You have the COVID app, you just didn't know it...

So, I'd like to think we swingers are a liberal bunch, but what do you think about this...

An NHS doctor told me that you don't have to download the COVID app to your [Apple] device, it's already been put there. 'Rubbish!' said I...until I looked in 'settings' on my iPhone 6s and there it is. I 100% did not download this, even after a few ciders last weekend!

I don't know whether it's happened on other platforms, e.g. Android but I guess it's possible.

So, putting your opinions about the app and it's usefulness aside, the focussed question for this thread is: how do you feel about something being downloaded to your 'phone, of this nature (i.e. a tracker) without being asked?

I should point out that one actually has to turn it 'on', the default state is 'inactive'...but still...

It is the framework that allows the NHS (and others) to work if you choose to install them. It does nothing unless you make the conscious choice to install something that makes use of it. Even then, you have the option to turn Bluetooth on and off at will to prevent the proximity tracking should you so desire.

You probably didn't ask apple to track your movements, record your web searches and other things you really don't want to think too much about.

If you use any phone you're tracked and I don't believe there is any way to get out of it apart from leaving your phone at home.

It's effectively now part of iOS, in as much as the ability to send text messages/make phone calls etc. Part of the product, if you will. As others have said though, it won't actually do anything unless you download one of the apps that make use of it, similar to how something like Strava, or maps, makes use of location services.

Central

Many things that we acquire have active or latent component or full features for services that we may or may not have wanted or ordered. It's standard too for operating systems to have updates to their underlying architecture, or for new capabilities to be as added. Sometimes these will be prospective, hoping to seed or cultivate interest or may be preparatory, allowing the framework to be certain to work, whilst the rest is constructed.

Users get some ability to decline updates but doing so may leave them open to vulnerability.

Android and Apple launched updates to their operating systems earlier this year that included the capability to support track and trace systems. They didn't provide the software applications that would run using that capability, leaving that for states to commission them.

Some manufacturers sell their wares with bloatware, typically lots of apps that they may get some kickbacks from. It's not that unusual for phones to have apps on them that you never asked for or wanted. Not using them is typically all that you need to do, to keep them inactive.

If you don't install and activate the NHS Test and Trace app, adjusting your settings for each feature, you'll not be helping the country.

Keep an eye on what your tech is up to

My understanding is the app is like a conduit for constant running water.

The information is always being gained, the app catches it for a specific purpose.

However the whole family had to take a test last week, everyone except me got a negative notification via text, I however got a text giving me no option but to download the app to see my results. I knew immediately I had tested positive!

Not in my case.

I don't need the app because I socially distance, wear a mask and don't go to restaurants/ pubs/ others.

Lock down or not I am happy staying at home ta

But yeah it was in the Google play update, you still need to opt in (actually download a compatible app) then switch settings on, go places, scan in and hope it works

No, like when you buy a new printer for your laptop but it doesn't work until the driver is installed. Where as a driver allow your computer to talk to the printer, this "Service" allows any Track'n'Trace App to talk to the hardware in your Phone.

No, the app is not there, iOS and Android have a feature capable of detecting the Bluetooth devices around you, without the app the devices are not being detected, neither the data stored, without the app your phone won't get a notification, without the app you cannot report that you have been positive, say that your phone has the app because has that feature is like saying that your phone has all the maps because has a GPS feature, without Google maps/apple maps or similars

Ffs ... they need to start introducing tests and licences for using the internet to stop this stupidity. No app updates included “health notifications” they included access to the Bluetooth systems allowing other apps to access the feature. It cannot be used without you installing an app that has been given access to it, and you have to connect that app to it when downloaded to enable the process..

It's actually a lot worse

Your phone contains the necessary hardware and software to watch and listen to everything you do every minute of every day.

Have you ever spoken to someone about a product or service and next time you look at Facebook or whatever you see an advert for that very thing ?

Sandra is listening.

Unfortunately no matter how much I talk about sexy women nobody has offered me a free trial of one on Amazon.

That’s not true!

That was the case back in May when the update was introduced and everyone had exposure notifications installed with an update and this would allow track & tracing via 3rd party applications - that was phase 1

Phase 2 however which started in August with another automatic update on IOS and Android phones allows to opt-in to coronavirus exposure notifications without need of a third party app (this is published on Apple.com website).

BUT

In October Apple introduced IOS 14 and that version of the operating system contains a new privacy-preserving system that allows users to prevent tracking from advertisers.
