Perhaps supermarkets would be a useful, cheaper mechanism?

The £12 billions test and trace system is dreadful, contacting ever fewer people each time results are published. Time to take that partial NHS privatisation back into the NHS, who have greater expertise and success. Giving it to the wife of a conservative MP is just reckless, when she has no expertise in this and a rrack record of failure.

The UK needs to do the right things for its people, however the testing is managed. Perhaps similar operations to the Liverpool mass testing could coordinate PCR test delivery of kits and tests.

We do have a good RM Postie though who looks after us. K (Mrs) always sorts him a good present at Xmas.

I do love the convenience of Amazon especially as I'm stuck in isolating currently.

I work in a sorting office for Royal mail. The parcels are just thrown into trolleys. No care at Al. Even the OK es marked fragile. We are always putting items in plastic covers with a note apologising for the condition the item is in. It's outrageous

A lot of parcel come wrapped in brown paper, especially stuff from eBay, its the cheapest option, always ripping, the people who send them should send them better wrapped, don't blame RM for poor wrapping

I agree it’s mainly the person who wraps the parcel , I ordered a book got a Xmas gift it came but was badly damaged as it had just been wrapped in brown paper not protection at all to the cover , that had more dents than an old Morris minor

Be surprised if they use amazon to be honest, royal mail delivers to every house 6 days a week, don't think amazon has the capability or infrastructure for that

And, btw, in my experience, Royal Mail do an incredible job.

having worked on an agency basis for just about all the parcels company's bar UPS I can say that they are all much of a muchness re throwing parcels into cages/ back of vans fragile items being mistreated . the only difference is unlike Royal mail they are not obliged by law to deliver the last mile to EVERY address in the country in fact some parcels company's when over stretched are quite fond of dumping whole trailer loads of parcels on royal mail to deliver especially in the run upto Christmas

Contrary to popular belief I'm pretty sure Amazon pay the taxes they are obliged to pay according to current legislation.

If they didn't you can be assured they would be getting a letter from hmrc just like everyone else

I use Royal Mail for my business and i think only once someone has said an item was damaged but due to what was posted i suspect the buyer was lying.

When home test kits first started it was Amazon that delivered and picked our kits up. So they have been doing it in some areas since home test kits were a thing.

I don't know about the rest of UK but in this part of the Scottish NW highlands Royal Mail performs wonderfully. Much faster than their competitors, deliver 6 days a week conpared to 5 for the others and, as others have said, condition is mostly down to how an item is packaged. A sheet of brown paper and Sellotape is asking for problems.

Additionally they charge the same no matter how far the package is being delivered unlike the other couriers whose charges vary with distance

Some people were moaning when the price of a 1st class stamp when up to 76p,its not compulsory to use Royal mail, you don't have to send a letter with them,why don't you take it to the destination yourself and see how far you get on 76p

I'd go with royal mail everytime given the choice. So much easier to deal with if something goes wrong or you have to pick up a parcel. So many other companies have left me high and dry searching for parcels in every corner and knocking on doors as the 'left with neighbour' just doesn't give enough description.

At least if royal mail parcel isn't delivered I always know it will be at a local office for collection. Some of the competitors have said its 20 miles away at depot waiting for re delivery or collection. Not forgetting this covid means they just leave it anywhere and I just get an email saying its been deliver, again I'm left hunting for a parcel like a kid looking for candy on Easter morning

I would rather royal mail got the contract . They have pension funds to support and they employ people on contracts at all levels even if they are temp contracts.

Also loose royal mail we loose the postal infrastructure which should be protected at all costs.

I think it all went wrong when the Royal Mail was changed from a Postal Service to a "For Profit" company. Corners and service cut to maximize profit margins.The boots on the ground postiesare diamonds, it's the company that has failed.

i very rarely get my normal post, nevermind parcels from royal mail, i got taken to court about concil tax last year , i hadnt remembered it was due, and never got any letters, shit me right up, they had sent the bill plus 4 reminders, never got any of them , until the baliffs turned up

The biggest issue since privatisation is that RM are not on a level playing field to all of their competitors! None of their competitors have to abide by a universal service obligation, their prices aren’t subject to regulation, they do not have to abide by the same regulations as RM, they can undercut RM’s prices for letters and then they hand the letters over to RM for the final mile of delivery which RM have to do! RM got fined recently by the regulator for charging their competitors too much for the final mile delivery!

What other private company is instructed that it must complete the workload of its rivals and may only charge a token fee for doing so, increasing its competitors profits and reducing it’s own in the process?

You do realise that most returns to amazon are delivered by Royal Mail and Parcelforce. Not to mention the amount of stock deliveries from small suppliers and marketplace sellers fulfilled by Amazon which is delivered to Amazon distribution centres by Royal Mail and Parcelforce. When you see vehicles going in how do you know that they are delivering it collecting?
