The furlough has probably been extended till March to allow a breathing space for many companies after Xmas when they will be in serious trouble as its the slowest part of the year for them. Will stave off redundancy or at least stagger it.

It is likely we could have another lockdown in early 2021. For me I see this as covering the business / employees that will still be affected by the tier system when lockdown ends; plus stops all the nonsense negotiating when we go into tiers as furlough already there.

On a plus point it has been backdated to so those that got made redundant as this scheme was ending can reapply

I’m not convinced that lockdown has the impact that’s claimed however cases did not shoot up when it was lifted. They started to rise when schools and universities went back.

I have a feeling, nothing more, as I have no evidence whatsoever to back up anything I say!!

Will let Christmas shoppers out last few weeks before Christmas, open pubs 2 weeks before Christmas, during Christmas and New Year and a couple of weeks into 2021 for January sales, let a few quid slosh through the tills and then lockdown until end of February, for most businesses February is not generally a busy month.

With interest rates being at near zero and it costing almost nothing for the government to borrow from investors, it's a good time for them to do so and spend on these schemes. Total debt may exceed GDP but without these government Covid schemes, the market would lose confidence in the UK being able to get back on its feet as quickly, hence less demand for Gilts and higher interest rates offered to attract investors, which then costs more for the government to borrow.

I wouldn't like to be in government now. Labour have it lucky. They can say what they like, like a back seat driver but they don't have to make the hard decisions.

What i dont get about the self employment grants is you apply for it end of November and you get 3 months of payments.

Now lets assume lock down is only for 1 month and it ends in December, then your business operates back to normal(ish) then why do you need the other two months.

Im self employed and will be applying for the grant as my business is affected due to the lockdown but have to take the 3 months money and it was like that on the previous grants.

What about all the people who have already been made redundant because they said the furlough was ending some time ago, now their on job seekers that they can only claim for 6 months then what? They get nothing if they have savings and why should they spend their savings when Furlough is handed out to plenty of people who have savings, all seems a bit out of kilter to me.

But will companies do that ,with future uncertainty,by now P45's will have been issued ( often done by email now)I don't think it's law the companies have to re- hire,and wouldn't they then have to start paying employers national insurance again..etc..Maybe it is law they have to re- hire !

Lockdown till dec to revise the hospital admissions and capacity available, if the nhs is full with no room to manoeuvre then we carry on, if levels are going the right way then we go back into the revised tier system. I think he will keep hospitality closed/limited regardless of where we are

No idea, it doesn’t affect me as not worked this year, but if I was one of those affected I’d definitely be finding out more about it, talking to my ex employer etc

As I say I don’t know much about the scheme but the basic understanding I have of it, is that it was to stop people being made redundant in the first place

I see it not much as the money thing but as a precaution to save one of our greatest assets.....the NHS. If the circuit break will save the NHS, an institution that has been built for decades and one thing the rest of the developed world envy us for, 150 billion is not too much. And for the lives that will be saved too. 1 more life I say, is too much to lose. And for the economy, the 150billion is a fiscal policy that will keep buying and selling going even when earnings are reduced during the lockdown. This measures cumulatively keep the economy afloat.

First furlough scheme was due to end in October but first lockdown ended in July. It is extended further so that business can adjust to quiet reopening and allow trade to come back

same today in Lancashire....are folk ignoring this lockdown,traffic not lessened.Last lockdown every day was like an early Sunday morning on the roads( I don't drive btw)
