Mask wearing in supermarkets

As it seems not wearing face masks in supermarkets is legal if you have a medical condition, why not let all medical except shoppers have one hour a day shopping together without mask on. To keep the rest of us safer.

You'll get people saying it's against their human rights to deny them to go shopping when they want.

Edinburgh.

But then that might heighten the chances of someone with a medical condition coming into contact with an asymptomatic person who also has no mask. Best sticking with what we have to avoid queueing and inconvenience. As nice as it was of you to suggest giving up an hour of your shopping time to help others. Best leave it to the clever people to sort it out.

Agreed but I'd go further making them shop the last hour of opening. So that the non mask wearers aren't spluttering all over the goods

Fabulous idea !!!! Proper pi55ed us off when folk just flaunt the rules or big them selves up medically exempt... no doubt then though they will all want a disabled parking spot and there wont be enough. Take our reply as humorous...

If they can’t wear a mask they shouldn’t be out.

Mind you a certain supermarket had a hour for nhs staff and vulnerable people...mixing them into one hour...I’m unsure who thought this was a great idea

We are both mask Exempt(mrs anxiety and mr server asthma), we still wear our masks!

A lot of people are faking it, which if found out, they should get a huge fine.

A doctors letter/card should be issued to those that genuinely are exempt. They should be forced to show it upon entrance to any building that requires it.

I go to a supermarket multiple times per week. Maybe I'm just lucky but to be honest I've never seen anyone not wearing a mask. And many of them are wearing one even outside while waiting.

Is this issue blown out of proportion? Even if I came across someone without a mask inside, I'd just give them a wide berth and get along with my shopping. I'm more concerned that someone wearing a mask will give me the virus, it's not foolproof 100% protection.

Can the government please arrange for over 80 yr olds, to do our shopping as they will be vaccinated and thus protected from the bastards who see fit to swan around supermarkets without wearing masks

When I was in Italy over the summer there were no exemptions for mask wearing and they couldn't just be cloth ones at the airport and on the plane.

The only people not having to wear them was those too young to be able to

as s volunteer I'm shopping most days... I see many not wearing a mask.. or not wearing it properly. And cant remember the last time I saw people wiping the trolleys or using hand sanitiser

.. yea they could be like me and have their own but I've not seen them from when they pick the trolley up while I'm waiting. In fact I got tutted at this evening as I was wiping my trolley down before doing my hands and going in

They are NOT protected. The vaccine does not stop infection or transmission, just reduced symptoms if virus caught.

People vaccinated must still wear masks, social distance and obey lockdown and tier rules.

Supermarkets put on a "vulnerable people" hour in the first lockdown for the elderly/disabled. It was 7-8am at our local Sainsbury's. How many elderly/disabled people would walk there and how many might require public transport? There's feck all public transport round here at that time and how many elderly/disabled people want to be or physically can be up, washed, breakfast and dressed in time to be at Sainsbury's for 7am? The hour was, unsurprisingly, woefully under utilised. If you went at 11am ish, that's when it was full of older people.

"Excellent idea What if they're at work etc during that allotted time? "

People forget that disabled people work. Pretty much all support groups and adapted activities for disabled people (before Covid) happened weekdays during work hours. I'd love to use riding for the disabled, but our local centre only operates that side of things weekday daytime (when I'm working).

Yours, a disabled person who comes up against this all the damned time!

Like this but it would be down to stores.

My stores don't even have one way and a limit on numbers in a lane would help.

Where I work we give plastic visors to those who can't wear masks. They're pretty big like a welders mask. You can tell those who are genuine as they're fine with it but it amuses me when some suddenly can wear a mask when you pull out the visor.

During the last lockdown I went shopping in the last half hour the local Aldi was open and never had any issues. Always quiet, barely 2 or 3 people at the checkout. I'm flexible as live alone so appreciate that doesn't work for everyone.

As for non-mask wearers... there were probably 10+ in Aldi on Saturday when I was there. Not saying none of them were exempt but I have a sneaking suspicion not all of them were.

This was brought in by some local supermarkets during the first set of restrictions, but they grouped them with the essential workers.

Out of context comments like this don’t help. Wear a mask or visor at the least...or don’t go shopping and expect to be allowed in. We are not in 1939 anymore and the terrible treatment of Jews by nazis has no bearing on shopping in tescos in 2021.

Masks blatantly don’t work as we can see from the infections increasing.

Unless you have an airtight industrial seal around your mouth and nose, they’re pointless.

Ditch them, they’re no doubt making you more susceptible by breathing in the crap you’re exhaling by lowering your immune system.

I reckon security staff on entrance to supermarkets.

If you don't have a mask on and no exemption card then you don't get in.

Genuine cases can go home to get the card they forgot, and others buy a mask before entry. Asda were giving out masks free

Most folks we see do wear masks although there is no evidence to show that so called face coverings work. As has already been said unless a mask forms a seal and has a min rating it will not stop the spread of bacteria and viruses through breath exhaled and inhaled. Its simple fact that most of the masks being used dont comply to any standard but the people in power have to be seen trying to do something.

Lol we need proper tests carried out with half wearing masks and half not see what the infection rate is like, if a few hundred thousand more die at least we will know the answer. Personally I think most of the masks being worn are pretty crappy I use PP3 ones cost a fair bit but seal around your face and supposedly 99.9% effective at keeping virus out. I do know they are a lot better at keeping crap out from my job paint spraying and making lots of dust, mind you those particles are probably bigger than covids. Also suffer from asthma at times first thing I do when I feel it coming on is put on a mask breathing in filtered air always makes me feel better, might be psychological lol

masks kind of work but it's more about the droplets being exhaled from a carrier than a protection against it medical staff in covid wards should be wearing respirators which actually filter the air.

Another thing folk often forget taking a mask of and putting in your pocket pretty much makes it useless also the maximum wear period is 3-4 hrs then a new/clean one is req

As they say in Tesco, every little helps. Masks reduce spread of particles. Are they 100% effective, no, but nothing is. But every bit of prevention adds up.

But there lies a problem with that. I work in retail and I’m exempt from wearing a mask, should I therefore only be allowed to work that one hour a day????

"As it seems not wearing face masks in supermarkets is legal if you have a medical condition, why not let all medical except shoppers have one hour a day shopping together without mask on. To keep the rest of us safer."

This is unbelievably selfish. Those with medical conditions that prevent from wearing masks do not choose to be this way. Able bodied people wearing masks reduces the risk to those who cannot wear masks for medical reasons.

I'm exempt as I have a brain tumour, asthma, M.E and a couple neurological conditions. I still try and wear a mask whenever possible. Being stared at and judged by people like you truly makes the whole pandemic worse.

I have heard this alot. Those who are genuinely exempt, still wear the mask. Those who don't wear it and make a scene about it, probably aren't genuine. Yes, I'm stereotyping. Tbh if I had a medical reason to not wear a mask, I just wouldn't go out. There are other ways of getting your shopping in."

It's incredibly difficult without imposing on others.

I'm exempt and wear a mask as much as I possibly can. That's my choice and my assessment of managing my condition.

For those who can't manage like I can, they still need accommodation. (Apparently in some parts of the US non mask wearers are click and collect/ delivery only, but the waiting times for both, and the cost of both, have gone up a lot)

The ignorance on this thread beggars belief. I hope you are all aware that the people that are exempt from wearing masks are usually people who have autism, severe learning difficulties, and mental health problems.

These people are usually the most marginalised in society and exceptionally vulnerable and the attitudes of some on this thread are appalling.

How dare you think but it is OK to say that because somebody physically cannot wear a mask but should all be put together to shop for one hour A-day you should all have a little chat with your selves.

I know am I am so sorry but people are just so ignorant.

The problem is some people use exemption as an excuse but their attitudes of so many regarding people with disability or impediment is Disgusting and maybe before the people on this thread post they should be made to walk a mile in someone who cannot wear masks shoes then maybe they will be less judgmental

So you wouldn't go to the doctors? If you lived alone wouldn't get any shopping?

Actually other than one business no others have done is. The reason is because you cannot legally refuse goods or services to someone based on disability. If somebody's disability prevents them from wearing a mos T and they are refused service on that basis it is a very grey legal area.

Who actually tells a person they are exempt? A doctor? Or is it a case of self diagnosis?

I’m being very judgmental I know, but if I see someone in the supermarket without a mask, I give them a wide berth and assume they’re a selfish snowflake.

"Silly question maybe..if the masks don't work, why do nhs staff wear then?"

Properly fitted medical grade masks work, especially when donned and removed in an aseptic manner by someone who knows what they're doing. Replaced at appropriate intervals etc.

What's less clear is if reusing a cheap "single use" blue mask bought on Amazon fifty six times, or applying a converted sock/t-shirt/ill fitted scrap of cloth to your face makes much difference. Watch Herr Boris speaking from Chase Farm Hospital on BBC lunchtime news yesterday and count how many times he touches the outside of his (ill fitted cloth) mask. Clue: a lot of times. This is the problem. Hospital staff working in ICU or in operating theatres are not allowed to touch and adjust the mask with their hands and they don't actually need to do often because they're properly fitted.

You also find many hospitals now have their staff in full helmet respirators because the mask/splash visor combo wasn't good enough.

I do try, I’m not judgemental by nature, and when I do judge a non mask wearer, there’s a niggiling guilt aswell.

We went into tier 4 last Thursday, I rushed to the barbers for a haircut because I wasn’t sure when I’d be able to in the foreseeable, 11 men waiting, only 2 wearing masks, I’d bet my right nut that the 9 unmasked weren’t vulnerable.

I fully understand your point, but law of averages now dictates that a high proportion of non maskers are indeed selfish snowflakes.

Currently work for a supermarket, personally I see it as if your medically exempt you should not be shopping and should have someone else do it for you, as for the hour for them we already do but it's irrelevant because I could serve someone the day before with covid then greet them in the morning so ideally they should have someone be doing it for them

"I go to a supermarket multiple times per week. Maybe I'm just lucky but to be honest I've never seen anyone not wearing a mask. And many of them are wearing one even outside while waiting.

Is this issue blown out of proportion? Even if I came across someone without a mask inside, I'd just give them a wide berth and get along with my shopping. I'm more concerned that someone wearing a mask will give me the virus, it's not foolproof 100% protection."

If you go to supermarket multiple times a week you are really no better than someone who goes in without a mask but only once a week! Less frequent you shop the less you are exposed and the less you expose others. Not got a fridge?

And no you do not have an hour for people who are mask exempt. You have an hour for clinically vulnerable people and the elderly.

Somebody who cannot wear a mask is vulnerable but not necessarily clinically vulnerable.

Again another judgmental comment.

The reason this person may go to the supermarket several times a week is because they are shopping for others, Don't drive so can't carry all their shopping in one go.

I just can not believe how judgmental people are. Im more concerned for society's values and how they look after the most vulnerable than I am for this virus.

Quite right Lorna, but also, there are some people who have no one to help them. I was in the supermarket on Monday and an elderly lady looked very stressed, I asked if I could help and she explained she had no family and lived among elderly people, so couldn't ask them. Where I live, we still have local volunteers, who will help her, so I found the council phone number and suggested she phone them, I hope she got sorted.

There are community charities doing this too.

My experience is that people hate to ask for help, but they will take it. (and if they do ask for help they never ask for anything nice, even when they want it)

Ahh bless her! I work in supermarket and although I cycle I do have a basket back and front I could offer to get essentials for older people in the bungalows opposite me I never really thought ! X

There are community charities doing this too.

My experience is that people hate to ask for help, but they will take it. (and if they do ask for help they never ask for anything nice, even when they want it)"

Yes, this lady didn't know anything about the scheme. We had fliers through the doors with all the details, excellent idea

"Masks blatantly don’t work as we can see from the infections increasing.

Unless you have an airtight industrial seal around your mouth and nose, they’re pointless.

Ditch them, they’re no doubt making you more susceptible by breathing in the crap you’re exhaling by lowering your immune system. "

This is total rubbish. You dont do any harm to yourself wearing a mask. Especially if only for shopping. What about those of us who wear them for hours at a time for work.

Guess what we are all still alive and not dying from breathing in toxins.

Really can't see what the issue is

If your capable of wearing a mask then do so it's not gonna kill ya

Even if they help reduce the risk surely it's better than nothing

Those that cannot wear one for a genuine medical condition should be able to rely on sensible peoples choices to wear one around them to help reduce the risks to them

For a lot of people it's about vanity or point proving

Sadly this doesn't help anyone

For those who can wear masks wear them, for those who can't, well not much can be done about that apart from other people giving them plenty of space, if there is space to do so.

Comments such as make them shop separately or allocate time slots are just stupid

Many vulnerable people are someone's elderly grand parents that cannot wear masks due to respitory conditions

Many of these have enjured more hardships than any of us over there lives so why should we expect them to put there selves out just so narrow minded people can have their way

Too many people in society care only about themselves and disregard others safety and that's why the virus spreads quickly

I bet everyone that could wear a mask would if mustard gas was released

"

I have heard this alot. Those who are genuinely exempt, still wear the mask. Those who don't wear it and make a scene about it, probably aren't genuine. Yes, I'm stereotyping. Tbh if I had a medical reason to not wear a mask, I just wouldn't go out. There are other ways of getting your shopping in.

So you wouldn't go to the doctors? If you lived alone wouldn't get any shopping?

You would have stayed in for 6 months? Because ignorant people can't except there are some exceptionally vulnerable people in our society that cannot wear a mask "

This thread is about supermarket shopping, not doctors appointments (which by the way, are mostly done over the phone anyway) or any other absolutely essential appointment. A supermarket trip can be done by others - neighbours, garda - or delivery. Yes, I would have stayed in for 6 months because I know there are ignorant people out there, and I would not trust them to act in a way which is beneficial to me or my health. I don't think anyone here is saying a truly genuine reason for not wearing a mask should be ignored. I think the point is, people are using that reason to not wear a mask, make a scene about it and then claim human rights. They're abusing exemptions put in place for the ones who need exemptions.

I'm more concerned that someone wearing a mask will give me the virus, it's not foolproof 100% protection.

If you go to supermarket multiple times a week you are really no better than someone who goes in without a mask but only once a week! Less frequent you shop the less you are exposed and the less you expose others. Not got a fridge?

Again another judgmental comment.

The reason this person may go to the supermarket several times a week is because they are shopping for others, Don't drive so can't carry all their shopping in one go.

I just can not believe how judgmental people are. Im more concerned for society's values and how they look after the most vulnerable than I am for this virus."

The judgement of others is and always has been the glue that allows humans society to function. You are correct though, I did jump to assumptions which may be incorrect for which I apologise

"I go to a supermarket multiple times per week. Maybe I'm just lucky but to be honest I've never seen anyone not wearing a mask.

Can't say I've ever seen anyone not wearing a mask either. "

Well, I don't know where you shop but I can normally expect to follow someone into the supermarket who is not wearing one or else someone right behind won't be wearing a mask. Recently the trend is for prats to wear them under the chin so they can talk without restriction to their companion(s).

It is always those with the most to say, and usually non-stop, who aren't wearing them. Chances are they will be extremely tall, for maximum particle dispersion range.

When the lockdown in March started the supermarket I usually go to was not allowing pairs (or more) in. One had to stay in the car. That didn't last long and as with not wearing masks, I'm sure it was because nobody was prepared to confront the type of people who would offer to punch the lights out of anyone who did.

In my experience it is mainly family groups from right across the social spectrum who are the consistent offenders and always with the most to talk about. Single shoppers don't utter a word and in fact barely breathe thanks to their mask!

Nobody is actually medically exempt.

There are very few conditions that would physically stop somebody from wearing a mask and too many people have used asthmas and excuse.

The government is very clear that you are exempt from wearing a mask if you physically cannot put one on, Where one, take one off.

You are exempt if physically putting on a mask, Wearing one or taking 1 off causes Severe distress.

"Nobody is actually medically exempt.

There are very few conditions that would physically stop somebody from wearing a mask and too many people have used asthmas and excuse.

The government is very clear that you are exempt from wearing a mask if you physically cannot put one on, Where one, take one off.

When you said can't or won't? and then said how you can do it. I'd would say that is pretty judgmental.

"Any company can legally refuse entry to a person without a face mask .

Businesses are not public places therefore the public are there by invitation only ...any company can revoke the invitation.refusing to leave is trespass ..take anything with you is burglary ...

You may find that a person with a genuine reason for not wearing a mask may be able to use the disabilities act against the store

Shops are not challenging people for this very reason and rightly so.

It's against the act to question someone about a disability

Police now have said people need to have a printed off exemption sheet from a doctor and they have a certain amount of time to produce it or be fined.

They said in the news today that people would say they were exempt and all the could do was let them carry on .

It don't say that on .gov website

It was in itv news earlier I think. However I could only find one article online

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.thesun.co.uk/news/13674843/cops-fine-brits-first-time-without-mask-lockdown/amp/

Thank you

Still don't say it on the .gov website and thats what people need to follow "

My understanding is this is specifically for London or area covered by the metropolitan police. The full police statement linked, I’m not sure where the newspaper read from that a doctors exemption will be required to be produced, but DO expect to be questioned more if you are out and about for various reasons, why out, where do you live, is this your household, why no mask and it’s about time.

"If they cannot breathe through a mask then they shouldn't be out in public.

It is quite easy to breathe through a mask, so make in mandatory, just do it, have some respect for me and if you find it difficult, stay at home!

I have said this till I am blue in the face. There are multiple reasons why someone can't wear a face covering, Autism, mental health conditions and learning disabilities being a few.

So why do you have some respect and Educate yourself on the type of people that are truly exempt before making such judgmental comments.

Cant or wont

I'm medically exempt but willingly wear a mask . Its uncomfortable for me but for 30 in the supermarket it's a must .

Well congratulations that you are able to wear one but many others aren't as fortunate please stop being so judgmental. Would you like to tell a young adult with severe autism or learning difficulties that they are not allowed to leave the house because you can wear a mask so why shouldn't they. "

The OP was about wearing face coverings in supermarkets.

I did not comment on whether people were allowed to leave the house or not !

Priti Patel was quite clear about this when she was interviewed on BBC breakfast this morning.

The police will use their judgement but people are not required to carry proof with them.

So many opinions on this subject maybe it's time we all did click and collect once aweek and collect from the car park, that will help protect the valuable shop workers.

You don’t need to drive to do click and collect

At the end of the day it’s about reducing risks, everyone makes their own choices. Personally I’d rather shop for fresh stuff with hardly anyone around if I have to go, so I go very late at night 23.00 onwards or first thing 06.00) it’s blissful as normally only 1 or 2 others around. Everything else is either click & collect or delivery via prime.

So many privileged people that live close or walking distance to a supermarket, That are able-bodied. Considering the most vulnerable are over 80 or disabled you really want them to be going out at 11 o'clock at night Just except some people cannot wear a mask and cannot do online shopping.

I wouldn’t get too hung up about someone not wearing a mask in a supermarket. It’s no biggie. It’s out there all over the place.

Us mask wearers fiddle with them, itch, take them off and on, shove them in pockets, don’t wash them enough, then infect most things we touch. That then gets touched, then hand to mouth , simple cross contamination. A friend of mine pointed it out to me how manny Millions of people doing that.

Makes sense as the countries with bigger mask legislation are pretty much having the same problems.

And I'm pissed off that some people don't understand why some others can't wear a mask it is not about respect it is about compassion and understanding which so many more people should try and get a little bit more of.

I'm one of those people / medically exempt ,

I'm gasping by the time i have finished my shop.I have had panic attacks but if i dont go out for essentials no one will do it for me . So understand my situation too and dont judge me .

The hard facts are that there are people that dont wear masks because they think they are above wearing one. Sadly the ones who genuinely cannot wear one are going to get tarred with the same brush because of the selfish twats.

We can argue all day, week,months...but it will always be an emotional issue which ever the side of the fence your on.

Did I say that, no ! I said ‘personally’ as I would rather not be in a supermarket with those that choose not to wear masks

I say choose, as I various family members and friends that are exempt from wearing masks, but they have chosen to try. Training themselves at home by wearing it for small amounts of time and building up until they felt comfortable going out and wearing it.
