"Completely pointless with schools & universities still open. Should have done a 2 week lockdown over half term." This seems obvious to us but why can't the government see it and act?

"I can't see much changing while schools remain open. I understand why they feel like they can't close schools again and disrupt kids education further... but it feels like we really have to go all or nothing. It doesn't really make sense to me that my nephew can go to school and mix with dozens of other kids, but I can't go to the pub for a drink with someone in my support bubble. But I don't know, I guess we'll see. " Ask yourself is it right for schools and universities to be closed just so that I can go to the pub or restaurant for a few meals each month ? If you ask yourself that question I think on balance the answer is schools especially and maybe universities should stay open no matter what I may think. Like you I am not sure about the answer but hope the experts telling the government have got their shit together and giving them the right advice.

"Completely pointless with schools & universities still open. Should have done a 2 week lockdown over half term. This seems obvious to us but why can't the government see it and act?" Because there is alot of politics involved in decisions - Labour called for the 2 week lockdown over half term but the government cannot have the opposition calling the shots no matter how correct it would have been so they wait another 3 weeks

"We're on a main road, and though there's been a reduction in traffic, there's still plenty going past... ....only last night, I was wondering why cars were still passing by long after midnight - nothing was open, no-one's supposed to be visiting anyone... ....and again this morning - traffic going past hours before the supermarkets even opened - who and why?" People going to work? Hospitals? Other emergency workers, cleaners etc?

"I think the effect on locking people in ( mental health ) , locking people away from critical treatments is having greater negative effects than it is positive . We are destined for poverty with financial impact of this( poverty = lower life expectancy) . I think money woukd be better focussed on protecting the elderly and vulnerable than paying people to stop working. " Nobody is being locked in. It's not a lockdown. Not even close to it. It's a waste of time. I don't subscribe to the big bad enemy being school kids or uni students. Uni especially. Let them spread it among themselves for 3 months and they will have a level of immunity. We all need to be a lot less Complacent and stop blaming others. We can do this.

"I don't expect it to stop Dec 2nd, i think Bo Jo is just trying to give the nhs a bit of breathing space & to get the ICU's a little emptier in readiness.." Me neither. Furloughs til end March. The high street is fucked. Debenhams, M&S, John Lewis. Anyone reliant upon Xmas sales like those RED gadget shops.

"well acording to the goverment most infections happen at home, they should be doing the oposite and making us all go out" It's households infecting other households then it spreads between family members. If we reduce inter-household mixing then we reduce that.

"Completely pointless with schools & universities still open. Should have done a 2 week lockdown over half term." I was going to ask, do the English people think Boris made another fuck up by missing the opportunity to coincide a short lockdown with the half term closure of schools??

Our education system has clearly failed so many.. those other causes are fairly consistent, on the other hand, exponential growth would rapidly take Covid deaths into the top 5 on that list if no intervention was made. Anyone who thinks there is some global conspiracy at play has very little understanding of global politics and really isn’t very bright.

" By making it illegal to visit other households (other than some exceptions), by stopping social activities indoors (pubs, cafés, restaurants, hospitality of all kinds), by telling employers to allow WFH wherever possible or to make workplaces Covid secure etc. Those measures should, if followed, minimise the contact between different households.

I was going to ask, do the English people think Boris made another fuck up by missing the opportunity to coincide a short lockdown with the half term closure of schools?? " No, I don't believe he did. The 3 tier system was not given sufficient time to prove it's effectiveness, which it has subsequently done. The government bowed to pressure from Labour, prediction based upon out of date data and demands from some public figures to lock the country down. Yes, the government has made bad decisions along the way but so has every government worldwide. The levels seen in the UK are no different from other European countries of similar population mass. The UK has led the way in development of novel treatments and understanding of the virus and has ploughed billions into R&D and supporting the economy. The government are walking a tightrope trying to maintain the economy while trying to defeat the virus. We, the people, have as much a responsibility as the government to act with due diligence to bring an end to this and we are equally responsible for when it goes wrong.
