From the land of haribos.

I was listening to the news about it and they interviewed a cabbie, it was quite sad to hear, he said that he was very worried and that he could drive around a whole day and that he would be lucky if he got 3 passengers, could all the lockdowns and restrictions be the end for them? I hope not

surrounded by twinkly lights

Same as airport taxis though.

lots are turning to using their cars for takeaway delivery services as the demand is huge, they need to innovate to survive.

Yes, it is the same for those and the takeaway delivery services, lets hope they all can survive as noone know for sure how many years the restrictions could go on for.

I know a couple of black cabbies, yes it’s bad, not sure it’s worse for them than loads of others.

I do think in London it could have been easily arranged in April for key workers to use black cabs rather than public transport, would have been a nice virtuous circle.

Oh and I’ve had a couple of horrendous dangerous driving experiences in black cabs but that’s another story.

Honestly I won't get into a black cab. They are probably different in the capital but up here they run smelly old bangers, in public areas and park where they want

Seriously seen rear windscreens stuck in with tape and they do not switch their engines off, no matter how long the car is stood. Not yet seen a hybrid or electric one either.

I'll stick to uber always get a new hybrid car and tracking means Google knows where I am but my app also gives driver and reg details, unlike disappearing in the back of a black cab and relying on someone seeing me or CCTV seeing it.

That’s true here, along with designated drivers to/from hospital appointments. The new thing is your household on a tour of the London lights

my hubby is a london black cab driver

work in london had been virtually non existent since feb/march

a little bit better just after we came out of the first lock down but no where near a liveable wage

one day hubby waited 3 hour 45 minutes at paddington and got a fare of £15.60 he had put £15 diesel in then he waited a further 4 hours without another fare

it has been tough but im sure there are many people having similar problems

we got to stick together and hopefully build the economy when we get out of this mess

black cabs in london are only allowed to be used in london for 15 years

they have an mot twice a year as well as a very strict yearly overhaul

they can also be checked over on a daily basis by ltda marshals at various train staion ranks and other check points

if they are not clean or are displaying unregistered stickers they can have a stop put on them

If they had declared ALL of their earnings in the past then they would have been given the financial support that they would have been entitled too.

As such, they many chose the greedy 3 for me and 1 for the tax return approach in the past and are now reeling what they sowed.

Perhaps when they were fiddling the books they should have put some by.

The funny thing is the black cab drivers I know many were pleading poverty throughout the lockdown yet still managed to get away on holiday and quarantine on their return. Many of whom were booking these trips last minute I must add!

The black cabs have milked it for years, any common sense and they would have banked enough to see them through this, and yes , I’m in the the same industry and had four months off and able to survive!

Trying to care about black cabs...unfortunately can't find two fucks.

I've taken cabs throughout the country and abroad, polite and helpful. In my 60 years London black cab drivers? Don't get me started.

Came out of a concert at the South Bank. Sea of black cabs with their lights on. As soon as they saw it was a mainly black crowd those lights went off and they screetched away.

Try getting one of those wankers to take you to south of the river.

Friend and I got into Waterloo after last train, we were delayed coming up from Bournemouth so the rail company booked us taxis.

My friend lived in Slough. He phoned me when he got home, surprised I was still at Waterloo, the drivers didn't want to go to Dulwich.

After several more bad experiences of black cabs: mini cabs for me, cheaper too.

Yeah, I'm petty

Neighbour of mine drives a cab, he said nothing has changed, drops to and from bars and clubs have turned in to drops from one house party to another.

Don’t forget Those that have been self employed for years get the grant

80% of earnings and still able to top up whilst working is something cabbies forget

Has anyone ever met a

Cabbie that’s earnt more than £20

In a day ever ever think about it!!!’

It's a dying trade anyway. Much more efficient and cheaper ways to get taxis now via apps etc. and we aren't far away from self drive vehicles.

Combine the two and and cost will drop even more.

Unfortunately, not all trades last forever. Innovate.

Cabs are expensive and when people are losing work first thing they will do is cut costs.

And as it's been stated by the lady before me many times I've tried to get a cab to be told the don't go south of the river nonsense.

unfortunately nothing stays the same but what people have to realise is that not all black cabs are licensed in the same way, they may look the same but have to follow different rules and regulations set by their local authority.

For instance in london they only have a 15 year life span then they normally get sold abroad or mostly to birmingham or manchester areas.

I can only speak about london as thats where my hubby works but it is terrible when people are refused a journey and he agrees and can honestly say he has never refused a fare in 30 years, although if the fare is going further than 6 miles of charring cross they are allowed to do so.

all i will say in their defence whether it be my hubby or another black cab i feel safe knowing the driver is dab checked has insurance including public liability and his vehicle is road worhty

people have choices thats life

After being charged £194 for a black cab ride from Heathrow to Bromley, and £84 for Heathrow to Fulham ... Never using black cabs again.

Lucky work was footing the bill both times.

Maybe prices like that is why they are dying?

Taiwan used an open-source piece of software called V Taiwan to help then regulate Uber.

The software allowed people to post questions and taxi drivers, passengers and anyone who had an interest could post questions and get involved with the debate about what the government of Taiwan would do with Uber.

We should have the same system in the UK so voters can have more direct input into policies.

With blockchain technology, it is already possible.
