West Midlands mayor accuses politicians of 'misleading the public' - and says region is not running out of vaccines

An issue that's been attracting curiosity today is the issue of vaccine delivery.

It started when the GP surgery Health Secretary Matt Hancock visited this morning to mark the launch of the Oxford/ AstraZeneca jab rollout revealed it had not received any of the vials yet.

Since then, Birmingham City Council's leader released a letter co-signed by Labour and Conservative MPs from the city warning they too had not gotten any and their supplies of the Pfizer vaccine were due to run out tomorrow.

That seems to have sparked some panic.

Sky News can now confirm the GP practice visited by Mr Hancock has had its AstraZeneca vaccine delivery - as of 4pm.

The government is denying any national supply issues.

And West Midlands Mayor Andy Street has posted a thread on Twitter saying he's "deeply disappointing to see elected politicians misleading the public over the vaccine situation in Birmingham today, at a time when we should all be pulling together to get through this crisis".

His explanation of "the truth" is below.

We will undoubtedly have supply issues. It's not realistic to think we won't. So people wait an extra day or two. It's not the worst. A little more tolerance is needed.

This ^

It’s not just a matter of running it off the factory line and sent straight out, each batch needs to be quality check.

I found this an interesting read on the process and some of the issues they are facing.

There are no shortages of vaccines. Enough are being held across the west midlands and Warwickshire to administer to everyone. And as children will not be given the vaccine that will mean plenty left over.

I have no problem in saying there is no shortage of vaccines. I have been administering them. The only set back is the government extending the resting period between administration from 4 weeks to 12. Also the dictating of brackets on who is eligible to recieve the vaccine.

I should have added, as the NHS guy said - the media unfortunately report on and highlight the 2 cases where issues have occurred, but not the 98 cases that have had no issues. This in my opinion is one of the biggest problems and has been throughout this pandemic. None of the media in general (particularly the BBC) have covered themselves in any degree of glory throughout this.

The Government arranged for sharing of spare stock between authorities about 3 months ago as part of the build up. Authorities have to notify if this is the case.

Oddly enough in the past NHS authorities weren't able to share stock of spare flu vax's.

We are 3rd highest on the table for vaccinations done.

And 1st highest in Europe.

Including the fact that there have been vaccine shortages at the beginning and the fact that so far we have only had 1.5 million doses available to us. We have vaccinated 1.2 million and of the total amount we have 590 thousand only became available yesterday.

Israel and Bahrain are the only two countries who have vaccinated a higher percentage than us. As of a couple of days ago which is the last numbers I have seen we have done more than the whole of europe combined.

Considering they approved it weeks after us it's not really a surprise?

Here is a thought.. instead of crowing about how great we are, just get it done.

Israel started 11 days after us. Their population is around one eighth of ours.

They also have had issues with vaccine supply. "

Now you mention Israel...a country not known for "taking any shit"... I wonder how they deal with those unbelievers and not wishing to put "the poison" in their body.

Agreed.

Though probs not a great idea to start crowing about being world beating though..especially as other counties have vaccinated much more than us.

Gezus give them a chance.

If people would read what I actually said.

I wasnt criticising what has been done so far..by why start boasting about we are the best in Europe?

What does that achieve exactly?

Because so far the programme even with its hiccups is a job well done.

You haven't answered my question.

Why say we are the best in Europe?

We did that with the death figures and what happened with that?"

I must have missed anyone saying we are the best in Europe. I heard the comment "more than all European countries together"... I also haven't heard (thankfully) the "it's world leading" for quite a while... But then I tend not to listen to the speeches.
