Deep Penetration or just in the Entrance!

I had an Office of National Statistics Covid Swab and followed the video and the ONS representative insructions by just running the tip of the swab round the inside of both nostrils after gagging on it at the back of my mouth. The following day I had to have another hospital nhs swab but with this one, after the mouth gagging it had to go about 2.5 inches up my nose making my eyes water. Needless to say the results don't 'talk to each other' but any ideas why the methods of nose swabbing are so different??

Training for swabbers at mobile testing sites was deep penetrative

I'm guessing that they would prefer an ineffective test done, than not at all, if someone was deterred by deep penetration. Otherwise it seems a silly venture, to give false negatives, which would help infection levels climb.

North West

The self swab instructions at drive thru test sites and the hospital swabs I had were all deep nose testing. Not sure how accurate the entrance-only test would be, as viral load there is likely to be low due to fewer ACE-2 receptors in that area.

Lifes departure lounge NN9 Northamptonshire East not West MidlandsMidlands

I have had two recent hospital tests,

On both the nostril tests were eye watering and certainly the throat tests were indeed gagging.

Happy to say both tests were negative.

Thank you. As I understand it, The ONS study is the biggest swab test study so you would have thought they would have used the deep penetrative method. The efficacy of that study concerns me especially as it involves cash for tests. I have just spent my first £50 voucher!!

I work on a Covid project. there is a video: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-for-taking-swab-samples

This shows correct way. Basically, if it’s uncomfortable then your doing it right

Manchester/London

I’ve performed over 600 swabs now and every time, except with one person whom used to box and so the internal trauma made it impossible to swab without causing damage, I’ve swabbed the (Nasopharynx) back of the nasal cavity. It’s not painful, just a weird and uncomfortable feeling. I’ve also had to swab myself to demonstrate over 50 times. I feel like a nasal slut!!

Well...I have just followed the ONS to another Gov site video and where it shows and explains that just the tip of the swab goes up your nostril...certainly not uncomfortable.
