Many companies don't under 14 isolation rules

I've just completed 14 days isolation because a member of my team tested positive for covid.

It meant I completely missed the birth of my first child 2 days ago and I won't get to actually meet him until later today when they come out of hospital.

Track and trace state if your in close contact with a confirm positive person you MUST isolate for the FULL 14 days.

You can only get a test if symptoms develop.

This is because exposure to transmission can take up to 7 to 10 days to show as a positive in a test and then a further 2 to 3 days for symptoms to develop hence 14 days.

Track and trace said the biggest battle they currently face is employers not following this.

I spoke to an track and trace agent who said whilst people not following the rules is a big problem the following is even worse.

Many employers are sending covid exposed people for a test within a few days by encouraging them to put they have symptoms or even going as far as paying for a private test. In most cases a test taken this early comes back as a negative. They then use this to force the individual back to work. So they miss only a few days at most and not the 14.

Track and trace said this is what is behind some of the big covid rates in some of the workplaces like factories, offices etc.

Don't have any valuable input on workplace covid testing but congratulations on becoming a father OP! it's a shame you missed their birth but the important thing is to stay safe, having a baby during this time is bound to be such a unique and challenging experience. Good luck!

Thanks Amber I'm so nervous he should be home in the next hour eek!

I've come to terms with missing the birth and his first few days as the main thing is him and K and both healthy

Sadly I've friends who had to update HR departments of what the rules are.

The fact the full 14 days isolation has heavy financial recriminations for many people is a big part of the problem. Trying to claim 500 pound that takes ages to come just doesn't cut the mustard.

Initially people faced pot luck odds of getting something, until Burnham and other northern Mayors pushed for financial help. It would be intelligent to spend money on getting the infected to not lose out financially, as they are the people who could stop this spreading. It would be 1 of the best uses for public spending.

congrats on the birth your in for the best time of your life re the £500 has taken me three days just to get the application sent due to the system not accepting pdf documents ! hopefully here something in the next two days fingers crossed

6 of my work colleagues tested positive but the rest of us need to work as normal even though we were in close contact with them before they got the results. It is very stressful.

This is another huge part of the problem. I made HR speak to track and trace directly I shouldn't have had to do that.

All it takes is one bad Manager with a covid denying type of attitude who is responsible for others sadly.

Thanks for all the well wishes my son is awesome! He is such a good baby. He's just slept on my chest for that last 2 hrs.

Also yes I've done my first shirt nappy successfully lol.

Im aware of workplaces that have told staff not to use the track & trace app as they're less likely to have to take time off (head in the sand - if we don't know then it can't harm us)

Absolutely that's yet another part of the problem!

One of my clients workplace have banned the use of Bluetooth at work as a way to keep it from working in the factory and wider site.
