What do people think this vaccine is going to do? Allow the government to control our bodies or something?

This vaccine is very much a good thing, a step in the right direction.

We don't know because it has been rushed through trials.

Well I am over 80 and not yet in a care home, seemingly when it is available I will be in category 2 in the pecking order.

I will be knocking the door down to be first in the queue after all at my age I have nothing to lose.

I would point the Pfizers other success story is Viagra and that has given me hours of enjoyment over the years.

True in essence, but side effect modelling will be far advanced from when Thalidomide was rolled out. Plus ‘developed quickly’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘developed badly’.

The Government didn’t do much of a sales pitch by absolving any vaccine manufacturers of side-effect repercussions, but it would still be risking future commercial and reputational suicide for those manufacturers to produce something dangerous. Big Pharma likes big money, and I’m pretty sure they’d want to keep making at not be damaged by messing this up.

They're doing trials specifically to identify any adverse effects. Thalidomide was about a long time ago and the knowledge of drug action wasn't well researched or known at the time. They thought it just treated morning sickness in pregnant women, they didn't know that it caused birth defects. Times have changed.

There’s a lot of anti-vaccination stuff around - not sure where the ideas originate and it’s easy to think it’s a conspiracy but I think it’s a bit sinister and I’m ignoring it. If notice had been taken of this in the past then people would still be dying of common infections.

"

I think there's a lot of cognitive dissonance and bias here. This is new therefore scary.

A blog from Effectively Cochrane (appears to be associated with the Cochrane reviews, an established group doing medical meta-analyses) in 2016, "Paracetamol: widely used and largely ineffective" suggests that paracetamol has marginal if any benefit and considerable risk of harm. But it's familiar so people take it.

Vaccines have been subject to magical thinking about how scary they are since Jenner. In reality they're subject to more rigorous safety testing than most medical interventions, including over the counter stuff.

Ive got no problem with anyine having or taking what they wont..

Ive not needed to take any... Headache probably dehydrated so drink water... Pain is never thst bad ive needed it..

The problems i see lay with society.. The world is so fast paced that prople don't have time to slow down or stop, they want and need the quick fix to carry on. GPs don't have time to sit and talk about symptoms and the causes. Its a quick 8-10 min apt and out.. Which usually entails tske these meds.. Lots if ailments can be fixed with lifestyle changes but takes time.. So people need the quick fix instead over looking at themselves and adjusting their lifestyle for a better lifestyle..

I take medication, every single day, that has a worse safety profile than any vaccine. Have for over 21 years.

I don't give it a thought. One because it's a safe drug, and two because the alternative is much worse. It'd take about a year of complete non intervention, but I'd die eventually.

And what did I do, what healthy lifestyle did I miss, to need medication?

It's genetic. Bad luck. It hit when I was a skinny, extremely physically active, nauseatingly healthy teenager.

"It takes 10 to 15 years to develop a vaccine !!! Enough said I won’t be having any vaccine no thank you .... "

Except it doesn't take 10 years. It can take varying amounts of time, with 1 vaccine sitting on top of earlier work done in foundation for it and others. Some are longer, others quicker. Where funding isn't 1 of the factors holding work up, between development stages, the loss of interruptions is a huge benefit. This is high profile and there's not a shortage of participant volunters, as other vaccines may have.

This 10 years figure seems to be another plucked straight from some antivaxx crib sheet.

I'd imagine so if it had a history of causing an adverse long term effect in people but the flu jab has had years of study.

Seems to me some condemn even before peer reviews and scientific studies of the vaccine have been carried out. Many vaccines in use today carry risks for some. Alexander Flemings penicillin carries risks for some but we still use it. I'll make a judgement when I have better informed opinion from the best of our experts. Lets not be hasty in condemning and measure the risks against a global death toll exceeding one million people plus and still growing.

Say if 10% of uptakes resulted in the same long term effect you'd probably have a case but let's just wait for the reports to be publicised.

At a quick glance I can't find the rationale for the UK vaccine compensation scheme, but I know that the US equivalent is because vaccines tend to be low profit making, but high importance for public health. Risks are inevitable on the level of population, and so for the purposes of ensuring that the risk of these diseases is suppressed, the government takes on some of the responsibility for vaccine liability.

I'm sure this will attract some tin foil, but it sounds to me like government saying that it's worth paying for when extremely rare side effects happen.

All this anti vaccine bollocks never happened pre internet. I was vaccinated very young at school for various things such as polio and diphtheria. I've also had vaccinations for travelling to certain countries. I'm 67 and have never really had a day's illness in my life. Many kids a few years older than me got terrible diseases such as polio.(Google Ian Dury). The invention of vaccination was one of mankind's great leaps forward and has saved millions of lives. Feel free to believe the drivel and not get vaccinated. But please don't stop your family members or kids from doing so.

Anti vaccine bollocks dates back to the invention of vaccines. It's become a lot louder and a lot nastier since the internet, though.

"At a quick glance I can't find the rationale for the UK vaccine compensation scheme, but I know that the US equivalent is because vaccines tend to be low profit making, but high importance for public health. Risks are inevitable on the level of population, and so for the purposes of ensuring that the risk of these diseases is suppressed, the government takes on some of the responsibility for vaccine liability.

I'm sure this will attract some tin foil, but it sounds to me like government saying that it's worth paying for when extremely rare side effects happen."

Come January we pull out of the European Medicines Agency via Brexit and at the moment we have no alternative to oversee future medicines so if the EMA have some reservations effectively our government can ignore and steam ahead.

Yes.

Three questions. One, are vaccines safe and effective?

Two, on what basis do public vaccine compensation bodies exist?

Three, what does Brexit mean for the regulation and safety of medication in the UK?

1. Yes with years of testing & data.

2. I believe it is in/was in pharmaceutical companies contracts when developing vaccines.

3.That's the million dollar question because we currently have no alternative to the EMA

"What do people think this vaccine is going to do? Allow the government to control our bodies or something?

This vaccine is very much a good thing, a step in the right direction.

Is it though? Are there any long term side effects? Is it the next Thalidomide?

We don't know because it has been rushed through trials. "

One thing we do know the effects of though is _not_ being vaccinated against covid-19 - an extremely high probability of catching a disease that (roll the dice) can vary from minor sickness to severe pain, to respiratory difficulty and damage to internal organs, to (in about 1 in 100) death. And in all cases of contracting the disease, a ultra high chance of passing it on to other people, so that even if you personally are one of the lucky ones there is a high chance that someone you are close to will be one of the unlucky ones.

I would respectfully suggest that all those spreading disinformation about vaccines, screaming about how dangerous they are, should immediately go out and get themselves a proper dose of the disease and build up some of that herd immunity if they are so sure that the disease is harmless and the vaccine will be dangerous.

And no, this _does_not_ mean that i would go pump myself full of any old crap that someone proclaimed was a cure for covid. Pretty well any snake oil that Trump or his like is pushing, is not going anywhere near me.

These forums on a vaccine just baffle me. At the end of the day no one is forcing anyone to take it. So if you don t want it dont have it .

But dont complain about and slag off people who are prepared to take it.

Oh look this seems to be a familiar trait on here . "He/she/they wont meet me but will meet others! there must be some thing wrong with them.

No nothing wrong just "personal choice" in a free society!

Hmm Viagra that drug that was designed for heart conditions and had accidental side effects. Also can give a vile headache and blurred vision and anyone with blood pressure concerns should be careful mixing the two

I would not take viagra.

"

I've taken Viagra regularly for years and never had a headache, or any other side effects with it (other than an erection).

I have had side effects when taking some of the generic versions though (and not always an erection).

All these anti-vaxxers, sorry, ‘free thinking people’ that want a world without vaccines.

Here you are..

Here’s the world without just one vaccine.

And a virulent strain of virus that’s changed socialising as we know it.

Everything has a risk associated with it.

We’ll still be taking the vaccine ASAP.

And, those that look down on people who take medication..

Shame on you.

Some people have no choice and the meds they take allow them to live as normal a life as possible.

Even the people that you think are outwardly healthy.

Not all illness is visible.

We don't know because it has been rushed through trials.

Big Pharma likes big money, and I’m pretty sure they’d want to keep making at not be damaged by messing this up."

Does anyone know if the potential protection a vaccine for cov-sars2 may give is the same as the virus would or would not give or does it work on another mechanism

It's good that many are so positive about the current vaccine studies however

I was not aware that we know one way or another that humans can become immune

The last data I heard suggested cov19 infection gave 3 months protection and re infection could not be ruled out ?

If this is the limited knowledge gleaned from millions of infectious I'm not able to understand robust congruence that a vaccine (if using the same virus shape profile to trigger t cells) can produce an immune response further than the virus after a shorter term of study on only 20 000 people across a myriad of hard to control for geographic locations

I have an open mind that we may have a promising vaccine that may be part of our battle

I cannot see there is anywhere near enough data to validate the Hope's nor enough data to dash them

I say

Study in progress a strong position either way is just emotion

I don't know. Reinfection is typical of coronaviruses.

I think the idea behind a lot of vaccines is that the low antigenic drift in the spike protein should lead to greater immunity. But it looks like with this one boosters will be needed anyway.

All you have to do is research what’s in these vaccines and your realise instantly why ! . This was also tested on 63 women recently and 61 became infertile ! Why would they want to vaccinate people for a virus with a 99.98% survival rate ! Wake up people ! It won’t be a good outcome for whoever decides to have it ! Exactly! Seems odd to me how some people would rather go without saying they are scared when the actual disease can be very painful and also the whole big chance of infection other

On a good note, with all these antivax people, hopefully we will have enough vaccines for people who really want it and need it

With a 90% success rate absolutely none of this matters. Have the vaccine, don’t have vaccine, it’s up to you. As long as the vaccine is available to those who want it, things can go back to normal.

Do any of you know that feeling of not worrying about getting it for x period of time

Vaccines these days especially in this country have to go through so many test for approval

This is so people don’t get sued

Yes I agree not enough research carried out but enough to save lives

Only time will tell. It’s about personal choice

I have the flu jab every year for a suppressed immune system and this is the first time I’ve been ill for 3 years

So my personal choice is take it

I think this issue is that people no longer trust government (irrespective of party).

Thalidomide is still used in a very regulated environment and has positive effects. But at the time of development people were unaware of the possible issues with new drugs, we were too innocent.

Then there was the idiot and the MMR avoidance. 1000's of kids missing a very necessary vaccination all because of some idiot dr and a throw away statement.

People all to easily believe the rubbish on the internet, how many times have you met someone on here who said they were 35, but in reality were 50?

Can a drug be thoroughly tested in such a short period of time? What would the effects be on say a pregnant person? I dont have the answer, but if I was a pregnant lady these would be the questions I would want answering. Surely for results on something like that you are talking 9months time for physical and may be 4years for developmental side effects to present themselves?

I guess you just have to weigh up the risks on an individual basis.

An old chap in a care home has more risk from Corona than a younger person, and side effects are less likely to present before end of life.

Its a very individual decision.

I suggest people look at this link with regards to how vaccines are tested and approved.

http://vk.ovg.ox.ac.uk/vk/vaccine-development

The Pfizer vaccine has already reached/passed phase 3. (44,000 trial subjects I believe?)

The testing phase of vaccines is usually the shortest part, and it would normally take much longer to actually develop in the first place.. and there are a few reasons it’s taken a much reduced time to do this.

1. The vaccine was designed using innovative genetic analysis and computer modelling... rather than the traditional trial and error approach.

2. There has been unprecedented global cooperation and information sharing between vaccine research scientists, it’s been a team effort rather than a race to be a sole winner.

3. Literally millions of pounds/dollars/Euros etc. have been thrown at the problem, most vaccines are developed with a tiny fraction of this.

This vaccine is becoming available faster than before because science has got to the point that it’s possible. Not because it’s unsafe

"

I think this is what I have trouble with.

Public health is everyone's responsibility. It's not personal choice. (Plus most people don't know enough about the issues to make truly informed decisions)

If x chooses not to vaccinate, they potentially spread the disease. Oh but you're vaccinated, you're fine. Maybe. What about the 10% it doesn't work for? They did their bit and are put at risk by someone else's "personal choice". Those who are too old, too young, can't be vaccinated on medical grounds? Why should their protection be compromised because someone reads bullshit about vaccines and assumes they'll be fine?

And to add to that point 2

The research has been ongoing for 20 years, rapidly accelerated by innovation in technology 5 years ago and then all the research targeted at Covid within WEEKS of the isolation of the virus and then months in testing.

But some ignorant people will believe it was done in someone's garage in a fortnight and tested on a rabbit.

Presumably whatever is in it uses drugs/ingredients where the side effects are already known about, I dont imagine there is much they could use that hasnt been through rigorous testing already. It's the time thing that would get me, you cant rush the time needed to see the actual long term effects or subtle problems that could creep in, everything needs a tweaking process.

To add my 10 cents..

I won't be taking the Vaccine, but i'm neither desperate, nor worried about covid. We shouldn't be knocking those wanting to build some form of anti bodies/t-cells.

Normal vaccination trials take 5-10 years but then they aren't under pressure in the same sense or had the amount of money thrown at them like this. Certainly not an Anti-vaxxer here.

Good luck to anyone who has it and fingers crossed it allows life to go back to some normality.

People have the right to their opinion, but they do not have the right to ignore the facts. Badly informed Covidiots and irresponsible Anti-vaxxers will prolong the time it takes society to recover from this virus pandemic, it's a pity the authorities can't deal with them.

The biggest problem i have is the company whos vaccine we are trusting.

Pfizer.

Largest fine in US corporate history. 2.3 billion for miss promotion of meds and paying docs kickbacks to promote said meds.

In the 90s they made defective heart valves and deliberately misslead over these causing 100s of deaths. 10million settlement.

60mill settlement for diabetic meds that caused liver failure again more deaths.

90mill fine here in UK for raising epilepsy drug prices by 2600% for our NHS

450mill fine for racketeering after payin docs 20mill to promote their meds

75mill settlement for violating international law after being sued by Nigerian families for using their kids as human guinea pigs without consent.

The list goes on and on.

Is this really a company we want to put our trust in?

Anyway why are folk bothered about the non vaxers surely if u get it you will be fine and dandy.

"Can you back that comment up with factual evidence please. Then I might just be able to make an informed decision.

Or are you just another conspiracy theorist blowing out your ass. "

I’ve just seen a short video on it naming just a few of the litigations they’ve had over the years. It would seem that 100’s of men, women and children have died because they’ve done everything from selling heart valves that they knew to be inappropriate for the patients they sold them to, using kids from poorer countries as human guinea pigs for new medication - and killing them in the process - and paying thousands of medical practitioners to validate products that were ineffective and, in some cases, lethal. And yes - I googled the cases for backup - and it was all true. They’ve been fined hundreds of millions in courts all over the world.

I don’t normally jump on bandwagons - but I think I’ll wait until the British ones produce results.

Also we have absolutely no clue of the long term side effects if there are any. It's all been rushed through far too quickly. As far as I'm aware I may be wrong. Normal vaccines take 18months of human trials before determining if they are safe or not yet this one is ready in a fraction of the time. I'll pass for now thanks.

I’m all for an effective vaccine - but the company producing said vaccine has an abominable track record and shouldn’t, imo, still be trading at all.

With their record - it’s entirely possible that more will die from their vaccine than from Covid itself.

Whilst I understand there’s an urgency - it’s also vital for the vaccine to be safe and ethical.

From what I’ve read - theirs is about as bad as it can get. I’m honestly amazed that they’re still allowed to trade - I can only assume they’ve bought friends in high places.

I just think their horrendous track record shows beyond doubt that they are totally unethical and have zero regard for human life.

I honestly think getting covid would be safer for the majority of us than taking a vaccine from a company like that.

I won’t post again as I feel I’ve made my point as strongly as I can and can’t really add to it.

All I would say to anyone considering this vaccine is - please, please research the company/litigations first. It makes for shocking and harrowing reading.

Many pharmaceutical companies have been guilty of misleading and unethical practices.

Not a lot to pick and choose between any of them.

However, any company that gets things 'wrong' under the current global scrutiny won't have a business left.

Bit hypocritical isnt it though ?

refusing to take an 'untested drug' when so many are already doing that every week ? so many people are already ingesting drugs that are proven to be bad for them too .. cigarettes, alcohol , paracetemol ,Co codamol ..

And then there's the younger people trying out the legal highs every weekend too .. which are also untested .

Course that's not everyone .. so the small minority who don't do any of the above .. I guess you can refuse to take something that might probably be really good for you but has a slim chance of not being ..

Everyone else .. just get in line like the rest of us and do whats right ..

Absolutely.

Given that we appear to be looking at a press release, I would want to wait until the vaccine trial is published (and scientifically reviewed) in full.

I'm assuming that those individuals on the trial that have received the vaccine (or placebo) are unlikely to be the very young or the very old (under 12 / over 80) so there's going to be lots of unknowns regarding an individual's suitability to receive the vaccine at this stage e.g.

Minimum age, maximum age, medical history (immunocompromise, pregnancy, epilepsy, cancer, medication e.g.steroid use, vaccination history, previous reaction to components of the vaccine).

The more of us get vaccinated, the more of us can get our lives back, and sooner.

Whether it's a Pfizer vaccine or another one.

The appropriate people will look through the data and decide what to approve and for whom. And then we'll all have to have a discussion with our doctor, I suppose.

Whilst I understand there’s an urgency - it’s also vital for the vaccine to be safe and ethical. "

I realise that swinging involves many fantasies, but really !!

"What do people think this vaccine is going to do? Allow the government to control our bodies or something?

This vaccine is very much a good thing, a step in the right direction.

Is it though? Are there any long term side effects? Is it the next Thalidomide?

We don't know because it has been rushed through trials. "

if you want to wait 20 years for to see if it ok then go ahead if you survive that long

"

Vaccine by Christmas? Clubs open by Easter 2021?

I love you optimism, but I fear it will be much longer without a multi faceted approach.

"

It was a question not a statement. If they start vaccination with us older people, perhaps the clubs could open just for us, and you youg'uns will have to wait - ha.

You’ll probably find that the ones who refuse the vaccine are the more responsible and careful ones, they will have done a little research on Pfizer, and know that Pfizer admitted killing 11 children in Nigeria during illegal drug trials, they’d know that Pfizer were fined $2.3 BILLION for health care fraud, and they’d know that Pfizer have thousands upon thousands of current and pending lawsuits. They would also know that GSK rushed out a vaccine for swine flu called Pandemrix, which was quickly withdrawn over safety issues. Please do your own research, I am but a humble careful responsible conspiracy theorist.

Not to mention the hundreds who died as a result of them knowingly selling ineffective/faulty heart valves. Can’t remember how many millions they were fined for that stunt - but it didn’t bring any of the dead back!

I’m a female, 52, never smoked and I’m in good health. Unless a better alternative comes along, I’d rather take my chances on getting covid.

"Anyone who takes that vaccine is mad ! Like sheep to the slaughterhouse !

Just out of interest why?

I'm no anti-vaccer or big pharma bad person but when it comes to light that upon the process of finding a vaccine the pharmaceutical companies demanded that the clause of being sued for long term effects be thrown out you have to start asking a few questions.

Can you sue if the flu vaccine makes you ill??

I'd imagine so if it had a history of causing an adverse long term effect in people but the flu jab has had years of study."

The flu jab changes every year and the injection contains different strains every year so u dont know if it has long term effects but it does save thousands of lives every year. I'm thinking i will have the vaccine when its offered unless when doing my own research I find something that changes my mind

Id rather take this so i can see my nana safely..

... those who refuse it..should nhs refuse to treat? Remember everything the nhs has done in the past has been tried and tested before use.

Insulin... was a trial.. now its life saving.

Ventilators were once a trial..

Oh well freedom of choice..

I guess i value my health and those around me than my lack of the ins and out of every part of the vaccine.

It’s far less mad than the millions who are willing

to buy and take illegal drugs of unknown content, they bought from some guy in a basketball cap. I know which one is far safer.

I always wonder how many antivaccers are actually hypocrites.

You seem to be insinuating that people that don't want to have the vaccine don't value their health...I don't want an unproven vaccine precisely because I value my health.

And if it's as effective as believed it won't matter if unvaccinated people are infected or not, because vaccinated people will be immune

I used the words "freedom of choice " also used the word "i" wish referred to me.. not insinuating about anyone.

I held the hand once of an unvaccinated child.. long blond hair.. amazing shining blue eyes.

Affected by meningitis..paralysed..the only movement was the blinks of their eyes...

... focused my carer to be a nurse. 25 yrs on and proud. And helped many to live...held the hand in death.

Its your choice what you do..

The government don’t care about nobody why in England have we got most deaths when we have the best doctors and the best hospitals but in poor countries there’s no deaths and everyone is continuing a normal lifestyle the government don’t care about me or anyone else they rather let people die than try save us they won’t gain nothing by saving us in fact they are at a loss by saving us

The problem with unvaccinated people, who could be vaccinated choosing not to be vaccinated is that it puts those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons at greater risk. These vaccines will go through the same rigorous tests and trials procedures as other vaccines. The difference in speed is due to advances in science, unprecedented levels of global collaboration and resourcing, reduction of some of the bureaucratic red tape and extraordinary levels of funding. The eyes of the whole world are on the development of these vaccines.

I’ll be getting at soon as It is available for my age and even signed up to be part of the trials.
