School is where kids learn how to deal and interact with people they wouldn't normally. You cant replicate that at home and it's very hard for parents to teach.

I rely on school to teach my children the things beyond which my knowledge extends. Furthermore I expect their school to reinforce the values I try to instil in them such as personal responsibility, a good work ethic, being good citizens, being part of a community (not just the school community but the wider community). School also provides them with a peer group through which their interactions help ready them for life as an adult in ways which I as a parent cannot. My role in preparing them for adulthood is different. They learn in a practical way about relationships with others, conflict resolution, working as a team amongst many other things.

But as far as careers go, there is only so much I can provide in helping them achieve their dreams. I'm the scaffold that their school builds on

. Very well said. There really are some total planks on here who,to be honest, really don’t warrant someone bothering to put together a coherant response. ????????

I think there are a lot of people around who have no ambition for their children, they just think the kids should work in some low skilled job because they do.

I often wonder if these people would become jealous and resentful of their kids if they were to make something of themselves.

I've never needed long division, log tables or need to know what the capital of Canada is.

Because I do not rely on schools and not one of my parent friends do either.

I compliment their education at my own cost when ever I can daily!. I also spend thousands on taking them abroad and no we don't do 'costa pissed' but we get out in countries, meet real people and do as many experiences as possible.

Yes some parents don't give a hoot but keeping schools open is more important than pubs, gyms, retail, etc because social skills only come from social situations which schools provide.

Peer to peer learning and experiences come from schools.

Extended services are available within school.

The list goes on and on.

Schools are part of the social contract. We educate young people to a certain minimum standard so they can be productive adults.

Putting it on parents means that some children will not meet their potential.

Schools are needed for those kids whose parents can't or won't be involved in their children's education.
