For some having access to a takeaway is also conducive to their mental health.

I think the Gym closure is utter madness considering the other things that are open. I can go and squeeze into all manner of shops but can’t work out in a more open space that takes its Covid policy very seriously.

You spend less time in a takeaway than a gym, and breathe less heavily, with a mask on.

I understand it as about the perceived risk levels of infections being higher for a long stay indoors environment - gym - versus the quick in7out of a takeaway. This is regardless of the health impacts of the activity.

They've focussed on the amount of time people may be indoors with others. Irrespective of shop staff etc who may be around people all day, it's the assumed greater than 15 minutes contract that could happen, perhaps as well as the volume of virus that could be shed in a gym session, compared to picking up a lard salad.

Even if a gym only offered 5 minutes sessions, they would be uninterested in giving them permission to open. They have imposed a total ban on them. It's sad as gyms have generally worked hard to keep people safe and there's no evidence of infections being picked up.

If we were to have a much longer lockdown, I'd hope that flexible arrangements would be made. Exercise is definitely healthy for physical and emotional health

surrounded by twinkly lights

Its just trying to keep people out of indoor places together as much as possible, in a takeaway you are inside for maybe 5 minutes, a gym 30 mins plus.

The transmission infection is thought to take 15 mins of close contact to give enough of a dose to infect you seriously

If you have trouble understanding the reasoning have a google for an article in Nature titled 'Mobility network models of COVID-19 explain inequities and inform reopening'

If you can't be bothered with that, the authors suggest that a few Points of Interest (POI) such as gyms, restaurants and churches are responsible for a high number of infections. They go on to assert that reducing capacity reduces infections. Washington Post has a free article titled 'These venues are high-risk areas for spreading the coronavirus, model suggests'.

They did a survey after part 1 and found the rates were tiny.

Not that it matters now like.

But when things start opening up again they better not be left to the end like last time

A) you can excise at home nothing stopping you

B) best way to catch covid is hang out with large groups of people.

So buy your self a fitness dvd pop to Tesco's and get yourself a salad.

There could be a reason in the title - takeaways. They deliver to your door so are less a risk.

If you want to work out, grab a few bags of sugar, pick a chair up, run up and down stairs or do them all if you are pro-level.

There could be a factor of economic interest too. There are far more restaurants and takeaways than there are gyms in greater numbers of the UK's high street. It means at least some money to pay for everything, it means less people out of work. It has to a certain degree kept taxi drivers with an income and delivery drivers in work if not enabled recruitment - not least the supply chain in general.

Before this pandemic how many people wiped down machines.

A few people will have improved a little when they re-opened, but most haven’t.

Covid-19 stays on hard plastic gym like machines longer than other things so it sadly does make sense.

Exercise is fun. We miss it. But we walk more around the parks of london. Or along the canals.

Use your own body weight exercises at home. Very productive.

That's like comparing apples and oranges!

But my thoughts are 1. Garden Centres are pretty open with part of it being outside. 2. People tend to shop for 30 mins. 3. It's a shop deemed essential by the powers that be so people wear masks. 4. You don't get people breathing heavily in them.

Don't be selfish. Find an alternative.

Gym's abslubtly should be open if b&m and co are open, the word essential is diffrent to everyone.

To some it may that a take away they have every week after a hard weeks work as a treat.

To some like myself working on the front line the gym was and always has been my happy place, the place i forget about my external issues.

I go to the gym for thr benefit of my mental health as much as my physical health.

All studys conducted have shown that from nhs track snd trace the gym economy was the one lowest flagged. My gym was closed after every session for 30 mins and for a deep clean social distancing was in place.

I went to the range yesterday qued to get in " for social distancing capacity" yet inside. I can touch what i want pick it up put it back, in walk down isles less than 2m wide....

You don't really need to do the math as it's not all that complicated. If you are in a store or gym the idea is not to pick something up and put it back, that's just basic cop on. I spent 25 years in gym and I've seen more damage done to people's mental health through social media pressure and the crap supplements people take. My partner and I are both front line workers throughout this shit show and people getting dramatic over gyms being closed is frankly embarrassing. It won't be forever and unless there is a substantial decline in your local covid cases then you are giving other healthcare workers a slap in the face by demanding gyms reopen now

Totally disagree with you on that one im afraid. Gyms have statistically shown via the track and trace app to be well below the required r rate. People use the gym for diffrent reasons, be it mental health, physical health surgical physiotherapy, general physiotherapy, an escape from every day issues, financial or personal.

As i state the term essential if dependent on a certain individuals however, don't forget pre covid the health system was fighting and losing the battle against diabetes and obesity, doctors were looking into prescribing gym memberships for mental health depression and obesity to try and reduce the trend.

If you fail to see why a take away a mcdonalds or a kfc, poundland b&m and other stores of such can be open while a gym is closed then im afraid i feel that you are also slapping the staff in the face who have worked so hard to try snd reverse all of the above mentioned illness, to change the stigma and breakdown barriers for people with certain issues to have the confidence to go to a gym and be empowered to make a positive change

U do the maths

You don't really need to do the math as it's not all that complicated. If you are in a store or gym the idea is not to pick something up and put it back, that's just basic cop on. I spent 25 years in gym and I've seen more damage done to people's mental health through social media pressure and the crap supplements people take. My partner and I are both front line workers throughout this shit show and people getting dramatic over gyms being closed is frankly embarrassing. It won't be forever and unless there is a substantial decline in your local covid cases then you are giving other healthcare workers a slap in the face by demanding gyms reopen now"

This is the basis of most covid arguments. Take another social issue and compare it to covid, obesity doesn't cause covid. Try stay in point. Very few studies that I'm aware of have been done in gyms others than using contact tracing data from covid apps. The uptake on the use of covid app for the 18 to 40 age groups in tiny so data in not in any way accurate. It's a non argument.

You stated yourself that it's an hour away from home to clear your head, surely you could go for a walk. Do you think people with health issues to the point of needing physio or recovery are safe in an enclosed space with increased arobic volumes in the air and an extremely high turn over of equipment. Also do you think masks should be worn in gyms

"It seems stay fit and healthy is not as essential as getting a greasy Takeaway

You don't need a gym to stay fit and healthy .

But a lot do. Good for the health of the nation yet shut. Madness!

Firstly the nation do not use gyms.

Secondly before gyms existed are you saying people were unfit?

No because there wasn't takeaways on tap then

That wasnt the point i was trying to get across.

But true .

Before there were gyms, junk food was not as readily available.

So people we not unfit because there was no so much junk food around.

People actually cooked.

That's rubbish ...people cook yes but doesnt mean its healthy food . Gyms should be closed ..for now .They will reopen but in the meantime we can still exercise but in a different way.

You asked where people were unfit before gyms .

My answer no they were not unfit because of the lack of junk foods and takeaways in those days

I disagree"

Which you are free to do.

There was a survey done just before the lockdown which showed gyms to be about 8th on the list.

It's a pointless argument anyway as They are not going to open them again whilst we are in full lockdown.

You are eating more (bulking), as you are burning more naturally due to the time of year, simple fact is if you kept to your usual diet you'd be ripped in summer. It'd mean you could eat what you liked summer as you'd burn it off rather than lose mass.

I was saying the other day, people can go to hobbycraft, whsmiths and other places alike, but i cant go to the golf course, were no more then 4 of us play a hole at once and we are in the open and extremely easy to distance ourselves. But can go in stores and people invade your space. I do agree some of the rules make little to no sense

I'm guessing you can work on health and fitness for a few weeks without going to a gym though? I mean if it's so critical there are work around aren't there?

Not saying I agree with feeding the nation crap fast food and making it harder to exercise for gym goers. I agree it's crap. And paying people to eat more food for a nation rife with obesity and with a disease that affects obese unfit people more than any other demographic seems ridiculous. But rather than keep moaning about it... There are plenty of ways to keep fit ad healthy outside a gym aren't there?

Gyms have a lot of exhaling and sweat dripping on to the machines which you don’t get in takeaways.

We can all pick holes in the rules but really It’s not about what you can get away with, it’s ALL about how many bullets you want to put in the gun you’re play radian roulette with.

"If you have trouble understanding the reasoning have a google for an article in Nature titled 'Mobility network models of COVID-19 explain inequities and inform reopening'

But when things start opening up again they better not be left to the end like last time "

Left to the end?

I want to get out into a croud and leap about with them to a live band.

That 'really' helps my metal health, and that hasn't come back at all, but I can understand why.

Surely people who use the gym can understand that even if it only posses a tiny risk (which I honestly don't understand how that can be true), it is still a risk and there are plenty of alternatives (running, cycling, getting weights from Amazon and lifting at home, etc)?

The risks of a takeaway are much, much lower, and are also just as important to some, especially those that have been in isolation since the start of this.

Some of it makes no sense. You can sleep with your partner but not play tennis with them at the local club. Golf introduced new rules. No rakes in bunkers, no touching the flags, clubhouse closed,no score cards handed in, no sharing cars to get there. Must be safer than most but probably stopped in case it was viewed as an elitest tory sport like pheasant shooting.

Gyms are totally different. Enclosed, air conditioned often, breathing heavy, don't forget choirs are banned, all that body fluid and shared showering facilities.. best joint an outdoor boot camp. It's safer...

Well if you are an inner city dweller you can get your takeaway delivered to your door.

They must want folk to become obese as surely this is not going to help.

As for gyms, cross contamination on equipment is really the only risk?

Takeaways are open purely for financial reasons, I agree that it makes no sense to keep them open and not gyms but there are plenty of other ways to exercise rather than going to the gym.

While the mental health argument is salient it’s been shown that going for a walk in the fresh air is good for your mental health too. What isn’t is deciding that the only thing that helps it is the gym and fixating on that rather than looking for other coping mechanisms.

Personally I’d close both for a limited period, but it’s not up to me.

I suppose we are all amateur doctors and psychologists. The point for me is not that garden centres are open but that people are choosing to go their. Their free choice but won't get me near one. And as for gym goers. For many, gym is an addiction. They crave and need it. I just hope they can be inventive. Cardio or weight training is easily adapted elsewhere. Just be imaginative. I remember one of the Rocky films where Rocky was to fight the Russian Drago. Drago was in a high tech gym. Rocky was in the great outdoors running free and chopping logs.. and there was only one winner...

From Public health England and the bbc

The only government data on gyms comes from Public Health England's surveillance report, which is _ased on data from Test and Trace .

That data puts gyms on 2.8%, while supermarkets are 11.2%, pubs and bars are 7.4% and secondary schools are 6.8%.

What those percentages mean is a bit tricky - here's where they come from.

In the week to 25 October, 107,046 people who had tested positive for coronavirus were referred for contact tracing.

Of those, 33,233 had been somewhere in the previous seven days that at least one other person contacted had visited.

About 930 of those said they had been to the gym - that's 2.8% of all the common locations reported. We don't know if they caught it at the gym - we just know they visited the gym.

Is that a lot? It's hard to tell - you need to take into account how many people visit a gym regularly compared with, for example, a supermarket.

The point is that for the latest week, gyms came sixth on the list of common locations, ahead of people attending universities, people working in care homes and people going shopping for clothes.

This who have tested negative or have been vaccinated effectively..sure..why not. We are testing approx 2.2m people a week as negative... Why not find a way to allow them to do more. Spend more, work more...

Only issue with the vaccination comment is... There is no tested and approved and manufactured and disttibuted vaccine yet. Small issue!

Not quite sure what the two things have in common. Some people enjoy a take away, some enjoy the gym. But thats the only comparison i can see.

If you are trying to compare them because eating certain takeaways are deemed unhealty therefore gyms should be open to combat that, then its a pointless comparison.

Most of them sell some kind of food and also pet food/products which means they can open up.

I saw a vape shop starting to sell vitamins so they could open up, just a small addition for them to start trading again.

Vape shop owners are not the most ethical of individuals at the best of times, most would be happy to trade any kind of narcotic they can find a legal loophole to sell

Never been in one so can’t comment on that but just shows there are little loop holes that allow places to open back up.

And the issue here is... If everyone is applauded for finding loopholes to allow them to be "unlockeddown".. Firstly it completely invalidates the notion of a lockdown but most importantly does sweet fa to reduce the spread of infections, the inevitable hospitalisations that follow and then the deaths....

We need to go back to basics for a bit and focus on essential only. "

It's depressing.

"Gyms closed but Macdonald's drive in still open say it all really

Place where you go indoors and stay indoors with a bunch of people is closed, while place where you drive and get stuff is open. Says it all really

One gets you fit,one gets you fat.

Says it all really.

One risks spreading a pandemic illness, the other one doesn't.

I'm astonished you can't tell the difference.

I do know going to one helps you fight any infection you get.

Going to the other fills your body with fats, salts and sugars .

But hey ho."

Oh, so you want to use public health restrictions to close businesses you disapprove of?

I think perhaps we can agree that some (perhaps many) of the lockdown restrictions seem rather arbitrary and nonsensical... Golf course closures being one... I'm sure there are others... And as the op has written in his opinion gyms.

If we all stop spreading the virus infections, to a more controllable level, the sooner we can get back to all things being open to a degree. The more people attempt to encourage the spread... The longer and harder it's going to be for everyone.

I also think accurate, unambiguous data (or the best that is available) showing how decisions were arrived at would probably help our understanding and hopefully garner more support of any local or central govt restrictions. Rather than carping about the unfairness of some of the measures.

It wasn't healthy before the lockdown, but you can't use the pandemic as an excuse to shut it down.

You have to consider what is essential, what has risk factors and what has alternatives.

Are gyms essential? No. There are plenty of ways to exercise away from a gym.

Are there safer alternatives to the gym? Yes. Even if the gym only offers a slight risk, there are safer alternatives.

Are takeaway essential? Yes. If you are isolating and run out of food, how else will you eat? This did happen to a lot of people during the first lockdown as all delivery slots were booked up.

Are there safer alternatives to takeaways? Not if you are out of food and need to eat.

Playing devil's advocate here... Winter months, dark, broken uneven pavements, broken street lighting, dog crap on pavements, ... Dark badly lit parks.. Wonder how many slip, trip, fall, get clipped by cars running around the streets and parks in Britain in the dark, that may have been on a treadmill, bike, smiths rack etc in a gym (food for thought)...

And wonder when take away flood became the only game in town when people are hungry.... Maybe a shop is open for food too.? Not that it's any covid safer than a takeaway but the food might be slightly healthier... Might be..

First point - yes, people can have accidents running outside. People can also have accidents at the gym.

There are excercises you can do indoors if outside gets too dangerous.

Seconds point - As I said, for people isolating. That means they can't go to the shops.

Also, not 'all' takeaways are McD. You can actually get healthy foods delivered.

Yes I understand.

Like a lot of these threads there is usually agreement on about 90 per cent of things and people argue / debate real outlier cases. Still it's that or watch another yoga video...

yep.

To be fair I feel sorry for people that love the gym, but everyone is missing out on something they love at the moment.

We just need to get on and get past this on the best way possible so life and the things we love can come back to some sort of normality rather than fighting amongst ourselves.

"Is it just me or do you also find the reasoning behind this a strange one? In my opinion mental health is more important

A walk would do you much more good "

Not if you are on a specific training regime, ie using weights etc. Walking is fine for cardio and toning, but you won't see people walking around with dumbells etc. But then, maybe shag can start off a new fitness craze lol.

Seems like this post is yet another dig at people who eat takeaway

They've stayed open for people in self-isolation who can't get to shops for essentials, just like last time. Don't know about you, but when I'm sick cooking is the last thing on my mind. Plus, remember all the bare shelves? Takeaways were a godsend for many who weren't able to get food at all.

Also, the gyms might be alright now but imagine the transmission risk in January when they're usually heaving.

"As a tradesman I can go into many homes during a single day moving from one to another yet their families aren't allowed to visit.

The logic behind that is.........

The logic is if you can not visit those homes you go broke..."

Why, we can furlough just like everyone else?

Gyms are a risk.

Takeaways are less of a risk.

It's an international emergency. I want to go back as much as anyone, but for pity's sake, we make do.
