"That was eradicated by a global vaccination program WOULD some prefer that was still about "

Smallpox has no non human vectors - completely different kind of virus and the ONLY one human disease in history to be eradicated by vaccination.

Smallpox also had a mortality rate of 30%. COVID is not even comparable to it although judging by government/public reaction you would think they were.

Smallpox is still around but not on an epidemic level. You can get the flu jab every year to lessen your symptoms, not eliminate them. Same with covid. No big deal, like every flu, you get it and survive it or curl up and die from it.

By the way, it is really painful when it's in your chest.

"Smallpox is still around but not on an epidemic level. "

Really ? I thought the WHO declared it eradicated in 1980.

The last case of "wild" smallpox was in 1977 in Somalia and there was a laboratory-acquired case in the United Kingdom in 1978.

The WHO declared it eradicated in 1980, correct.

"Smallpox is still around but not on an epidemic level.

Really ? I thought the WHO declared it eradicated in 1980. "

It was declared eradicated in 1979 with the last outbreak in 1949.

Although the only virus to be eradicated, it's not the only success.

Almost every vaccine is a success story in reducing death and illness.

Not so long ago 1 in 5 children used to die in the west, That's now 1 in 300. That is a huge difference and this really should not be ignored.

That in itself demonstrates the effectiveness of vaccination.

Victoria, London

Used to work at Joyce Green Hospital, Dartford. It was an infectious diseases hospital and had smallpox boats moored up on the Thames. It was fascinating.

Here and there

"That was eradicated by a global vaccination program WOULD some prefer that was still about "

I doubt anyone wants any infectious disease around or any other life threatening or debilitating condition for that matter.

It did take over 200 years to eradicate too...
