Prior COVID-19 infection offers protection for at least six months

A new study suggests people who have had COVID-19 are highly unlikely to contract the illness again for at least six months.

The study was done as part of a major collaboration between the University of Oxford and Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Foundation Trust.

"Here's hoping in 6 months that news becomes 12 months "

I know, we went from 'don't know' to 'perhaps' then 'no it doesn't' and now '6 months' we can only hope.

Let’s hope so, I’ve just had an antibody test as part of a study by kings college London , I had COVID in feb and a positive antibody test in June (which I paid for) so am interested to see if I still have antibodies

Odd isn't it - things seem to be between 'I hope I've had it, and OMG I hope I don't get it!'

At least 6 month is the positive I take from that.

At least meaning that the least protection.

It doesn't state the most.

The most could be a lifetime

At least

Highly unlikely

These words suggest an answer to a loaded question from a reporter or creative reporting

And 11 months worth of data could hardly be conclusive

Nope: Directly from research between:

AN OXFORD study suggests that individuals who previously had coronavirus are highly unlikely to contract the illness again, for at least six months.

The study is part of a major collaboration between the University of Oxford and Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Foundation Trust

"And 11 months worth of data could hardly be conclusive"

as 11 months is longer than 6 months - it could.

Did you see the study on other coronavirus infections, from the HIV database? (I think it was from the Netherlands) If I understood correctly, coronavirus infections happened every 6-12 months (without symptoms), indicating that viruses of this type have waning immunity.

(Obviously this isn't Covid-19 and it's an argument by analogy)

Boris tested positive but still has to quarantine. Does this mean that a person with antibodies can still transmit the virus ?

"Boris tested positive but still has to quarantine. Does this mean that a person with antibodies can still transmit the virus ?"

No, it means that "the rules" make no allowances for having antibodies. There is also the FACT that there will be people who never develop antibodies... this is the case with any disease.

Wakefield

until covid-19 has been around longer no one has any idea how long immunity would be, there are indications it could be 6 months but no proof. The truth is until numbers of people are re-infected there is no answer only estimates. In addition no one yet knows if a vaccine will offer longer immunity (as some vaccines do) or not. This is one of those waiting games.

I would guess that the projected length of immunity is based on the rate that the antibodies diminish in the body. Obviously this figure is not a constant and will be different for each person. It does stand to reason though that the quicker the vaccines can be rolled out, the greater the impact... if the entire world was vaccinated within 6 months, the virus would be gone.

That is only because they only have 6 months data to go on, they will be able to say more in the future when more data is available
