Boris Johnson has announced a new national lockdown for England, with people urged to "stay at home" as they did during March's first lockdown.

The prime minister revealed the action in a TV address on Monday night, after being told that COVID-19 cases are rising rapidly in every part of the country due to the new coronavirus variant.

The public are being asked to follow the new rules, which replace the tiers system, from this evening.

People across the whole country will be told to stay at home apart from five exceptions:

for work, if people cannot work from home, such as those in the construction sector or key workers

to shop for necessities such as food or medicines

to exercise once per day at a local location. This can include with one other person from outside someone's household or support/childcare bubble

to provide care or help to vulnerable people

to attend medical appointments or medical care, or to flee the threat of harm or violence.

All primary schools, secondary schools and colleges will move to online learning from tomorrow.

However, nurseries can remain open while childcare and support bubbles will stay in place.

I think my teenager may have been having a small melt down about the exams when they mentioned early years ( she should have had her mock exams today. )

What I can't understand is why, if it's so vital for kids to be in school, as we are being repeatedly told, can they not add school staff to the priority vaccine list so they can have protection and keep the schools open?

I reckon it will be Easter before the whole country will be let out of lockdown jail.

Let's hope that the Covid deniers now realize just how wrong they are and recognise what is really happening.

Also I hope that those people who think it is fine to mass gather in defiance of the law are dealt with severely by the police. In my opinion it is that sort of gathering behaviour that has been part of the acceleration of the spread of the virus.

What does the new lockdown mean for sports such as rugby, football and horse racing? Do the seasons now get suspended again?

The numbers are fubar .

During the first wave there was no extensive testing only hospital admissions basically. The only consist number is deaths.

The number of cases is meaningless without knowing the number of tests.

You can only get a second wave if the first had completed stopped it's classified as just reoccurring and mutating if it's not been controlled and spreading the virus back and forth bouncing around unless it's been contained and controlled which it hasn't and Nicole sturgeon has been doing a better job in controlling it it's just a shame a majority of people just act foolish without any due care and attention but would still expect help it infected which I don't agree with....

This government don't have any credibility, they totally miss the obvious, take U turn after U turn and fail achieve most targets. The PM was only stating last week that schools would remain open, after shutting the schools in London. He needs replacing, I wouldn't trust the guy to run a bath.

We have a few shops here like The Range, that sell a few items of food (like bulk buy crisps and buscuits) just so they can say they are essential and stop open.

Garden centres as well, are stocking a few eggs, some local bread just to get around the rules.

More or less. I think the businesses that have to shut under this lockdown would already be shut under tier 4, so it only makes a bit of a difference to the tier 3 areas (as were today).
