Nicola Sturgeon reportedly considering closing take away shops. surely this would result in supermarkets becoming busier and with there talk of limiting their opening hours surely that just going to cram more people in to them in a shorter space of time. Back to the take aways though, curious if there's actually any science in this as many places as doing contactless sales.

Thoughts?

Dunno why they'd need to close altogether? Surely if she's that worried about them she could just ban "walk ins" and insist on delivery only?

The first lockdown had them shut in England and the levels reduced. With the more infectious new variant, it would seem sensible to get back to the restrictions of that time and to make the best efforts that we can. If an area has shops then takeaways are not essential services. Gyms would do more good for people who are socially distanced and have great cleaning protocols imo.

something has to be done. making takeaway delivery only wouldn't be that bad. do we really need the likes of costa and Greg's to be open. also I bet the big diy giant manages to stay open claiming they are essential even though most sales has involed items for home improvement instead of essential jobs. again make it delivery only and click and collect for trade buying only trade items.

Why would it? How many take aways do you eat? Let's say I have a family take away once a week (I don't) wouldn't I just buy an extra salad when I did my bi-weekly shop.

Should be just one person going anyway and minimum required for essentials.

Plus order your shop online?

Take away requires people to go to work... extra travel on the road... people literally rocking up at other houses. Plus healthy?

The death toll and infection rate is increasing... we've been doing this over a year. People should be adapting not getting less and less strict.

people dont go to the takeaway because the supermarket was busy and closing them wont make them busier ... people will just buy more stuff in their trip or throw less waste away

if you close the takeaway it stop the staff having to be out, the delivery drivers being out and one less reason for the rest of us to be out and about

if people would follow the spirit of the rules and stay home more they wouldn’t need to legislate or close more places to find a way to make it actually work

Closing them completely or making them delivery only?

It's hardly something that is the end of the world - but one point to consider... I live alone and have been known to order takeaway (for delivery) when my physical health issues mean that I can't cook/prepare food. It means I get a hot cooked meal when I otherwise might not.

That's not entirely true, it was only the big names that were shut. And that was to do with safeguarding the staff (far easy for a chain with the turnover of Mcdonalds to furlough thier staff that were not on zero hours contracts and survive easily) most of the smaller ones were open they just needed to limit people in shops and there were queues outside a bit like the supermarkets, during lockdown 1 pretty much all the chip shops / Chinese / Indian / kebab shops were all open

So do we furlough all take away staff and delivery drivers too ? Most are on minimum wage or zero hours contracts and even if furlough is still 80% of earnings (I’m not sure what it is) 80% of fuck all is really fuck all.. people still need to earn money to survive...

seems to me the ones calling for these total lockdowns that throw people out of work all the time are the more comfortable off ones with decent, steady jobs or people who are on guaranteed payments from the social.

In the real world, people have rents/mortgages etc to pay and kids to feed.

I think it’s actually click and collect for normal (non food) shops she was on about

As it it s_ands any shop can stay open at moment if it offers contactless pick up, it’s that which differs from lockdown one

She actually said

"Not suggesting we would stop people doing that for essential services like food, but for non-essential shopping. Do we need to restrict takeaway services a bit more, so there are fewer places staying open?

Persinally I think they need to give restrictions as they are time to have their affect. We are two weeks into them. Following the free for all legally and illegally at Xmas and ny. Signs are now that things are blunting, with deaths actually fairly flat the whole time (based on day of death, ‘today’s’ numbers had deaths that occurred as far back as Dec 21st)

1 guy who may have the virus going to 20 homes. I've seen our local pizza place. One wearing a mask and 5 others not in very confined space. Delivery guy comes in and picks up 4 boxes. Nobody wearing gloves btw and then taken to up to 4 different households on that trip.

Consider this. I'm a frontline worker. When I'm on duty I'm out the house for 14 hours. Sometimes when I finish I'm hungry, it's late, I'm tired and I fancy getting something from the Chinese along the road. A shop that have run things brilliantly safe imo. If this restriction comes to pass I won't be able to pop in for some food after my shift, I'll have to phone and order, order too much btw as I'd have to make the minimum order for delivery which will turn up at god.knows what time as they only have 1 driver. I'm too tired to cook after saving lives all day, I'm up at 6am for more of the same, I don't have energy or time to cook so I go to bed hungry.

The general population isn't going to starve from not being able to buy a take away but all those businesses should be supported by the government

"Nicola Sturgeon reportedly considering closing take away shops. surely this would result in supermarkets becoming busier and with there talk of limiting their opening hours surely that just going to cram more people in to them in a shorter space of time. Back to the take aways though, curious if there's actually any science in this as many places as doing contactless sales.

Thoughts?

Surely people need to start taking some responsibility for themselves and stop spreading this thing. The sooner we do that the better. Let's not leave it to the politicians to do our responsibility. The rules are kind of irrelevant right now... We all have to do the right thing and we all know what that is. Stay home. Stop spreading the virus.

Consider this. I'm a frontline worker. When I'm on duty I'm out the house for 14 hours. Sometimes when I finish I'm hungry, it's late, I'm tired and I fancy getting something from the Chinese along the road. A shop that have run things brilliantly safe imo. Well firstly... Sounds cheesy but thanks.. Huge thanks.. for being a genuine hero.... Maybe there should be a bit of a local special service for people like you. As doing what you do and going hungry after a 12 hour shift isn't going to end well.

or you could microwave a tesco ready meal ..,takeaways are not essential

they probably dont spread that much , but everyone is apparently at home other than work and still the numbers go up , so they must be getting it somewhere and the list of places left to close is getting smaller and smaller ... jntil people stop bending rules to help the numbers come down, then they will need to keep adding rules to bring them down instead

Don't forget the numbers we're seeing now are the result of infections occurring a couple of weeks ago. Those in hospital would have been infected prior to 2 weeks ago.

Leading up to Christmas it was easy to see so many people letting their guard down and the numbers were inevitably going to rise.

Some of the restaurants around here are doing take away meals just to keep afloat. Personally I can't think that I've had a takeaway since all this kicked off, but each to their own.

its the 8th of January, thats after the 10 day period they suggest symptoms would come out in , hospitalisations might be from then or earlier but the positive tests are also from behaviour that has continued after christmas

dont get me wrong i love a takeaway, ive spent more on uber eats this last year than anything else in my life probably, ill be gutted if they close ... its just frustrating that people can’t see that the only reason restrictions keep getting tighter and tighter and tighter is because human behaviour keeps spreading the virus, and if we want restrictions to ease we gotta knuckle down and stick to the ones we have now 100% or how can we moan when it gets worse

How is getting a take away of your choice especially a front line worker bending the rules. I only occasionally use a take away and I wouldn't thank you for a ding meal after a 14 hour shift. Take aways are perfectly legal and needed

I think, and I could be wrong but the figures are expected to show 2/3 weeks after so expect the figures to rise over the next 10/11 days before any effects show from the lockdown

thats not what was said or implied

its because all the other rules that already exist are being ignored or stretched or even people doing something that might be law but not exactly the spirit of a lockdown... while that continues we will see more and more rules added ... the next being takeaways by the sound of if

I've had a couple of takeaways recently. We've ordered online or over the phone and gave had to wait outside until the food was ready before we could go inside. I don't see what's wrong with that tbh. Takeaways are a little treat for our family. I'd really miss them if they had to shut!

People who are dependent on take away food need to prepare themselves for the unexpected parts of life and plan and prepare for themselves a take away business isn't necessary it's classified as a luxury not having to cook fridges were designed so you can pre cook food and freeze them what day and age are we living in that people rely on others and I noticed someone said about hours worked I used to work 12 hours a day 7 days a week not in a warm environment because I'm a mechanic it was nice to finish relax in the bath while my food was heating up in the oven it's important to eat correctly this stops you feeling exhausted after a difficult shit or day your body is crying out for good food not a quick snack healthy body healthy mind at this difficult period

We are relying on takeaways as we are in self isolating (the whole house is), we couldn’t get a food delivery from the big 4 supermarket, we don’t talk to our neighbours

We only have one small top oven working which was supposed to be fixed today but as the whole house is self isolating we can’t have anyone around

What do we do ???
