Look on the bright side.

There's no restriction to your exercise time allowed outside.

Get on with it ....... gym my arse.

I never thought that bottled water would take off....... never thought people would actually PAY their hard earned to exercise either.

I need a mad idea for next year.

Yeah I'm gutted. I put on loads of weight in the last lockdown and I have only just worked it off and have been hitting the gym every day. Gyms are important for mental health I think too.

I get a lot of benefit from the equipment, the environment, that I can't store in my apartment and other people maintain for me

But FFS it's a health crisis and we're doing badly. We suck it up and improvise.

Plenty of places around Derby and nearby to do exercise, if you can't do it indoors.

It's a pity that gyms are closing, I'm going to miss mine.

I will miss my gym hugely. I'm not really a cardio queen but I am considering, pounding the pavements and starting to run again. It could get ugly though, I'm not a natural runner anymore and the boobs will need gaffer taping to my chest.

I know some people like going to the gym but if it’s mental health you are worried about there are other forms of exercise, perhaps not the specific exercises you want but it is possible to exercise outside the confines of a gym.

I once heard an ex army sergeant major type talking about fitness etc. When they’re deployed in Afghan etc they don’t have a lot of space for phys but need to stay in shape (clearly).

His words “you can destroy yourself physically in a 6ft x 6ft box. You really don’t need anything else”.

Sure - equipment helps. The change of scenery helps. But exercise can be done in small spaces with little or no gear.

Not easy for everyone actually. My wheelchair wouldn't manouvre in a 6ft by 6ft box for a start - it won't even fit through the doorways in my house. I can't exercise standing up and I can't sit on a regular chair in an exercise proof position for more than 10-15mins before my leg goes dead etc. In the gym, I can use the equipment from my wheelchair or recline, fully supported, on a bench. My trained PT to assist me etc. I've been fucking creative with what you can do in a wheelchair outdoors but most of that'll be a write off in the winter due to wet weather (no grip on rims, even with gloves and no chance of going off-road/on soft ground). Also it's very dangerous to be at below-bonnet height in a wheelchair in winter (I have bike lights on, but I'm much lower than a bike, much less responsive and manouverable).

All in all, no, not EVERYONE can easily exercise outdoors/at home etc. I know I find it almost impossible. Wheelchair basketball, the gym etc are all cancelled now, basketball probably till January because the charity can't afford to keep fucking about for a week here and there.

It wasn't just aimed at you, don't worry! I do get a bit peeved with authoritative comments like "all people can....." or "anyone can if they put their minds to it" etc. People say that because THEY can. I've tried wishing my leg to work again properly, but it ain't playing ball and my wheelchair basketball colleagues have all dreamt of amputated limbs, spina bifida, spinal cord injury etc. just disappearing after praying/wishing/hoping/crying, but life simply ain't all unicorns and sprinkles

On a side note, the number of gyms who declined me membership on safety grounds, despite doctor's letters stating I'm fit to exercise, was disgraceful. Very pleased I found the PT I did, however. It's much more expensive as a disabled person to exercise - I can't set up gym equipment on my own so I have to have a PT every time (expensive). Basketball wheelchairs cost several thousand pounds whereas running basketball costs a pair of trainers. *Shrug*

Gyms shutting is an absolute bitch tbh. Last couple of months I've managed to get myself back in a routine and was starting to see results as well. Even worse, I went abroad for 10 days then had to isolate on return for 2 weeks so yesterday was my first day back in the gym for over 3 weeks and now they're shutting again!

Has anyone got any recommendation for resistance bands? Prefer the type you can attach to door frames etc and with multiple weight resistance. Tried my sister's rubber band style ones and wasn't too keen. Any advice much appreciated.

As someone who has been working from home for months being able to go to the gym has helped me immensely, without it my days would have been a trip from bedroom to sofa and back, mental health is again going to suffer for many for due to this and the level of alcohol abuse and domestic violence will undoubtedly increase, it's rapidly becoming the cure is worse than the virus itself

As a gym lover with a heart condition I completely agree. It's so frustrating and dismissive when people tell me I can "just go for a run instead". No I can't! The gym also helps me with managing chronic pain due to nerve damage from endometriosis. As much as I understand why it has to happen, so many people are devastated at the closure of the gyms for a whole number of reasons as well as all the poor self employed PTs.

I just wondered if anyone knew if a petition has been started to get gyms closing during lockdown debated in the Houses Of Parliment ?

It might not help for this lockdown but if might help if it happens again next year.

I am not of the book of face so I dont know whether there is anything on there.

I’m lucky not to have anything going on that means I can’t exercise at home/outdoors

Resistance bands kept me going last time, though not quite the same as lifting weights

I’m trying to see the positives- as we can meet one person from another household I can train in the park with a friend. I think this will end up being my main way of socialising. The exercise will keep us warm!
