We have been told that there will be no Christmas tree or Xmas decorations this year in the dementia unit i work in due to the virus. Any other care workers been told the same?.

That's a shame. Surely a small plastic, pre-lit tree on an out of reach surface could be allowed? Seems very unnecessary. Sorry I can't comment further as I don't work in care, but I can say our college, which has gone to the n-th degree to be Covid secure, has put up the usual tree with all the trimmings.

We have been told it will be outside tree and lights only this year. I thought high up decorations inside would be ok but was told no. Just feel so sad for our residents who may not be here next year.

At a push I could see the reason for not having the tree but think the lights might be a bit overkill.

Maybe you could look into getting some of those multi colour LED strips instead, they might be pretty easy to clean?

I’ve just turned my outside Xmas lights on and it instantly makes me happy to see them

I am sure the staff will decorate our outside space well but it will not feel the same without our usual decorations and our trees up inside.

I don't understand, what is their reasoning? Do lots of people usually touch the decorations on a daily basis?

That’s such a shame, difficult to understand the reasoning for it

Even lights don't need to be turned on/off manually, they can be set on timers to come on and go off......

Surely some simple decorations would be ok. I don't get why they've said no tbh.

Not sure the reason why myself to be honest all i know is that we have had to abide by very strict rules throughout the pandemic and so far remained virus free which can only be good.

Yes, definitely. You'd think that a tree tucked in a corner, decorated by one person would be safe enough!

This seems like grandstanding to show that this is so serious Christmas is cancelled.

I'm sad to hear this when a self contained tree and lights, even if small, could have been used to brighten lives

We’re allowed some, but only hanging ones that can’t be touched I think.

It is all to do with infection control and surface cleaning. Decorations can't be cleaned properly and therefore may carry infection.

I work in a GP surgery and same rules there. We can't put any decorations in the office space either.

Nothing has been said officially at the day centre where I work. But as we have to clean every hard surface at the beginning and at the end of the day, plus extra lunchtime cleaning, it's obvious that Christmas trees won't be allowed. Probably only some wall and/or window decorations that can be easily cleaned.

Although not in elderly care, my office have said no to decorating this year too. Even though we use the almost dry spray antibac stuff, they've put their foot down. Such a shame, especially as , on a Friday, we all take it in turns to bake a cake to take in and share... that's classed as ok. Bloody cake always seems to win these days!!

This situation does seem to bring out the puritanical control freaks ... Any fun must be cancelled .. show you are abiding by the rules ..

There really is some nonsense being applied.

My trust are allowing a tree for 2 days. I’m planning on laminating card and making a card tree that can be cleaned

Makes no sense, Tesco etc have trees in stores with thousands of people walking past and through.

There must be some wipe clean decorations out there to buy. It's been grim enough for people in care homes.

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Ffs.. this is getting rediculous.

The idiots that are being asked to write the risk assessments and make decisions on what we can and cannot have about is a joke.

They seem to be clueless...

The virus is transferred from

Person to person and it doesn't suddenly jump off of a surface to infect someone just because they got too close.

A daily quick mist with a disinfectant spray will kill any virus on it and any that end up on it subsequently will also be killed.

Just take a look at the sampling that TFL have done across the transport networks, they have not found any infection. This is somewhere with thousands of people touching surfaces every day.

So surely a basic antibacterial regime would be more than sufficient to keep a little touched Christmas decoration virus free.

With people all living inside the same house/ unit it seems a little mad to me. If they can all touch furniture, walls etc Im not sure decorations are that different.

Personally I think that the mood lift to the staff and residents by having decorations up to be a greater argument.

I have family who work in care, they share this sentiment.
