Return of clapping for NHS

Just read this on a news item. Are they serious? What are your views. I feel its an absolute insult to those hard working risk taking members of the NHS . We are nearly a year down the line and a lot have stuck their fingers up at those people and carried on their selfish ways. I for won't be doing it. I will do as I did last year and say a little prayer for all those courageous people some who have lost their lives.

If we want to honour our Heroes of the NHS.

Do as you are told

STAY HOME

STOP MEETING

STOP THE SPREAD.

That is the greatest honour you can do

I whole heartedly agree with you.

I won’t be going out and clapping.......I don’t trust my mouth to keep shut when the old fella and his mrs across the road claps in my direction when during the whole lockdown he’s had numerous visitors to his house.

It’s and he is a hypocrite.

It needs something that shows the displeasure and anger that folk feel towards this Government and their handling.

Something like sit in your car and turn the headlights on or a light in your house window.

Something thats peaceful but can be seen. Going outside and mixing with your neighbours banging pots and pans is the work of a Covidiot.

Vaccinate every one of those hero's above and beyond anyone else.

Extended fully paid holidays for each and every one of the heroes once we are 'clear'.

Never, ever, let them feel let down ever again.

Hey you shouldn't feel embarrassed, yes all key workers should be thanked for what they do, the NHS staff are the real hardcore workers who have to care for the real ill patients with Covid that really places their life on the line more than any other key workers that deliver or work in supermarkets and food supply. So you and all NHS workers and all the 999 workers should hold your heads up high and be proud of the work and risks that you all take for us!!

Yes I get your point! NHS workers are under extreme stress now so say a prayer for them! We made our point last year with the 'clap'... The fact is it's people who are causing the spread of the virus. These are selfish individuals and obviously choose to ignore the daily warnings and distressing stories. The worst are the mindless morons (I'm sure none are members on here!) who crowded outside a London hospital recently with placards claiming Covid-19 is a hoax! They could have been delaying ambulances and medical staff. We are too soft! In some countries (tho not the USA I would guess!) Riot police would've been deployed to disperse these idiots!

Well for a start quite a fair few of them pay as little tax as possible.

Do nurses and other public sector workers not work hard?

Even 1% was rejected out of hand.

Our local hospital was ‘broken’ into last weekend and areas filmed by covidiots to try and prove covid is a hoax.

All it did was scare patients and staff shocking behaviour.

Don't encourage them. We get more than enough idiots parked with headlights on facing into traffic already. With street lighting downgraded to 'Twinkle, twinkle, little star levels they are an inconsiderate and illegal menace.

A light in the window, fine. It discourages burglars who also might sneak in while people are out clapping with the door left open!

Why should anyone be clapping when our own government is unable to support our NHS as I remember many many years ago NHS picketing asking for money from the government and even now requested an increase and government did say no but decided to increase a little but not enough I'm all for the NHS and have family and friends who are part of the NHS but clapping is showing appreciation but we need when safe to do so is something unreal a huge public protest so the government treats our NHS professionally with the money that is required for state of the art equipment for saving lives and decent wages this is long overdue....

James Dyson is worth an estimated £10 billion.

Aside from the fact that he wishes to remain British, pays minimal tax and has everything made abroad ....

What on Earth is he going to do with £10 billion, thats his personal net worth, not what’s being reinvested in the company.

20% of £10 billion is £2billion, am sure he could struggle by on £8 billion and just think what good could be done with that £2 billion for the NHS and other key public bodies.

It was reported today that the bosses of the top 100 ftse companies recieve the average median wage of full time workers (£31,461 a year) within 34 hours work.

Chief executive pay is about 120 times that of the typical UK worker, up significantly from two decades ago.

Estimates suggest it was around 50 times at the turn of the millennium or 20 times in the early 1980s.

Your fine with that then that those at the top get more while those below get less?

You will likely find that the top 100 dont work very hard, in fact barely work at all, they have other so the work and collect all the cream.

Why not take 2% of the Windsor family money and give it back to the people. Pay freeze for mps for 5 years and avtually make companies like Google, Amazon, Starbucks etc pay a higher amount of tax. lastly legalise and tax cannabis, surely we are over the BS that it is a terrible drug by now.

It is this time.

It's "Clap for Heroes" and is supposed to be for the NHS, delivery drivers, teachers, supermarket workers, home schooling parents, anyone you think deserves it.

It's supposed to be a way of bringing back some feeling of community, pride and a little bit of cheer during this shitty time.

Personally I see nothing wrong with that.

"Shouldnt you honor the heroes daily instead of when told to by your government?"

It had nothing to do with the government though.

Honor them whenever you like, but the Yoga teacher who started it thought it would be a nice gesture.

She even called for the last one to stop when it became too political.

I think she does want people to actually show their gratitude, as most don't usually do anything to show it.

It was a nice idea the first time around, although it was coopted.

Now it just feels insulting.

Yes you're overrun because the government dithered, but people are clapping, yaaaay

"I won't be out clapping getting sick of hearing about key workers.

Are you? Hopefully you wnt be sick enough to need them

Everyone that is working should be classed as a key worker

Are you currently working?

Yes worked all through all the lockdowns "

As did quite a few people, so why are you so bitter about clap for the nhs and care staff!.

We clapped for the first week or two and it felt quite emotional, we were all worried and really appreciate all the NHS staff risking their health. However, it soon lost its gravitas and felt a bit patronising.

We’ve both worked throughout lockdown in key worker roles, we didn’t get claps or queue jumping or store discounts but we don’t begrudge the NHS workers who did, we are just thankful we still have our jobs and our health, although we weren’t feeling quite as positive when covid hit our house.

The only real display of appreciation would be for everyone to follow the rules.

I never clapped, it was headology used to take people's minds off it. It made no difference apart from people thinking they were doing something useful.

Stop spreading the virus, wear your mask properly, stop popping into your neighbours because there no real harm in that. There is.

O o O oo

We did clap for a couple of weeks the first time, it was emotional at the time because of what they were dealing with and not knowing if they would get it while doing that.

Then it turned into who can make the loudest noise, so drums, car horns pans etc turned up, then singing as if they were at parties, donuts from boats on the Thames while rows of police cars and people not socially distancing on Westminster Bridge while those poor people were still dying and those NHS workers still dealing with hell....so we stopped going outside to do it.

I won't be doing it this time, not because I don't think they deserve it but because I think the message got lost the last time of why we were meant to be doing it.

Maybe if people went out and banged pots and pans when government put in place the terrible new contracts for GP's or during the student nurse strike or when they stopped funding for nurses and replaced them with loans or loaded to NHS with high interest debt using private finance initiatives people wouldn't need to clap.

I think it can quite easily used as a distraction much like the old fella walking in the garden story.

It detracts from the real issues.

Like many above have posted, I see it as an empty gesture especially some of the people doing it. I'd rather pay a little more tax, see it funded properly and the staff paid at a decent rate.

You know it’s the tax payer who funds that, right? I’m all for giving people the wages they deserve but that’s not really feasible without taking it away again in taxes. We’ve still got to find out how much all the furlough payments are going to cost us in the long run.

"How about a wealth tax on the top 100 richest people in the country, say 20% of their wealth and share it out amongst key workers. it's sad that people think like this.

Why?

Because why should they work hard pay taxes and then just hand over 20% of there wealth

You would be amazed how many people have no issue with that at all.

And then off course factor in how many of those people went to the top schools and universities. "

Wise up. This is utter nonsense. Talking about seizing someone else’s wealth simply because they happen to have it is ridiculous.

We’re all responsible for earning our own crust and looking after ourselves financially. Stop looking to others to do that for us.

Can't we do both?

Personally I liked it as it helped show the support the NHS has from the public.

Does clapping NHS staff get them better pay or treatment? No, but it also doesn't make it worse if we do clap.

What it does do though, is reminds the government that 'we' do care about the NHS. I feel that is important as 'they' obviously don't care and would have happily got rid of it by now if it wasn't for public support.

So, show you support, but 'also' demand better treatment for the NHS and respect them by following the guidelines and keep people safe.

Its nothing of the sort.

Its requesting that people who earn hundreds of times more than people who actually keep society going, contribute a tiny bit more.

Its what happens in fair societies.

Not necessarily no. Obviously there will be a percentage who have opted not to work but the vast majority are honest, hardworking people.

Doesn’t mean they need to look to someone wealthy for money.

Billionaires shouldn't exist because of the massive wealth inequality in the world.

If you're a Tory you won't agree, which is fine, but this is a long standing circular argument with no winner. I'm accused of being a communist in some quarters, which is also not the case.

56% of the world's population holds 2% of the world's wealth. If you think that's OK, then we disagree on a fundamental element of the way the planet is run.

You would be amazed how many people have no issue with that at all.

And then off course factor in how many of those people went to the top schools and universities.

Wise up. This is utter nonsense. Talking about seizing someone else’s wealth simply because they happen to have it is ridiculous.

We’re all responsible for earning our own crust and looking after ourselves financially. Stop looking to others to do that for us.

Hmmm Guardian is truly Tory now then. Don’t you believe in society supporting each other then? Boris the muppet has had every single opportunity handed to him on a silver platter and he’s a dick. Why should billionaires even exist? Much les trillionaires when there are people starving ?

Why shouldn’t billionaires exist? If you have the drive, skill and will to succeed and make enormous amounts of money why should that then be taken from you to provide for those without? Surely someone’s wealth is no business of anyone else. We all carve our own path do we not?

Indeed

Every single wealthy person has strove all their lives

Mean whilst presumably those at the bottom are lazy?

Billionaires shouldn't exist because of the massive wealth inequality in the world.

If you're a Tory you won't agree, which is fine, but this is a long standing circular argument with no winner. I'm accused of being a communist in some quarters, which is also not the case.

56% of the world's population holds 2% of the world's wealth. If you think that's OK, then we disagree on a fundamental element of the way the planet is run."

Yep, agreed. It's fine if you're OK with it.

Not necessarily no. Obviously there will be a percentage who have opted not to work but the vast majority are honest, hardworking people.

Doesn’t mean they need to look to someone wealthy for money.

They arent looking for money

Everyone contributes, or is supposed to,to society.

A fair few of those at the top certainly dont.

Requesting those who can afford it, pay a few extra quid,to help fund tnings we all use,is hardly communism.

Those who can afford it do pay a few extra quid. They are taxed at 40% and then 50% beyond a certain threshold. So, very often they chip in more hence keeping it fair.

Those who actually keep society afloat had a 6 year pay freeze.

That’s just a statement. What is your point?

The point is whilst those at the top see them getting richer, even the ones who do pay tax.

Whilst those who keep society functioning are screwed over and over.

Why are they being screwed over and over? Do they find it hard to live on their salaries? Why wouldn’t they just seek better paid jobs if that was the case?"

I think I'll just leave that there.

"How about a wealth tax on the top 100 richest people in the country, say 20% of their wealth and share it out amongst key workers. it's sad that people think like this.

Why?

Because why should they work hard pay taxes and then just hand over 20% of there wealth

You would be amazed how many people have no issue with that at all.

And then off course factor in how many of those people went to the top schools and universities.

Hahaha wow I didn’t actually realise people believed this were possible. Let’s see teachers, nurses, carers hell all the people that society has realised people can’t do without are most of the lowest possible people in this country. So you’re suggesting that all of these people just ‘get a well paid job’ what would actually happen if this miraculous event happened?

No one needs that much money to live on why would you even think it was a responsible way to live? Counting your millions while people starve on the streets?

Ah it’ll be interesting when you hoick that mantra next time you’re in hospital to a nurse who decided when she was 16 that she wanted to follow a caring and philanthropic career , paid for her own degree , eventually learnt the reality of it all with age and experience and finds themselves trapped by age, wage and skill set yet still hopes what they are doing makes a slight difference over being a guardian columnist.

This thread has come full circle hasn't it...

I wonder if people working in the Arts are enjoying their free training and new careers. Sadly my friends in that very field are not, and neither is anyone working for the NHS.

Still, at least they can all just go out and get a better paid job any time they like.

I will not be going out clapping to watch my hypocritical neighbours who think they are doing their bit by clapping. The same people who very regularly had friends and family round theirs during the first lockdown. But it's ok cos they clapped like wtf!!

Fucking hypocrites! I won't be clapping but I will be continuing to stay at home and abide by the guidelines. Way more useful in my opinion

Most people in the UK own more wealth than most people in the rest of the world, a lot lot more.. if you want a more even global distribution of wealth you need to start by redistributing most of yours. If you don’t want there to be super rich then do not engage with the businesses that generate their wealth...

"Hmmmmm?

"Clap For Our Carers returns tonight at 8pm as Clap For Heroes - but organiser quits after threats""

That's just sad.

She just wanted people to show some support.

The reasons I see for not clapping and getting annoyed at her are completely unrelated and quite frankly ridiculous.

I get that people want more money for the NHS, but that is unrelated to the clap and she can't do anything about the pay. Clap 'and' fight for better pay for the NHS.

I also get that people are annoyed that others are clapping whilst breaking the restrictions, but again that's not hey or the claps fault. Clap 'and' be cross with those people.

If you don't want to clap for whatever reason, that's fine, but stop blaming it for issues caused by other people.

I think the problem is that such situations can often detract from the real issue.

The gmnt clearly jumped on the bandwagon in the summer with Hancock and his NHS badge.

Obviously forgetting they had sanctioned a 6 year pay freeze.

I get people can see them as 2 separate issues but as 99%of people have said..a pay rise is more important than a clap.

I will be clapping. Nothing to do with anything else, most of which is out of our control anyway. I will be clapping them to appreciate the hell they are going through all day every day. I cannot imagine what it is like for them.

So yes I will clapping to show my appreciation.

I didn't clap last time and sure as hell won't be clapping this time.

Clapping is easy...and costs nothing! Nurses don't pay their bills with "scheduled admiration and praise."

Plus, the thought of clapping with hypocrites who froze their pay doesn't sit right with me.

I think it's a little hypothetical for this government to suggest it.

All I'm going to do is keep pushing the government to give these people pay rises through signing petitions and to vote them out when the time comes

"As an NHS worker I find it embarrassing to be singled out. Why isn't it for all of they key workers in supermarkets, food supply, delivery drivers etc...too? "

C, you do a job in the NHS that very few can do. You do fantastic, innovative things and enable people to have a normal lifespan where they otherwise wouldn't. I don't agree with the clapping thing, but I certainly doff my cap to you and your colleagues over there

Just because they are wealtly, being jealous of them isn't justification.

"How about a wealth tax on the top 100 richest people in the country, say 20% of their wealth and share it out amongst key workers."

I know it is a popular sentiment and the wealthy should be made to pay more tax. However to fund a payrise to the NHS and other emergency services it would require a lot more money that making the top tax earners pay more. Unfortunately to pay for these big bills you have to tax all of us more.

If we want a more robust NHS, Social services and benefit system we are all going have to put our hands in our pockets.

We as a nation always say this but when it comes to the polling booth it becomes a different matter.
