By the rumours circulating it sounds as if they are waiting for the warmer weather to arrive before easing anything.

After 13th Jan I can see more areas being pulled into Tier 4.

I think a lot will depend on how the whole school debacle is managed next week. If schools go back the new variant will kick our arses until the vaccine creates herd immunity .....

Tier 4 is pointless if schools are open

We did that in November and the numbers still kept going up.

If you read any epidemiology paper it will tell you that any lockdown or equivalent will allow the virus to mutate whilst it’s in artificial environment - i.e. in a warm house with doors snd windows shut.

You see, our great SAGE scientists won’t tell you that because it destroys their lockdown mantra, which is all this government has to stem the tide as they fooked up over the summer with test and trace amongst other things.

Read the WHO papers on their website about lockdowns and they categorically state that lockdowns don’t work, but don’t worry Johnson, Gove and Hancock are following the science !

Nothing happened in November because schools were open - it’s not rocket science

As long as the schools are open lockdown will not work close the schools and the unis and dont have the students back.

the students dont need to be in uni to study in the first lockdown it was all online, the issue with them is the mixing outside the classroom even with the pubs shut the ones round here are still meeting, partying and mixing.

Maybe share some of these papers rather than just saying that they are there if you want to get a point across. I know fab ban some links but surely not WHO???

The following article was updated 2 days ago so I am considering it the acurate...

"What is WHO’s position on ‘lockdowns’ as a way of fighting COVID-19?

Large scale physical distancing measures and movement restrictions, often referred to as ‘lockdowns’, can slow COVID-19 transmission by limiting contact between people.

However, these measures can have a profound negative impact on individuals, communities, and societies by bringing social and economic life to a near stop. Such measures disproportionately affect disadvantaged groups, including people in poverty, migrants, internally displaced people and refugees, who most often live in overcrowded and under resourced settings, and depend on daily labour for subsistence.

WHO recognizes that at certain points, some countries have had no choice but to issue stay-at-home orders and other measures, to buy time.

Governments must make the most of the extra time granted by ‘lockdown’ measures by doing all they can to build their capacities to detect, isolate, test and care for all cases; trace and quarantine all contacts; engage, empower and enable populations to drive the societal response and more.

WHO is hopeful that countries will use targeted interventions where and when needed, based on the local situation."

Like others, I see 4 being the norm. Possibly tighter or Lockdown in parts, because of the holiday mixing, at some point in January.

This new variant is a bugger that's going to drive us being restricted for longer

End of Feb before our vaccines start to influence new infection numbers downwards at a guess.

A lot rides on the cumulative effects of stricter measures underway or to come

Couple of months? Try all this year. At two million jabs a week (times 2 cos it's a 2 jab vaccination for max effectiveness) it's going to be Sept or Oct before enough people have been done to allow the remaining (or refusals) to be safe AND not let the healthcare system collapse.

It's a long haul, but there is a chink of light ahead in this dark tunnel.

I reckon until the end of March at best. That’s if we don’t go into a full lockdown between now and then which I suspect we will

Not sure closing schools helps, the kids just congregate elsewhere and that ‘elsewhere’ they are not social distancing or wearing masks, a small local town close to us which is only a quiet area the police have put on an social media they will be patrolling looking for kids and asking groups of more than two to disperse and have asked parents to know where their kids are or risk being fined, so unless there’s control over what the kids do they may as well be in school. Saw it for myself about a dozen kids by a bank because it was undercover on a rainy day, aged probably 10 to 15 with music playing at a deafening sound, littering and larking about. That’s the thing with all having phones they all message someone to meet up and before you know it there’s the full class grouped together so if they are shutting schools they need to enforce the kids staying home, sorry if that offends but pretty sick of this mess now.

"the students dont need to be in uni to study in the first lockdown it was all online, the issue with them is the mixing outside the classroom even with the pubs shut the ones round here are still meeting, partying and mixing. "

True for some courses, however a lot of degrees require an element of assessed practical work that has to be done on site (vet/medical students cannot practice or demonstrate procedures at home via Zoom, for example). Lockdown 1 wasn't too bad as these elements were deferred to another year etc, but it's just not possible for a lot of these courses to be totally online.

And yes some students were silly, but only a small proportion of them. Classic minority ruining it for everyone else. I'd argue more people on this site are meeting against the rules than students partying....

It looks like tougher measures are on the way according to Boris this morning so that probably either another Tier level (5) or a National Lockdown.

In my own area (Kent) Boris says

“ that there has been a "stubborn" epidemic in Kent and parts of London due to the new fast-spreading virus variant.

He says people have questioned what it is all about - amid suggestions that people there are not sticking to the rules.

But this may not be accurate, he says, with another potential explanation behind the rise.”

How about the fact that towns like whitstable and Herne Bay are packed with DFL’s and others from outside the area.

How is this known?

Cars in car parks have been checked and the overwhelming majority are registered to people from outside the area however there is no distance given on how far you can travel for a bit of fresh air or a walk by the seaside.

I cannot think of anywhere in this country where you are not within reach of a public space that is 20 miles or more from your home.

There needs to be a travel limit.

This ... a lull in the summer and another wave in the autumn.

I can see tier 5 coming in till Easter and then an easing during summer. But restrictions all year to some degree.
