In other news in the guardian today... A study yet to be peer reviewed is concluding 80% of cases since summer have been a new strain 20A.EU1 originating in Spain.

Unsurprisingly govt travel policy (as much as one existed) is considered to have led to the spread of this strain.

Saw it on the FT too, tbh there's been many who have travelled and been sensibly but many in here rightly did say about the potential in certain places for this once the cheap beer kicked in..

Important quote from the Guardian article before anyone gets too hyped up about this and the vaccine:

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Dr Emma Hodcroft, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of Basel and lead author of the study, stressed there was no sign as yet that the strain was more dangerous that other variants, or that it would hamper the development of a vaccine. “It’s not very different from the variants that circulated in spring,” she said.

It's a very slightly different strain but the vaccine target antigen (spike protein) is still highly conserved

We've had many months now to review what we've been doing, our results and any evidence and yet we've made mistakes repeatedly, including failing to plan and resource appropriately, change course quickly and to invest appropriately.

We may have this newer predominant strain here but you could almost be forgiven for thinking that we've only just found out about this coronavirus. Perhaps amnesia is a side effect of it, that's been overlooked?

It's fxxxing frustrating isn't it.....? And the excuse it is novel... Yes it is... But ffs.... We still don't have testing at airports... Still aren't enforcing... And rules are getting more and more convoluted...
