As we are entering the flu season it is important to seperate the symptoms of each one, whilst it is almost identical, how do they know the difference, for example if you have the cough and tiredness?

Many people say they have the flu when in fact it's a bad cold. On the couple of occasions I have had the flu, it's been truly awful with sudden onset, hot sweats and then feeling ivy cold,, then feeling really ill, really drained and unwell, with tiredness & lack of energy etc for some weeks after.

It's so similar to covid signs to look out for, there are bound to be many thinking they have covid when it's actually the flu. Better that way though - at least they'll be tested.

You are right there and a bad cold is also very similar so it would be hard to know if it just was that too.

Govt advice is to stay home if you feel unwell and take a test regardless if you have all the symptoms, this virus is widely asymptomatic so we won't get the full picture unless they mass test

Liverpools mass test will be interesting results

For me the big tell was that I had a sore throat and a bit of a cough cough that started without warning.

The cough caused a bit of pain deep in my lungs and felt different to anything I had experienced before.

The horrendous headaches and the change in taste (first noticed coffee started tasting like dentist mouth rinse) came on a few days later.

At no point did I have a temperature that exceeded 37.5°C.

I got tested at within a few hours of the cough starting and before the other symptoms started to appear over the following days.

Flu and colds usually start off mild and get worse with your temperature rising at an early stage.

Those were symptoms, others have stated they experienced different symptoms at the early stage so in any case, if you feel ill, book a test.

I would suggest for everyone, if they don't already have the Kings College and Zoe Covid Symptoms tracker app installed on their phone or tablet, to do so.

Users of the App can report daily with their health; either you are well or unwell. If unwell, there is a list of symptoms they have discovered that are associated with covid, it's a quick tick box exercise of ticking the symptoms you have, whether you have been tested for covid and what the result was.

The study has aided the NHS with earlier diagnosis and has also aided with the understanding of infection spread and where it is happening.

Once levels are back down, this app in conjunction with the NHS app and Track and Trace will help to pick-up localised flareups and help in controlling them at a very early stage.

So the majority of people that I know have had it have ranged from losing taste and smell to feeling like it was the flu . The majority felt like a bad cold .

I’ve known 10 people have it ... for the majority of people this will be how it is .... the minority may develop other issues

The peak season for flu isn't with us yet. Earlier in the year tests were done primarily on people with severe symptoms in hospital. Those were the numbers published, with covid-19 positive results only being counted for the virus. Flu numbers weren't high but were still counted separately.

It's better for people to make themselves aware of the NHS official site that details the symptoms. If you are unwell, stay home to prevent infecting others and get tested as appropriate

As a nurse and been in contact with hundreds of Covid patients no one has ever said its like a cold !! Unbelievable!

The mild pneumonia cane after the flu had knocked me out for 3 weeks.

I certainly don't want to see just how bad Covid is

We haven't reached "flu season" yet but it should be down dramatically due to hygiene, social distancing and gave coverings

70% get no vivid symptoms at all.

Of the remains 30% of people; some get covid similar to a head cold so maybe the loss of smell & taste and a couple of temperature spikes.

Some get a few days of fever spikes, oddly just like when I last had a proper flu, and I had a few days and nights of fever spikes,

Some get more serious symptoms and /or pneumonia (and of course pneumonia isn't fun whether you get it from flu, covid, or any other way) but at no point during or after covid did I get breathing difficulties.

Yes the cough is unique but only in that it's dry and not snotty, again though a dry cough isn't new or unheard of.

So I think it is exceptionally easy to confuse the 2. Especially when people are scared and ill.

Covid 19 is a Corona virus. Flu is caused by the influenza virus. They are not the same.

The covid-19 test does not give a positive result for different types of coronaviruses either.

You are right there, about 70% will get very mild symptoms if non at all

The flu vaccine only protects from some flu strains not all

Also

If a human IS EFFECTIVELY and proactively protecting themselves from cov-sars2 they cannot catch either flu or SARS

Yes that's true.

For example I've had the flu and been really unwell but never for a second thought I was going to die, I'm just recovering from covid and thought on at least two occasions that my time was up.

Difference is and I am saying generally here for most people flu symptoms are the same to lesser or greater extent.

Covid is a different animal completely and seems to be different it keeps attacking from different angles till it finds your weaknesses.

My uncle did die from influenza

Iv met a genuine covid survivor today

I'm not sure we can generalise or predict how either virus will affect an individual

Not sure what you mean? Covid test uses either antibodies or PCR (polymerase chain reaction) specific to the Covid virus - OK there is some issues around specificity of the test and rates of false positives and negatives but basically that is how the tests work.
