For UK citizens? Or just for people who aren't resident here?

The testing on arrival would involve large capacity areas to hold and test people, before immigration. The fast tests are less accurate than PCR tests, so would have false negative results as well as false positives. They all suffer from not showing infection in someone until the virus has established, so would still allow entrance for infected people.

We've got huge levels of infection here, so it's probably not going to make much difference until we reduce it. In spring, travellers brought it in and seeded clusters around the country that then grew expinentially in many places.

You could get advance testing requirements but they still offer some of the weaknesses above.

In the future it could be helpful

China requires 2 negative results in the 14 days before you fly.

Yes. That was what I referred to as the advance testing requirement. It's not perfect but would prevent some with infection from travelling, if the tests are done to a similar or better level than here.

Could prove difficult on the border between NI and the Republic. Certainly for those who live on the border or whose work straddles it

See to fly to the Maldives, a pcr test is required by the airline and on entry to the Maldives, which isn't a problem for us as and for 14 nights + the 3 minutes it takes and the cost is worth it. I'm sure the majority of tourists consider these factors before agreeing to pay to go or rescheduling if applicable.

I believe we will do pcr prior to returning to the UK also, airline requirements. In which case the hotels in the Maldives will arrange it. (I only give the Maldives as an example because I've looked at flights and entry requirements recently) other places don't require a pcr to fly into, other airlines don't require it either.

I don't think it viable for pilots, or crew if they fly there and turn around and come back though. Most airports don't have any facility to test, the time it takes to test and turn around results could potentially mean the pilots and staff are stuck somewhere for 3 days waiting for their results.

Depending on how prevalent covid is in destination, they'd need to isolate for the 3 days, pending test results and there's nothing preventing them contracting covid coming through an airport. In those situations the cost and time required simply isn't viable.

It would take a worldwide effort and quarantine facilities at every airport I doubt that it would ever happen.

Until the U.K becomes less likely to infect you then the holiday destinations or flights, I don't see it as being viable

Is it legal to prevent UK citizens and residents from returning to their home? They may have taken an infection to the other country and it would seem unfair to dump them there, where they may have already been infecting their citizens.

It's not a simple issue. The UK isn't almost clear of the infection, unlike other countries. Testing results can give false confidence, as people are infected but without testable infection for some time after getting it.
