what side of the footpath?

rochester

so we drive on the left hand side of the road, i've been in supermarkets and shopping centres where we have to walk on the left, so why is that when walking along a path people insist on walking on the right hand side?

This annoys me as well, in the offices there is a walk on the left on the stairs, why people think I'm going to move when they are on the wrong side I just don’t know

So we can now catch covid from walking on the wrong side of a footpath?. I walk in the middle as usually have a dog either side. Where people walk on a path is up to them and the least of my worries just now.

Since covid, some of our towns have markings on the walkways telling you to walk on the right, or left depending on which town you visit. Is it any wonder people end up walking anywhere . I'm with the OP though- keeping to the left feels more natural.

Well for me it feels more natural walking on the right maybe got something to do with being left handed.

On a mooch

For me walking down a pavement if I am facing oncoming traffic I walk kerb side, if I am walking with traffic approaching from behind I will walk on the inside.... basic safety taught as a kid and it has stuck

of course not, but since we are being told to keep our distance it makes sense to keep to our left while others walking in the opposite direction keep to their left too so pass us on the right so there is a gap between us.

Rather than my walk today where i was continuously switching from left to right to avoid other people walking wherever they liked.

i hesitate to say this, but why do people not just use common sense and walk as far from others as possible. I use the tow path on the canal on my way to work, there are walkers, joggers, runners, slow cyclists and fast cyclists, its about giving other people space and they doing the same for you. Or is that too much to ask of people ?

yes that would be common sense but when you get someone cross the road and then walk towards you on the same side so you have to then move to your right to avoid them makes you wonder

my favourite thing about covid is people now keep to a side in train stations ... that was always pretty standard in london but not other cities and missing trains because you couldn’t get around sunday strollers taking up the whole corridor/ stairwell annoyed me to no end

But also if I'm solo and someone is coming the other way, I will move to the road side if the traffic is coming from infront or the far side if its coming from the rear as it's safer for the person near the road to be able to see what the cars are doing.

This works for me unless I have my children with me or am walking with a lass then they are always furthest from the road

In the USA it's standard to walk on the right, so it's struck me as logical to walk on the left here, with vehicles driving on the left. But there just doesn't seem to be any standard system here.

I think it's natural to go with the flow, everyone sensing where others are and are going to, so that we adjust and respect each other, as well as giving space. It's typically just phone glued people who don't care to observe for others.

We drive on the left because of the cavalry, because men were mainly right handed when passing each other on horse back, it was easier to pass on the left so the swords wouldn't catch each other

Walking left/right in TfL land often depends on the station layout and passenger flow (obviously many have been altered for the current situation).

There is an odd reason for the stand on the right - the first escalators had a partition at the end at an angle which came from right to left across the steps so you stepped off towards the left side. As a result, it was decided to have those walking do so on the left as that is where you needed to go to get off anyhow and it would avoid a pile up. This simply stuck even as escalator design changed.

If i see a lady walking towards me, i move to the kerb side or the outside, that way the lady is kept to the inside of the pavement which is safest
