Gutted gyms have to close. Outdoor exercise is still allowed but not much fun on cold dark winter nights.

The ones who didn’t say boo about the fact mental health has been criminally underfunded in this country for years but all of a sudden think it’s the most important thing in the world (and entirely by coincidence a reason we shouldn’t lockdown).

I didn't miss it I discounted it .. if the man feels he has a case then there must be a way to approach someone to get the permission/facilities to keep going .. if not then they simply need to either stop or find another way to train .. otherwise its cheating both us and the system :/

My club has been closed since March. We have had very little funding. We still have to pay club overheads on no income. We have very little personal income and are doing what work we can to make ends meet. We face the prospect of losing everything we have worked for an our home could be on the line if this goes on indefinitely. Right now, my mental health is maxed out and lifting is the only focus I have to keep me from completely losing my shit. You can't lift heavy outside. I've had covid and we have no vulnerable people around us. My gym is cleaner than the supermarkets, the buses and most other public areas. They have impeccable standards and I would like to think I am educated and informed enough to decide if my spotless gym with it's restrictions and strict measures are any more risky than shopping in Tesco or brats going to school.

I really don't care about your opinion or anybody elses opinion. Walk a mile in my shoes and you may have an ounce of understanding about how important exercise is to my physical and mental health.

Death and chronic health conditions from other illnesses will be the lasting legacy of this pandemic and like hell am I going to be amongst those numbers.

We have an old farm barn stashed full of excess equipment. Located on an unused part of an actual farm. All set up at the beginning of last lockdown. Squat rack, pull ups, benches and lots of weights. We go and train as we please. All have our time slots and we train. Don't bother anyone. Even two doctors and a male nurse. I've been stopped twice on the way and just tell them I'm off to my job on the farm. Job done and no harm done

Wow just caught up on this thread it seems mental health is being used quite a lot lately to challenge people on here. It kind of defeats the whole point of your argument if your using it for an attack. Closing the gyms is going to affect a lot of people and unless you have experienced mental health yourself, its hard to understand how vital the gym is to people. I for one need the routine to keep sane and theres certain things you just cant get from exercising outside. Lets just all be a bit kinder to each other and understand this lockdown effects us all in different ways

I very well understand, it's one of my coping mechanisms as well. I'm going to struggle.

But one thing causing a lot of people to come unstuck is the raging pandemic.

It's not one or the other, and sometimes compassion requires firmness which may look unkind.

We need to bring the virus down in any way we can. Adapt. Improvise.

Literally took the words out of my mouth.

I think people underestimate how much people rely on them.

It gives me a focus and helps me with anxiety and stuff. Its great for mental health and that clueless cunt actually said..it helps build up your immune system and fight the disease.

Sometimes it's the only thing that keeps me sane so I'm gonna struggle.

Plus I'm going to end up buying bigger pants.

"Wow just caught up on this thread it seems mental health is being used quite a lot lately to challenge people on here.

Plus I'm going to end up buying bigger pants."

I feel your pain Lionel

These 2 and a bit weeks have been a drag for me with no gym again

Knowing the end is in sight and having a fixed end date though has given a light atvthe end of the tunnel

I hope at the very least that Boris and co treat the English people fairly with a clear fixed end date which they must adhere to and not drag shit out and mess people about, which seems to be morr their style unfortunately

Have you always been an advocate for mental health?

Have you ever had mental health problems. ? "

A lad actually lost his gym doing that up here mate.

I know and it's awful. We just have a few tricks that worked all through last lockdown. As a competitive bodybuilder, I'm not stopping. There are ways around it. And we've done it and doing it again

If you have inside info that you would like to share privately, then I'm all ears!!! Lifting again after lockdown was pathetic and I was set back; don't want that happening again!!!

Vicky x

Why do you feel you are allowed to break the rules? just because you want to lift? do you think that's fair? .. on another note why don't you train outside instead? plenty of heavy things to lift outdoors and you get free fresh air too !

Job done and no harm done"

If you need medical intervention, you need medical intervention. If you don't want it, you find another way.

If there's enough provision for online learning, which there isn't.

If the education is of the same quality, which there might not be.

Education of children is an undisputed priority in any civilised country, where providing a subscription service for people to work out in specific ways (rather than adapting at home) is not.

I mean if your solution to the gyms closing is to sulk rather than adapt, and you think that the obesity crisis correlates with people going to the gym (a group of people who tend to be more health conscious and affluent anyway)... Ok whatever you like.

Public health isn't just about personal choice or risk.

If Covid isn't going anywhere, why are vaccine trials nearing completion? Why do the Isle of Man and New Zealand have no need for community isolation?

If you're strong enough to deal with Covid you're strong enough to deal with the gym being shut. Be strong. Be an adult. Find coping mechanisms and cope.

Have you checked the size of New Zealand to its population

And Isle of man is same as Guernsey and Jersey they have no cases nor have they had any because they stopped visitors in and out from January

As for a vaccine that's years off

And I dealt with it 6 months ago but it still doesn't make closing gyms the right decision

Only way to stop virus is to totally shut country down including emergency services and all utility companies and put everyone in house arrest for at least a month

Virus would be eradicated but wonder how many would cope ewith that

Honey I'm from Australia. I know what New Zealand did better than you do, because I keep up with news from home. And how the Australian state of Victoria had almost the same number of cases as the UK in July (much smaller population) and is now down to zero.

Gyms are closing. Cope

And restrictions on travel in and out... Yeah Australia has done that too. And when one of my parents nearly died in the summer I had to face the prospect of missing the funeral.

I held my breath. I cried a lot. I managed. Because I had to. The greatest good can hurt individuals.

I will cope as will everyone else but still doesn't make the decision right

And tell that to people who have lost love ones that haven't managed to cope during this shit storm

Or have lost family to other illnesses due to not being able to be treated because Dr's appointments were cancelled

We are still forgetting the other 615000 deaths a year from things other than covid

Sorry for your loss and agree we shouldn't of opened our flights for holidays this year as this has helped continue spreading the virus country to country

They ignore a lot of issues that contribute to making things worse during a bad time

It was a close call. My parent didn't die. But I wondered if I made the right decision early on when the Australian PM urged Australians to come home... And I stayed in Manchester. It was heart breaking.

I do background work helping isolated people in their homes, and their mental health burden has shot up. The weight I carry has grown a lot. And I won't stop, I do what I must to help them. Even though my hands are tied because of the pandemic.

I agree, the government are making an incredible mess of this. And I do sympathise, believe it or not. I lift heavy to cope with my lifelong anxiety/PTSD. Adaptation sucks. (But I also narrowly missed a panic attack the other day because raging pandemic and useless government)

If we all pitch in we can do our bit to reduce the spread. And get our lives back.

I admire what you do as someone who is on medication for mental health issues bought on by physical issues I know how having support is really needed

Gyms are a choice.

You can find other ways to work out. And other ways to mitigate your mental health.

Education can be done online at home so going out to schools isn't nessasary either"

Idea being work/ education is essential abs gyms aren’t same as hairdressers, beauty salons, spas etc social and leisure are all good for our mental health gyms are no different. "

You simply dont get the effect of a gym.

It not a thing that makes you feel better about yourself.

It's a place where I can get rid of the stress caused by work on any given day.

It's nothing like a spa or salons nothing at all like them.

Light therapy and supplement vitamin D. Workout at home. Meditation. Talking to people (talk therapy if necessary). Grounding techniques, self compassion techniques. Other forms of working out. Talking and laughing with people. Pets are great where possible. If symptoms persist seek medical attention.

Most of this is cheap or free.

Have had mental health issues since childhood. Have found ways to cope all this time. Gym is one of many supplements to a healthy mental health strategy. If you only have one coping mechanism you need to work on that. Life throws curve balls.

Shrug.

I've been told all my life to just have a positive attitude, that medication is poison, that therapy is tea and sympathy for wimps, that I should suck it up, that I should be grateful and not unhappy because starving kids in Africa.

Now the people who've been telling me this for 25+ years have a tiny taste of my life, they need their exact demands met or else their mental health will fall apart, and being given real advice from those who've figured it out for all our lives is unwelcome because they want what they want.

I'm sorry people are unhappy about gyms closing. I am too. But suddenly caring about mental health now, and dismissing a lifetime of coping mechanisms because it isn't exactly the pony you want for Christmas... Sorry not sorry. Deal.

One thing I’ve learnt in life is that every individual is different to the next. What works for one May not necessarily work for the either. You do what works best for you and let others do the same. Don’t try and force your opinion on others.

Why do you feel you are allowed to break the rules? just because you want to lift? do you think that's fair? .. on another note why don't you train outside instead? plenty of heavy things to lift outdoors and you get free fresh air too !

Right so really quite a lot of this is 'my club' in other words you own the joint? So you are bound to say all that .

Regardless of what you think of my opinion .. you snakily continuing to do what everyone else has been told not to do makes you part of the problem ..

So I will say this .. if you REALLY don't wish to be part of the problem and you still insist on breaking rules .. would you sign a waiver to all NHS/Government support if you or anyone in your family/bubble get ill? Given the comments, you made about your 'need' to break the rules and the fact that you say you are healthy etc.. shouldn't be a problem to do that should it ?

Death and chronic health conditions from other illnesses will be the lasting legacy of this pandemic and like hell am I going to be amongst those numbers.

Oh I wasn't arguing that point. I haven't broken the rules yet by the way. The gyms are still open!!! lol

Noooo, I was pissed at his 'well you would say all that' with regards to the state of our business affairs and the possible loss of our home. I don't lie. I am a lot of things, but I don't lie. Ever

Having read this thread word for word Id just say hard times are best faced together. Reading peoples statements, thoughts, actions and comments to one another there’s a really grim level of selfishness going on in this country.

Everyone is facing really tough times currently regardless of work, family situation, exercise regime or whatever. Nobody’s feelings are less or more valid than another’s.

When this is all over I wonder where my brain will be, on occasions I stop for a little while and think about those I’ve met who have endured the most horrific scenarios during this pandemic and in truth it’s hard not to fall apart. I question how myself and my colleagues have kept our heads together, in truth it’s as simple as kindness and empathy shown to each other. It’s the lack of judgement when one of us needs time out, it’s making the effort to empathise, it’s choosing to show kindness to those you know are struggling.

If this thread accurately portrays the National mood, attitude and outlook... honestly, we are all fucked.

Why does anyone think that gyms are the problem here ?

Oh yeh sorry Boris does, I very much doubt he has been in one ever, and certainly not during covid so he has no idea what goes on in there, or how most gym owners have tried bloody hard to keep us all safe.

The reason gyms are being closed is Boris has it in his head that they are an issue; and he has ABSOLUTE power now.

back bench MPs and saying they will vote against him but Labour will support him; of course they will its another failure and another nail in his coffin; but that will come long after many gyms and other businesses will fail, not that he cares about that either.

As usual you are spot on. I know that contributors to this forum are a small percentage of site members. But there seems an element who think that "swingers" are special people with open minds and hearts, allowing and encouraging of others to express themselves.... Yet... There are some exceptionally toxic people on here that i would struggle to find in my vanilla world. Sometimes looking in the mirror is the best way to self awareness.

A few weeks ago he was saying how important it was to have regular exercise.

I am sorry but we are not all in it together, just look at the news; parties all over the place, pub lock ins and bars busted by the police, illegal raves, groups partying in the streets; idiots marching in london etc etc. I will be working through lockdown as i had to in the last one, my only two releases from the shit of the last months have been an occasional beer at my local well managed and quiet pub and trips to my equally local and well managed gym !

All in it together ! yeh right, the twats will still be twats and the people suffering will be the rest of us !

I think this is a very sensible and poignant comment. We are all so worried that our gyms are closing, in truth it’s not the end of the world, we can run, walk, cycle, pull up, sit up, push ups etc, where there’s a will there’s a way. Let’s focus this back to reality, we have hospital staff who don’t have options or choices, in the thick of it everyday and whether we want to believe it or not this is just the tip of the iceberg. We are all pissed off with the virus, we all have opinions, everyone is entitled to them but surely we aren’t that selfish as a nation that we can’t all make sacrifices for the greater good.

We fully support the doctors nurses and all nhs staff, right now they need our support like never before, god forbid you need them anytime soon and they have a sign up saying sorry we are full.

I dont think it's an either or thing tbh.

The nhs should be treasured in this country and not subject to 6 year pay feezes. They should get every bit of help they can.

However a lot of people are gonna suffer with this

There was a lad on 5 live who suffers with severe anxiety/suicidal thoughts and the gym is his escape.

Maybe it is s bit selfish but it's a lifeline for a lot of people.

"All loads of cobblers

Shut gyms keep schools open where the rise in cases is coming from

I can go to work and travel all around the country mixing with 100s of people each day but I can't train in a gym that has every precaution in place to reduce infection risks

Education is necessary.

Gyms are a choice.

You can find other ways to work out. And other ways to mitigate your mental health."

The mentality of "gyms are a choice" is one of the main reasons this pandemic will never be controlled. If the nation was healthier, we wouldn't have to jump through hoops to control a virus that rarely amounts to more than the sniffles in people who take care of themselves. Most of the main comorbidities can be helped or cured by regular exercise but let's give people half price McDonald's instead cause y'know, obesity is always a good thing.

I have a fully kitted out home gym so it doesn't effect me and I'll be allowing any friends or family who want to use to do so regardless of lockdown rules.

And other ways to mitigate your mental health.

I have a fully kitted out home gym so it doesn't effect me and I'll be allowing any friends or family who want to use to do so regardless of lockdown rules."

Had to smile when I read this, the hospitals are close to full with COVID wards of people with the ‘sniffles’ . Nice to see your consideration extends to family and friends but alas not the rest of the population, top man you should be proud

I know about 25 people total who have had it, including myself. Luckily the worst any of us had was what amounted to a moderate case of the flu. Everyone else had little to no symptoms at all. The thing they all have in common is a decent level of fitness and all take steps to look after their health.

However at no point did I say everyone who caught it got the same result or that wards were full of people with the sniffles.

Bradford

If I, like many hope that gyms are going to be open before the new year I suspect we are all going to be disappointed; Boris seems to be so anti-gym in his speeches I cannot understand it.

Oh and a person I work with thinks that the University gyms are staying open !

As students use them as part of the sports courses - I would love to know if this is true !

Central

Not all gyms are closing, as elite sports people can still train

In that case your lucky, my other half had it in April, had to go to hospital, still not 100 percent. Oh and she and I both run sub 1.45 half marathons for the last few years and also go to the gym, not overweight either so it just shows how it effects different people
