even though that sounds unlikely it is possible, where I grew up there was a place where bishops lived years ago, and it was rumoured underneath it did have escape tunnels that took them far away from the property and brought them out near other places. It always fascinated me.

"The most important military citadel in central London is Pindar, or the Defence Crisis Management Centre. The bunker is deep beneath the Ministry of Defence on Whitehall.[3] Construction took ten years and cost £126.3 million. Pindar became operational in 1992, two years before construction was complete. Computer equipment was much more expensive to install than originally estimated as there was very little physical access to the site.

Pindar's main function is to be a crisis management and communications centre, principally between the MOD headquarters and the actual centre of military operations, the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood. It is reported to be connected to Downing Street and the Cabinet Office by a tunnel under Whitehall.[4] Despite rumours, Armed Forces Minister Jeremy Hanley told the House of Commons on 29 April 1994 that "the facility is not connected to any transport system.""

It absolutely is a storm in a teacup. But whatever he does or his 1st reports... Or even the Queen was dragged into it in these fora he is slaughtered. I don't like the guy but I think we are way to hung up on personality and personal insults when we all need a good long look in the mirror and make sure the things we can control, we are doing the best we can at. Throwing insults at Boris or anyone else for that matter is simply childish.

Now I imagine this was a publicity stunt to "connect with the people" that backfired and if he is needing exercise (and why wouldnt he?) maybe they can stick a treadmill or a peloton in his bedroom. Unless people would moan about that and insist on free pelotons for everyone.

I drive my car to my local park to walk my dog and exercise. It’s less than half a mile away. I choose to do that as it is impossible to walk there with a dog and socially distance on the narrow pavements due to parked cars all along the route. So lots of those cars may belong to local people who have made the same decision.

"The problem is the rules are ambiguous and individuals will always bring up a legitimate query.

my support bubble lives 18 miles from me, my nearest family member is 16 miles from me

i moved to where i am for work so no local friends, i am allowed to see my bubble, so does this mean i cant travel to them now?

You can still travel for a support bubble not to see family

If your support bubble was a family member? "

I think it's seemingly allowed. Who's to say that a person isn't a support bubble

Plus people can travel to provide care for vulnerable people. There are many important reasons why people can travel - which, for some, involves each party travelling and meeting at a point between them.

"That bike ride cost the taxpayer a car full of plain clothes protection officers for an hour, plus camera surveillance £300 at least. Coulda put that towards the mancy food parcels. "

"My understanding is there if you go for a long walk or cycle that isn't a problem but if you drive for 6 miles lets say to exercise then that is considered a breach. It may not be against the law but it certainly is against guidelines and surely people can use common sense."

How is it common sense to be against the law to drive 6 miles to walk in a park area but not against the law to cycle 16 miles though and area like newcastle and gateshead.

A 10 mile bike ride is quite a short distance easily doable in less than an hour and I'm hardly the fittest on here.

"No triathlon, mixed forms of movement. It creates a 2 tier system, with those able to scarper long distance being let off. Johnson is surrounded by royal parks in Central London, which would have kept his carbon footprint lower too - perhaps his true colours are showing. He's in it for himself and not green?

Mr Johnson is leading us through the minefield of Covid-19 and those are the thanks he gets. One day you will be singing his praises for saving the NHS and safely bringing us out from the dark clouds under which we are living.

Winners don't do drugs.

Mr Johnson and his government and previous governments are the very reason the NHS is now struggling during this pandemic. They shouldn't have let it run down to get to this situation so what have, we got to thank him for

The reason the nhs are struggling is because there are 50k infections a day and 4000 admissions a day. Because people are spreading the virus.

When you think some cyclists go out for, a 50 to 75 mile bike ride on their own. Where do you draw the line and say what is unacceptable.

Just look on strava, there are some running 12 miles, others walking 7 and then there are cyclists.

Actually, although it appears a very long time but Boris assumed office in July 2019 before going to the country and winning the election in December 2019.. The pandemic was announced in March 2020. The underfunded NHS wasn't solely his fault

If he got on his cycle from his house does it matter how far he rode. If he took his car with cycle on top its up for debate. "

Personally I'd say having a death ratio 2 3rds worse than america was more a pressing issue.

Like I said earlier the fact they refused to even answer the question told its own story.

They were asked a question did he use a car.

They didnt answer.

Its not quantum physics.

He was on a bicycle seen CYCLING from Downing Street for 7 miles. Why would anyone need to ask. No brain science needed

Right..so the press are not allowed to now as questions?

Gotcha.

As a Citizen of the UK you can ask the Prime Minister questions directly by writing . . . Simply search:

"Contact the Prime Minister - Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

I'd imagine there are a few more important questions to answer before he gets to... "Boris did you ride in a car or ride on your bike the other day between 10 and 1030?"

Yep and he will refuse to answer them aswell.

How will we know?

Well he spent the day yesterday avoiding questions.

Ah so you're just making assumptions.

That's fine.

Nope.

Just watch pmq or the select comittee

Its there in gourgous technicolor.

Does it actually matter is more to the point. He's not broken any law.. As I said previously, if Marcus Rashford had cycled, he would have been applauded. Why is ANYONE concerned about a short bike ride

Shrugs.

Why? What exactly would it achieve?
