OK, a virus thread with a difference please. Positive. Solutions. Suggestions to make it better. We moan a lot about how crap other people are and policies. So let's have some ideas of how we can wake this gimp up and make 2021 better than 2020.

Now as a thought provoker...we test 500k per day and 90% are negative. In 10 days that's 5m.. In a month 15m tests.... 13.5m are negative. Can't we find a way to get the 13.5m testing negative out of restrictions?

Try and keep it positive

Ensure everyone who has tested negative wears a tag of the type worn by offenders. Anyone without one must stay inside their home. Everyone with one may continue their lives with pre covid freedoms.

testing negative today does not mean you are not positive tomorrow. Test, test, test - wait till the vaccine rolls out though - if 55 million people need it and they do one million vaccines a week (that's two million jabs a week after week two or three), then it will take over a year to vaccinate everyone sensible enough to be vaccinated. Expect restrictions for at least that period of time.

There are several issues. Firstly, there is a delay in testing. You can take a test now and put it in the post. By the time you get back from the post box, you could have touched something or someone and collected the virus. The test comes back negative tommorow but you have been infected.

Secondly you would need to ensure that there is no mingling of those who tested negative with those who haven't been tested.

Another issue is how do you isolate the infected ones from the others. Newzealand posed the idea of moving anyone who tests positive into a secure hotel until they're clean, but this was likened to "Nazi Internment camps".

You also have the issue of ensuring that none of the "key workers" that need to deal with those infected get contaminated themselves.

On top of all that, you have to some how deal with all the people who refuse to stick to the rules because they believe it's all a conspiracy to enslave them.

It "could" be done, but we've seen how good our government have been so far, do you think they're upto a much more complicated task like this?

Just how inaccurate do you believe tests to be, what is the false positive rate? I know care workers who have been tested weekly all year. From 100 tests between them there has been 1 false positive proves negative on a retest. Yes there are false positives but from a daily 30,000 positives less than 500 are false positives I am sure.

We've pretty much all got "wearable tags" haven't we? In our mobile phones... I wonder if there's some kind of app that can help. Technology can tell us all kinds of useless crap.... Hopefully it can tell us something useful to enable a level of normality... Techies?

You think we can get to 400,000 a day on a five day week.

There has to be some sort of way to let negative people do more but the positive don't know they are positive. So we would need much more testing.

i think once we have enough stock of the vaccine and the personnel to do the injections/ observations we should 100% cut back testing to focus on vaccinations , it means test sites can be repurposed as vaccination sites, student nurses who are helping at test sites can be used at vaccine sites instead etc etc

i know testing is important but its monitoring, the vaccine is prevention... testing can be picked back up again following a push for vaccines and at that point you would hope he tearing is really just proving to us the vaccines worked and numbers are now way down

Testing negative today may mean you are positive and presymptomatic or will become asymptomatic, once it's fully infected you.

Many of the tests are sent in the post, so don't involve lots of physical work, except in for lab.

We need to isolate the infected as quickly as possible after their infection, which means that we should pay them, for our benefit, to stay away from others.

Off the top of my head, a tech solution would be not to rely on just handsets.

Use the networks to triangulate locations of handsets and then use the handsets themselves to do the last bit - proximity and duration.

Throw some AI into the equation to differentiate false positives (like sat in a car in traffic or being less than 2m away but in two different buildings).

Get the handset OS manufacturers to design the software and don't let any government employee anywhere near the design or implementation phase.

One tech drawback is that the accuracy in towns and cities would be far higher than rural and suburban areas.

Probably not ideal as this is a 'back of a fag packet' idea, but as what we have as a 'world leading' product is absolutely awful....

Have a centralised set of covid data and publish it for all to see.

The government has put together the SAGE group so they should put together a similar group of sceptics who are trained in specializations related to Covid.

Every week they should have a debate streamed online.

Government should use the debate to inform their decisions.

What about evaluating a persons immune status so people who look after themselves well and feel healthy have some reassurance that they have a pretty robust immune system... just knowing this is surely better than being made to live in fear of one another?

I'm not saying this is a protective measure but it's surely a proactive one?

I would happily take immune system profiling over shoddy covid testing any day

Anyone still sceptical about the existence of this pandemic is not bright enough to offer any useful light on the subject... debating different points of view regards the best way through is a different matter. I don’t believe there is a right way only a least wrong way!

This sounds grate can i have my T cells tested at the same time.

Will people stop propagating this bollox! What is the false positive rate of PCR test? I will keep repeating myself. I know people who are tested weekly, between them they have had over 100 tests and only 1 positive result. Explain why recently we are seeing nearly twice as many positives from a similar number of tests. If you believe there is a high proportion of false positives in the test results you are very very mistaken.

I would keep shopping to 1 person from any household maximum. As the new variant is much more infectious, having a group of people, if 1 is infected, they likely all will be. Several people together will release a substantial volume of the virus, which will be densely associated around them. It may take just a few minutes to acquire enough of the virus to infect someone. As we get to to move restrictive tiers, the social congregation and virus exchange will be largely in shops.

We should put some emphasis on things like ventilation. Social distancing is good but if everyone breathes that same air then chances of infection increases.

Open windows to allow good circulation. In commercial buildings, proper filters should be installed. When in public transport, open the windows.

I would support them being able to continue to shop with support companions.

Initially shops were encouraging people to shop alone where possible but the current trend has been for groups to shop together, which may now be bringing increased risks, due to the increased infectivity of the new variant.
