Royal London - disaster mode

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

For anyone who read my post early this morning sadly it’s just been announced that as a country we have our first hospital operating at a level and approaches reserved for disasters.

Royal London is the largest icu in the U.K. and they have surpassed a care ratio of 3 patients per nurse. Simply put the clinical staff can no longer deliver all the required actions to keep their patients alive. I suspect they are the first of a number to follow suit but it’s quite soul destroying knowing what the days ahead will be like for the staff, patients and families there.

For those thinking pah that just means a few more 80+’s will die... no, it means in the coming weeks a number of admissions might not receive the treatment needed to maintain their lives. Sadly age, gender or race won’t offer any advantage in that scenario.

Lack of staff rather beds, perhaps many staff have decided to self isolate with their family over the Christmas/New Year period.

What a vile comment to make! These people have worked tirelessly all year and I doubt any of them would do a bunk at such a critical time

couple, us we him her.

This is exactly the scenario that the government has been trying to avoid, sadly now it seems that we are on the road to a national crisis.

Yet I guarantee people will STILL be claiming it's all nonsense and posting ridiculous statistics about the age of the dying.

Yet I can 100% guarantee all these people denouncing the pandemic and claiming that their freedom has been curtailed in some elaborate conspiracy will be the first shouting and complaining if they or their loved ones can't get treated from the overwhelmed hospitals.

It's not a case of people saying we told you so and sitting back and looking smug and patting ourselves on the back.

It's exactly the opposite,no one wants this to happen.

I am totally lost as to how many deaths is enough for some people to actually give a crap and start to take notice?

Yet even today a group of activists staging a march in Brighton against the government and the lockdown and restrictions.

I hate to use the word moron's but nothing else seems appropriate!

It is. I have a paramedic friend currently with a patient in their home, been there 3 hours waiting for an ambulance and she’ll stay there until one arrives.

So true. Regardless of anyone's opinion, we can all have a great argument after this is over... Right now we have to stop spreading it. We are the ones spreading it. Stay home. Stay home stay home.

Only today I had something pop up on Facebook that there are supposed to be mass rallies in London & Manchester tonight.

I also saw some footage from a week or two ago when Piers Corbyn held a rally in my local town going on about loss of rights etc. Thankfully not that many people there listening to it

Meanwhile it seems there's plenty of space at Gloucester Royal.....

A woman in the UK was arrested by police after she filmed a video inside an almost completely empty hospital and posted it online, the daily mail calls her an anti lockdown protester who's friends with Jeremy Corbyn's brother you know to make her look like a nut case.

Don't get me wrong the virus is real very real I know this first hand but this has to be explained.

I'm sure the experts on here will be say people are scared to go or the doctors and nurses are treating the covid patients, who knows they probably are. Interesting tho

It would appear she filmed in the outpatients and main atrium area and adjoining corridors. On a Sunday. Even before Covid, you wouldn't find many people in outpatients on a Sunday. Hospitals are closed to all visitors, almost all outpatient clinics are suspended or being run online/over the phone and she wonders why the hospital seemed empty? She presumably didn't gain access to an actual treatment ward, which is where she'd have found the patients and staff. Covid patients have this nasty habit of staying put in their bed for long periods, rather than roaming the corridors.

Apparently she was challenged by staff that she came across for not wearing a mask - she (falsely) claimed exemption. What a paragon of investigate journalism she is...

In the really cold winter of 2016, I called an ambulance because my asthma kicked off ( its usually not life limiting at all. Very mild)

The paramedic told me that alot of the nhs staff were poorly themselves. But had been told they werent allowed to take time off

This woman was clearly unwell. But still working to help people like me

I felt for her

Last winter, our local hospital called a black alert (one above a red alert), due to respiratory illness. My Dad was admitted to hospital with pneumonia on 6th Jan also with pneumonia and the wards were absolutely rammed with lots of people in the same boat. Staff were absolutely overrun, they were treating patients needing admission in consultation rooms (including my Dad for the first 7hrs after he arrived). He was in need of IV antibiotics, oxygen and other treatment but could only be provided with a hard examination couch upon which to lie down/prop up. This was the situation before Covid.

I would suggest reading a bit more about something like that before you decide to post. Apparently innocuous posts can be dangerous - remember that anyone who is not a Fab member can read forum posts (which don't have poster's names included), so your post will come up when Gloucester is searched for (esp. alongside other keywords).

Didn't know that thanks for the heads up, however I've just watched the video again and it can not of been as you suggested before covid and Sunday because in the video she shows that it's Monday and she mentions tier 3. I'm sure that there's definitely more to it than is being led on.

I'm not which post you're referring too at the top of the post. But cheers anyway

1) I didn't say anything about being before Covid

2) She filmed on a Sunday night and posted it online on Monday morning.

I don't mean to be rude, but are you able to think critically?"

Hang on a second I was asking for an opinion I got it back and I thanked you for it you did say before covid so forgive me for quoting you..I see your point on Sunday filming post it Monday.

"Meanwhile it seems there's plenty of space at Gloucester Royal.....

Cheers I was wondering but that would make sense, TBF in my defense I only read one article.

1) I said EVEN BEFORE Covid. Aka, in the era before Covid became an issue, you wouldn't find anyone in outpatients on a Sunday. How is that so hard to read?

2) She filmed on a Sunday night and posted the video on Monday morning.

I don't wish to be rude, but are you capable of critical thinking?

The South

And despite the opening post, it's mere seconds for people to pop along and blame the government.

And lo and behold it's the usual suspects.

People. It's the people who are spreading this, while the government desperately adapt the guidance due to the selfish, ignorant actions of the absolute fuckwits who ignore everything they're told to do.

And meanwhile our wonderful NHS desperately try to keep ahead of the need.

Every government of any party, in every country in the world has a population full of people saying "This government fucked it up, this government are useless, blah blah blah"

When the truth is, they're all trying to deal with a global pandemic for which no-one has any experience of, for which there's no cure, for which we're learning something new every day.

Meanwhile, people keep ignoring the advice, the statistics and the guidelines, whilst moaning about how the Government are screwing it up, cases are rising and the restrictions are tightening.

People and their stinking, selfish, stupid, ignorant attitudes.

Them's the problem.

Love you Charli, you and your colleagues are absolutely, totally and completely, fucking superstars.

To be honest, you could go into any outpatients department on any day of the week at the moment and you'd see the same thing. Because most outpatient clinics aren't open to see physical patients.

"Except the nightingales where purely for show. There was never any way that they could be staffed safely, if at all. "

Actually, the nightingales are effectively field hospitals, you may still see them in use as basic nursing, oxygen and a bed is better than no bed.

The staffing hopes where always floored but I don’t believe they didn’t have the best intentions behind them at a time where we knew virtually nothing about this virus.

And having found the woman on FB, I can see her first video was taken on 27th December (starts from the car park). She took a second video after angry responses on the Monday (starts in a lift).

It's actually hilarious. The second video is her going back to prove there's no-one on the wards. So she goes to the door of a ward and films through the glass and says "I can see staff but no patients". No shit Sherlock. The patients aren't in the central corridor up the ward, they're in the rooms that lead off the corridor. Does she expect to be able to see patients receiving medical care in full view of a glazed door, immediately in front of the lifts?

The fact anyone could watch more than 3 seconds of it and not question her intelligence is astounding and really reinforces my belief that this country has a serious shortage of brain cells to go around.

Assume for a moment you're right. And assume that we've been told day after day after day for 9 months to stop spreading the virus. There's one thing which we can Control. And that is whether we choose to spread the infection. Or whether we try not to. We have control over that. We all know the nhs has finite resources. We all have brains in our heads. We really need to stop blaming other people for what we are doing to eachother. Nobody is forcing us to do that.

I’m not convinced it’s a baseless accusation to be honest. They struggle to recruit enough people into the NHS as it is - is it wild to suggest that the government built the nightingales as a knee jerk reaction to the virus without considering the actual logistics of staffing them?

The solution is there are not enough staff in the NHS, that's pre covid fact..

They were possibly a good idea from a let's look proactive like China and it's a bit of a morale boost etc to the public but there never was enough people to staff them in April and there's less now..

Even though we are in lockdown and have now moved to tier 4 people aren’t doing what they should and staying at home, I work in food retail and if someone can tell me why 6 people need to go into a shop to buy 2 pasties? Even working today with reduced trading hours we still took as much as we would before any lockdown!! People sitting around the town centre drinking coffee on benches, queuing to get into the food hall in M & S and most retailers having to have staff on the front doors for crowd control now that’s why it’s rising

The Nightingale hospitals are on 72hr readiness, how they will be used has been a topic of discussion since they started, but staffing is an issue part of the intention was for retired or staff who had left the service to return and be fast tracked to get their pins back, that surge hasn’t happens, it shouldn’t have been a surprise that people who have left largely because of poor pay and T&C’s left for a reason and don’t want to come back, I understand that the nightingales will come on stream if needed but will effectively be for basic support though to recover for less complex cases or palliative. In the last week we have seen at my works a rise of around 50 inpatients so well over another ward and a half, when you think that most hospitals add another winter pressures ward into service for winter and those people are also being treated and the issue with hospital acquired Covid it all adds up to not a great time.

It would be nice if the keyboard warriors and arsehole press realised what life is actually like in a hospital right now, instead of point scoring.

Mrs Stort (a nurse at a hospital that has lost two members of staff to COVID) has been working all through the holidays, finishing a run of nights this morning. Late this afternoon she got a text from work pleading with her to work tonight because of the number of admissions and lack of staff due to isolating or suffering from the virus.

Meanwhile, two houses in our part of the road that we live in have people round for parties, while two others have gone away, even though we’re tier four and not supposed to be travelling. Still, they did stand outside every Thursday banging their saucepans and they’re young and not going to get ill, are they?

Cheers I was wondering but that would make sense, TBF in my defense I only read one article.

But this is the problem. It took me two minutes to read around and find that info. The post you've written towards the top of the thread will catch the attention of the anti-Covid crowd, who won't bother scrolling down for any replies and who will seize upon the post as fuel for the fire of their conspiracy.

1) I said EVEN BEFORE Covid. Aka, in the era before Covid became an issue, you wouldn't find anyone in outpatients on a Sunday. How is that so hard to read?

2) She filmed on a Sunday night and posted the video on Monday morning.

I don't wish to be rude, but are you capable of critical thinking?"

Bit rude

I'd suggest every country in the world was massively unprepared for this, regardless of whether their healthcare was underfunded or not.

90% of the country is supposed to be in lockdown. 100% of the country isn't observing lockdown, social distancing, wearing masks, or even washing their bloody hands. What don't you get about it?

The government is responsible for imposing the lockdown and guideance. We the people are responsible for not following the guidelines.

To constantly blame the government when it's the people who are not following the rules is bloody stupid.

You're a Labour man, so let's swap it around. The Labour party are in power, the conservatives are in opposition.

The country is in exactly the same position we are in today.

How many of your posts would be anti labour?

"Lack of staff rather beds, perhaps many staff have decided to self isolate with their family over the Christmas/New Year period."

I have seen a number of replies to this comment, mostly using words like ‘vile’ and ‘nasty.’ When the hell did people start thinking it is okay to demonise people for having a contradictory opinion? That’s a slippery slope, and in its extremes throughout recent history, has killed many, many more people than Covid has.

This poster’s point of view is extremely cynical, but valid. Our local hospital has had a huge downturn in staff between Christmas and New Year, inconsistent with local infection rates, keeping in mind that when we talk about ‘the NHS’ it is not just front line nurses. There are janitors, office workers, supply chain managers, logistics personnel, administrators. These people are human, and as with any walk of life some may use the circumstances to their advantage. As another example, one of our nearby neighbours, who is a carer in the NHS, and has been to and from work, had her busy house party interrupted by police last night, who I’m sure could have been attending more important things.

Before anybody wants to personally attack me for this view, and I’m a big girl (literally) so I can take it, understand that my mum is a senior nurse in the NHS and contracted Covid at work from a patient and almost died this year. My 2 aunts are both senior and mid level midwives. My mother in law is a frontline care worker who also contracted Covid, and has had to self isolate, unpaid, many times, and we have friends in every emergency service. Even my dad, who is frail, has volunteered to Marshall parking at a vaccine centre. They are all exhausted. As are many.

I am human. I read Candi’s post about Manchester yesterday, and cried (like I suspected many did). I thank all those people from the bottom of my heart for doing the things that they are. Does that mean that everybody in the NHS is a Saint? Sadly, no it doesn’t; there will always be a bad minority as with all walks of life, and those who are affected by them, who might think differently to you.

Great support for all of us NHS staff there - what a crass statement to make!

In actual fact those off in isolation are are prob off because of others that don't follow guidance not because they choose too ( & the guilt because you're not there with your colleagues is massive) The rest of us then plug the staffing gaps which is why we are literally on our knees - 10 months in & we continue to fight for our fellow humans.

8 years of austerity had a massive impact..there can be little doubt about that.We were massively under prepared.

As for people being solely responsible..I don't get why cases are rocketing..when 90%of the country is in lockdown.

I'll.be honest I rarely see anyone without a mask in a shop and never in big groups

You’re not in Burnley though where it’s under their chin, in their hand, or even better they’re exempt cos they’ve got asthma, it’s an absolute joke and on the news every damn night as cases just keep rising, I’ll be mass testing within 2 weeks so we’ll see an even bigger increase in cases

True but most places only have 5 fingers.

If they've got asthma, they could well be exempt plus a lot of exemptions are unseen"

If someone considers themselves to be exempt from wearing a mask as they have a respiratory disease, then surely, that is even more of a reason to wear one so they don't get any extra complications ??? and anyway ... those ridiculous landyards with flowers on that say you're exempt ... they're 3 quid each on ebay .... anyone can buy one

Every government will have made mistakes, regardless of their politics. All the parties have had staff who think they know better.

It really is a case of people thinking they know better unfortunately. We’re living in T4, C is NHS, working herself to the bone with others and yes, the hospitals are at breaking point.

But ignoring expert advice at this moment will drive them over the edge. We simply can’t sustain this.

The one saving grace was the single day for Christmas rather than five. But still, some people (people we know) ignored it.

Exactly

So many people seem to have no clue what a genuine emergency actually is

So many could manage their injuries or conditions either at home themselves, or by utilising a local pharmacy, G.P or minor injuries unit

A and E really should be kept for the most serious, life threatening accidents and emergencies

My mum was bluelighted to hospital this morning by a crew who were under huge stress. This is the second time in two weeks. Her experience has been awful due to the conditions in the hospital and the stresses the staff are working under. When she was in just before Christmas the only place they could find to put her was on a reclining chair in a side room.

Were it so clear cut....

So many issues raised in this thread. It is complicated, but I'm afraid the Government are ultimately responsible.

Whichever way you read it, the NHS, year in year out reaches breaking point during this time of year.

Maybe the solution in the future is to have a 'Flu' lockdown to try and reduce the average number of Flu deaths (around 15000 year)?

This is of course on a different scale. The government has now been spending money on an unprecedented scale for some time. We have Nightingale hospitals that have been erected and then taken down again in some cases. Have we ever had enough staff to man these?

And who's fault is it that Covid is spreading so rapidly? Is it really that simple to blame everyone else?

Should I be going to work on Monday. I'm self employed. Not had any financial support through the pandemic. Can't work from home. Not had the 'government' paying me 80% to sit around on furlough. No business grants, no loans. Still have rent to pay, bills to pay and rates for council services which are not being provided in many cases.

What is your advice. Should I go to work on Monday?

It seems we are only capable of seeing extremes on either sides of the argument at times.

Either way, it does seem to me that ultimately it is government that dictates policy.

I don't for a moment think it's all easy decisions, but it does seem this government have blundered from one positiin to another with very little direction, the only real consideration being public opinion, and in the blind hope that someone else (ostensibly the Scientists, NHS and Care workers) will dig them out.

Lets hope that happens soon for all our sakes.

"Except the nightingales where purely for show. There was never any way that they could be staffed safely, if at all.

And you know this how? Why don't you try and offer a solution rather than just throwing baseless accusations around.?

Maybe do your homework before you comment then.

Any staff expected to transfer a patient was then expected to stay with them there.

Also the legal levels of care where completely thrown out the window.

"

As someone who started off working his pandemic in the Manchester Nightingale I can assure you that is completely false.

We where under staffed but had dedicated staff, nobody transferring patients was told to stay with their patient. We completed transfer orders and took over their care.

We where also under the charge of University of Manchester NHS trust and as such where audited to the same levels as the trust. We had to comply with every regulation any trust in the U.K. operates. The entire reason for such limited wards in use across the nightingale network was due to failing to meet legal criteria to have more open.

As for people being solely responsible..I don't get why cases are rocketing..when 90%of the country is in lockdown.

Back to the OP, bravo the NHS, who are doing their very best in the face of huge adversity.

E

"

If the labour party had imposed 8 years of austerity I'd say exactly the same thing.

Quite how you cut services to the bone and then be surprised when we struggle to cope,is quite bewildering.

People take responsibility for their own actions, and I dont see anyone blaming the gmnt completely, but if anyone thinks this whole mess has been handled well, they need their heads testing.

There were teachers on the radio yesterday saying the instructions they were getting were contradictory and unfeasible.

And other countries have handled it much better than us.

That's a fact.

"Someone drove round colchester hospital as well ,A/E was empty, no ambulances queuing back to back and even the corridors were empty..."

I love posts like this... who is someone? What insight do they have into changes to hospital policy during this pandemic? What exactly does drive around entail?

We currently have a practically empty atrium in our trust... the seating area is limited, the Costa and subway are closed as they are effectively eat in establishments. Reception is replaced with a touchscreen reception which directs patients straight to their department to limit infection risk.

Our icu now occupies 6 times it’s usual space due to patient numbers but also the additional distance needed between beds to try to limit viral load. We avoid bringing covid patients through the usual ambulance drop off for a number of reasons: the patient requires the entire team in hard PPE so it saves the ED team from having to Don, they will have to sanitised the interior post drop so we don’t want them blocking the bay.

If you want a true picture of a covid hospital, you need to come inside the red zone... if you aren’t in there, you might as well be doing football commentary from outside the stadium.

"If only the NHS wasnt vastly underfunded.

Assume for a moment you're right.

Assume? I don't think I need to assume that.

8 years of austerity had a massive impact..there can be little doubt about that.We were massively under prepared.

As for people being solely responsible..I don't get why cases are rocketing..when 90%of the country is in lockdown.

If they've got asthma, they could well be exempt plus a lot of exemptions are unseen

"

Once upon a time, they were not ridiculous. They were used by people with hidden disabilities so they could be prioritised at places like airport security. For example, a child with autism who might find waiting in a long queue difficult. They were very useful for things like that. Now they've been utterly devalued by the wankers who buy/sell them on eBay.

"My mum was bluelighted to hospital this morning by a crew who were under huge stress. This is the second time in two weeks. Her experience has been awful due to the conditions in the hospital and the stresses the staff are working under. When she was in just before Christmas the only place they could find to put her was on a reclining chair in a side room.

It saddens me to see people say that hospitals are empty."

Fingers crossed for you, worrying times..

But you are aware that the masks don't actually protect anyone from getting it?

"And despite the opening post, it's mere seconds for people to pop along and blame the government.

What is obvious in hindsight? That the government aren’t blameless? Can you explain your point please? "

Sage advised a short firebreak in September, Boris ignored it and we had to have four weeks as the numbers dragged his ears open to the scientific advice..

This has been common throughout, the dithering and unwillingness to take hard decisions in time when needed only to be playing catch up with a virus that naturally thrives in such circumstances..

"The poster you're defending has been a persistent covid denier since the outbreak began. Masks, lockdowns, testing......they have questioned them all. They have consistently offered what I can only call 'alternative facts' with regard to coronavirus. This latest theory he has offered is just another attempt to diminish the gravity of the current situation.

If that’s true, which I don’t know, I would either attempt to engage with and educate them or ignore/report them for being deliberately inflammatory.

People who dismiss and/or become abusive in response don’t look any better in that situation."

The government is responsible for imposing the lockdown and guideance. We the people are responsible for not following the guidelines.

To constantly blame the government when it's the people who are not following the rules is bloody stupid.

Well let’s be clear on this FP3 masks will when used correctly, the use of Fluid resistant surgical masks ‘FRSM’ will reduce the risk if they are used correctly not my use of correctly, the so called “face coverings” that some use are a joke, no form of infection control procedure at all at the most they might reduce the risk of people spreading it to others.

Non clinical masks are designed entirely to reduce risk of spreading the virus... sneezes, coughs, breathing etc all disperse significantly less particles if even a simple cotton barrier is in place...

It’s a % reduction... to borrow “team sky” thinking, it’s marginal gains which when applied across the population has the opportunity to make a significant difference.

The entire reason for wanting everybody to wear one when in public places is to prevent them spreading their germs to others.

Let's be clear here, i personally do not give a flying fuck if you catch covid, if you want to cough your lungs up and die, that's your choice. What i do very much care about is that i don't want your stinking germs spreading everywhere you go.

There are now, and have been for months, hundreds of people dying in agony every day because of a horrendous disease. Even if you don't give a shit about people, maybe you should care that the spread of this has paralysed the country and cost hundreds of billions of pounds to the economy, money that you will be paying back for the rest of your life.

Anybody that cannot even make the token effort to wear a bit of cloth over their face when they are in a supermarket, but instead makes specious arguments about the exact percentage of their efficiency, should not be allowed out in a public place.

Nobody is perfect, most people make minor mistakes, but at least they are trying to do their bit. Those who deliberately look for loopholes in the rules, who are actively refusing any responsibility towards their fellow people - fuck them, fuck them sideways, fuck them into the sea.

Yes but a little more attention to following the right procedures wouldn’t go amis, simple things like not crossing the straps with FRSM’s which appears to have become a thing, but makes the sides of the mask gape, I am getting fed up with pulling staff up for things like that.... I should say I work closely with IPC and it’s amazes me how people don’t get the basics. As for the public.... simply they don’t get in unless they have one of our FRSM and sanitised with 24 hr security at all entrances preventing access unless with an appointment, there is a flip side, something I never want to see of relatives at the door of the hospital not allowed in on a phone sharing the last moments with loved ones distressed and in tears, that is hard on staff as well, but no one cares anymore, talk to our porters who have to deal with the volume of deaths, I work in a hospital dating from the 1880’s and we have had the highest daily death rates ever recorded including as a work house, and two world wars. Sobering isn’t it.

I only see my team but we are pretty flawless with all our PPE, if your staff are crossing the ear supports because the masks are too small perhaps enlist the help of some old dears to knit some button bands... they help no end.

I’m surprised you aren’t letting relatives in for the final moments, I didn’t think any trust was still doing that tbh

Sadly you can’t let a whole family in, I’ve never seen a FRSM as anything other than one size not likes a FFP3 face fitted

Every mask that's been provided to me when attending hospital appointments in this pandemic have been universally useless. Far too big for my face and impossible to create a seal over my nose with the wire. Obviously I wore what I was given, but it had more gaps at the sides and bridge of the nose than a bombed out building. One size fits all (if you're a bloke with a broad face).

"And despite the opening post, it's mere seconds for people to pop along and blame the government.

E

Totally agree

The government is fighting a losing battle if the minority keep whining about their civil liberties beijg taken away, and doing as they damn well please

I’m not saying that people aren’t to blame - but the government are not blameless by any stretch of the imagination.

That's obvious in hindsight

What is obvious in hindsight? That the government aren’t blameless? Can you explain your point please?

Nobody can say what they should do without the benefits of hindsight. They were led, in the main by the scientists, so blame them if anything was wrong

They often ignore the scientists..despite what they say."

The government decided to ‘follow its own path’ by going down the herd immunity route instead of following WHO advice and learning from other countries. I am not exactly relying on hindsight with this, this was widely reported at the time.

It’s the heads that differ in size from my experience.

I’m amazed you get family liaison officers to link with ventilated patients. We will try and get any direct link relatives in, wives, husbands, children etc... it’s very limited time but placing or holding a hand is pretty important in my view. We ‘may’ have done that in certain cases even before it was allowed.

It's been the situation for years. I was a health & social care manager in charge of a hospital discharge and rapid response team. The Winter crisis started about the end of September. The attitude was get them out, get them out. This increased with closure of community hospital beds. I couldn't stand it in the end.

All this crap about save the nhs !! It's been underfunded and damaged for years.

Have you not considered that by constantly reporting how bad the situation with the NHS is, the pitch for privatising it will appeal to many, many more people when it comes around...a bit like telling folk how bad it was being in the EU.

Agreed. The NHS manages to do the job it does because of the dedication of its staff, not as a result of government support.

Will it really? Do people really believe private health care is the way forward? You only have to look at the US to see how many people fall between the cracks under that system. Obamacare?

But you are right in that it's a massive political hot potato.

For years we have been told tax cuts are the way forward...and they've won the vote. You get what you pay for.

Sadly I suspect spending and government borrowing relating to Covid will make austerity look like the good times for some years to come, meaning there will be a dearth of government money for a long time.

I find it interesting whenever it comes to health and spending that lots of untruths are pushed and believed. Take a look at the facts about spending on the nhs. I'm not suggesting it's well funded or pooy funded. But it is funded and its funded a lot.

When it comes to private health care.... People kneejerk and say but America is shut. Firstly is it? Have you experience of it or just trotting out second hand lazy stereotypes. Secondly, nobody at any point has said America is the model we should aspire to. However many EU countries have good health systems and they are provided privately and paid for privately. Ask someone in the UK to pay an additional 2k in tax for the nhs and most will run for the his. But give them and annual 2k bill for their bupa subscription and they are OK with it.

Our health and our NHS are important. But we can only really have a reasonable debate if we use facts rather than politicised tagines, some of which are patently incorrect.
