Due to covid carbord is costing more

Waste carbord has gone from

£5 per tone

To

£32 per tone

And it is looking like there might be a shortage we are finding it hard at work to purchase shippers the box we put finished goods in to go on to a pallet.

I guess some of this is down to big companies shopping more like Amazon.

There is also a UK shortage of timber as our friends from the USA have flown across the pond and bought virtually every last stick of it.

Good luck if your fence blows down.

Is it due to production shutdowns, or is the reason for the virus causing this known?

It will be good if it cuts down the size of the oversized boxes that delivered stuff comes in.

It is due to more wast going to land fill and incineration due to waste from house holds have gone up and is harder to sort due to covid.

So there is less fiber going into the mill's..

So there is less cardboard to make boxes

When I was a kid in the 1950s we used to collect scrap cardboard, store it in a mates shed, when the shed was full we would sell it to a waste paper company for 3 old pence a lb (£28 per tonne) Happy days.

I am a prolific user of small cardboard boxes and as yet have not noticed a price increase of late, also I do recycle and reuse as many boxes as possible.

The cardboard boxes I buy are banded in bundles of 25, and yes I do recycle the plastic banding.

No it is stranded to a 10' x 20' pallet.

We will have to slow production down next month.

People have massively cut down on plastic use, the result is more cardboard is being used, recycled paper has been reduced due to office closures, and stay at home workers. No new cardboard machines or lines have been put into operation. Result demand sky high, production very low.

Waste paper prices lag behind virgin pulp prices. Last year pulp prices were still at a fairly high price though slightly lower than the year before. Waste prices over here are also affected by how much we export to china. Energy prices and effluent costs in the mills also have a large effect. Many mills have been taking downtime, a typical mill making paper for the cardboard producers run 24/7 with maintenance shuts of 12hrs every 8 weeks or so. Many have only been able to run for 3 weeks out of 4 due to fall in demand. They dont carry much stock either as JIT is the order of the day for fluting and liners. Its a perfect shitstorm. £35/t has been seen before though, in the early noughties.

Ps, should that not be ' what is it with'?

No it's covid as there is not as much waste from offices and the work place for the mill's to work with.

Most house hold waste is going to incineration as you can't have people working with it as it could also me contaminated
