R rate going up.

I know that the majority of us are wearing masks and being very sensible about the current situation.

However, can the parents of children please ensure that they are either at home or if they are playing out that they are not mixing with their friends.

I know it's a lot to ask however I'm sure that we all have elderly relatives and vulnerable people that all need protecting.

Countless times I go out maksed up and see groups of kids who aren't related walking round without masks and mixing and hanging around with each other.

We will never get the R rate down if kids are out mixing with their mates and then taking it home and spreading it to everyone else.

School have systems in place to help maintain social distancing and mask wearing etc I'm on about after school where groups of kids meet up and are socialising in the streets and not wearing masks.

Within the schools yes, once they leave those school gates they are not required to wear masks just like everyone else on their walk home.

Nope sorry. If my kid can sit in his classroom with all his mates, no masks (which are in fact discouraged at our school) & no social distancing. He can go play with his mates at the park since he spends all day with them anyway

Then the parents of the children need to highlight this to their kids about how serious the situation is and then maybe they will wear their masks too and from school.

I'm actually on about kids being in groups and gangs after school not in uniform knocking about with each other.

Maybe these kids should be stopped and fined for not adheering to the regulations. The fines would be passed onto the parents and then maybe quickly there will be a change in attitude.

39% of new infections are from schools - schools should be shut. All the tiers in the world won’t matter with schools open. There is no social distancing nor is there special processes in schools.

My lad is fully aware of the seriousness of the situation. So why should he wear a mask outside when adults aren’t required to do so ?

Up until this evening they were following the rules and allowed to meet up outside with other households up to groups of six, just like adults so what are you fining them for when they haven’t broke any of the guidelines ?

So approximately 6 X more people died at the start of the Virus but we have a total infection number of more than double of what it was. ??

Well we’ve had no cases in schools here at all. The processes are in place for their year bubbles. Schools shouldn’t close at all, why should the kids lives be out totally on hold so adults can go about their social life ?

There is no social distancing .... year bubbles are hundreds and any one case doesn’t need to be disclosed. The only way to reduce the growth is to close schools so there’s a choice we all head to tier 3 or schools close for a few weeks. There are so far over 100,000 infections in school age children in the last 2 weeks - one third of the overall infections.

I think it depends on your school. Ours is very strict... separate entrance for each year group, masks to be worn until you reach your classroom, those year groups are restricted to the same floor all day, the teachers move not the kids, PE is split into even smaller bubbles, lunch is separated and cleaned between each year group along with staggered arrival and leaving times - we’ve had no cases in the six schools where I live since the return

We have staggered start times & juniors go in a separate gate now to infants & high school uses the back & main entrances. They don't allow masks once in school & the year groups use separate parts of the playground & fields. Parents now aren't allowed into the playground at morning drop off but it works way better than ever lol. We (surprisingly) haven't had a single case in school so far & it's nursery right through to year 11. Several other schools here have tho

Depends what you want to achieve - closing businesses and keeping schools open is pointless. Not allowing households to mix but keeping schools open is pointless. The current method of tiers won’t make any difference if schools are still open.

Again depends on your school, we have restricted class sizes so our years are 60-80 children

If you close the schools you should close all adult interaction to or is that more important than a child’s ?

Depends what you want to achieve - closing businesses and keeping schools open is pointless. Not allowing households to mix but keeping schools open is pointless. The current method of tiers won’t make any difference if schools are still open. "

But closing schools just so businesses can stay open, adults being able to have a pint, go out for a meal, mix with other households, go to the gym etc does make a difference? In my mind it doesn’t. How long do people expect kids to stay at home indoors and lacking the social and education a school life provides just so adults can go about their lives normally?

There are no easy solutions and we are aware this is here for a very long time and everyone is going to see it differently.

Surprised by the no school cases where you live. We've have multiple bubbles, classes out, individual children home and isolating. Following all the same rules as outlined above.

Every school I know about has had at leave one bubble out.

And yes bubbles are separated, but the bubbles are year groups consisting of 120 kids in each. That's 120 possible households effectively mixing.

I get why schools are open, but it really doesn't help stop the pandemic.

Where we are our cases are very low in a densely populated area and none of them are in the schools as yet.

"Then the parents of the children need to highlight this to their kids about how serious the situation is and then maybe they will wear their masks too and from school.

I agree but to close businesses and keep schools open will only hurt and won’t make the infection rates drop. It’s all or nothing imo. I think Bojo is hoping the one week half term will help

It really is a tricky one with the school's isn't it? I don't think they should have gone back in September but closing them now when the kids have settled into new routines & carrying on with their education is a bit umm late? Pointless? Backward? Not sure which word would fit best.

If the school's close again that screws a lot of working families as they then either need to get childcare or hope they can get time off.

Bit damned if they stay open & damned if they close.

They do, you just have to realise that the parameters have changed, so the numbers are not comparable.

At the start the only people getting tests were people that were getting hospitalised (so already in a serious condition), now pretty much anyone can get a test no matter how mild the symptoms.

So basically we are now catching a lot of mild cases that we would have otherwise missed before.

The only way to compare to at the start is to see how many people are being hospitalised with it... not I'm not sure those figures are available.

My son is out atm. He's 16, just had 14 days off school as there was a positive case, he's gone out with friends who don't go to school where he does anymore. We're in a tier 1 area, he has a mask and sanitiser. I'm happy he's gone out tbh.

Are you vulnerable?

Just wondering why you are going out masked..

I wear a mask because I don't wish to catch it simples. "

Masks wont stop you catching it, only a fully sealed o2 ventilated hood will do that...

Masks are to slow down us spreading it.

Love to know where you get your stats. In England, in the last week there has been:

5-9 = 1480 cases

10-14 = 2,843 cases

The next age group up is difficult because it's 15-19 and includes all those uni students as well as school kids 15 & 16. Total 14,807. Even taking that figure, that about 19k in 1 week. Previous week figures would have been lower. So, absolute max of 38k cases in last 2 weeks for school age kids plus first couple of years uni...

Total cases since feb don't even add up to 100k.

0-4 = 7983

5-9 = 7538

10-14 = 12174

15-19 = 53,226

Here during lockdown it felt like everyone in the neighbouring boroughs came to visit, it was busier on the streets / parks than I’d ever seen it. We didn’t have groups of kids hanging around it was groups of adults or families. The amount of times I had to cut our walk short as my lad was getting too wound up seeing people breaking the rules

Have you ever stopped mixing with your friends during a flu season in your lifetime ? I bet you have not.

I suggest you do some research into the R Rate and how it is calculated, Whilst you are at it, I would suggest you research the PCR test, its creator, why it was created, and its effectiveness, in detecting a virus, You are of course entitled to take all the precautions you deem to be necessary to protect yourself from any perceived threat, also by the same token everyone else is entitled to do exactly the same.

PS Median R rate for 2008/09 pandemic was 1.46, can't seem to remember face coverings, social distancing, curfews, collaborators, rules of 6, plastic screens in macdonalds, etc etc etc

"Have you ever stopped mixing with your friends during a flu season in your lifetime ? I bet you have not.

I suggest you do some research into the R Rate and how it is calculated, Whilst you are at it, I would suggest you research the PCR test, its creator, why it was created, and its effectiveness, in detecting a virus, You are of course entitled to take all the precautions you deem to be necessary to protect yourself from any perceived threat, also by the same token everyone else is entitled to do exactly the same.

PS Median R rate for 2008/09 pandemic was 1.46, can't seem to remember face coverings, social distancing, curfews, collaborators, rules of 6, plastic screens in macdonalds, etc etc etc "

It's not the flu

You don't need to be a genius to see that

However, can the parents of children please ensure that they are either at home or if they are playing out that they are not mixing with their friends.

I know it's a lot to ask however I'm sure that we all have elderly relatives and vulnerable people that all need protecting.

Countless times I go out maksed up and see groups of kids who aren't related walking round without masks and mixing and hanging around with each other.

We will never get the R rate down if kids are out mixing with their mates and then taking it home and spreading it to everyone else.

Did you mention it to the parents that they were disgusting ?

"So approximately 6 X more people died at the start of the Virus but we have a total infection number of more than double of what it was. ??

I'm no maths genius but the numbers do not add up. ??

They do, you just have to realise that the parameters have changed, so the numbers are not comparable.

At the start the only people getting tests were people that were getting hospitalised (so already in a serious condition), now pretty much anyone can get a test no matter how mild the symptoms.

So basically we are now catching a lot of mild cases that we would have otherwise missed before.

The only way to compare to at the start is to see how many people are being hospitalised with it... not I'm not sure those figures are available.

You can find that information on gov.uk, updated daily and many ways to break it out "

So you can!

I hadn't been on for a while and had missed that.

About 20,000 in hospital in March, 5,000 now (though rising quickly), so that does support what I was saying.

You are welcome.

There are a lot of cavats with the data, but we are roughly now at hospital admissions / ventilators being used as we were at end of May / beginning of June and rising daily

FFS leave them alone to be children it's hard enough getting them to exercise in fresh air these days as it is, keep them away from your frail elderly relatives or neighbours, get them to wash their hands regularly, cough into a hanky and use sanitiser out on the streets.

Boris has probably looked at peoples inability to understand basic rules at the start and come to the conclusion that education cannot be sacrificed at any price.

School have systems in place to help maintain social distancing and mask wearing etc I'm on about after school where groups of kids meet up and are socialising in the streets and not wearing masks.

Within the schools yes, once they leave those school gates they are not required to wear masks just like everyone else on their walk home. "

In tier 1 my daughter is allowed to hang with 6 of her mates. They go to school, travel on a packed bus and have been kept away from everything they love for months.

Until we are not allowed out I will be happy to let my daughter enjoy being 13 with her friends.

They are very respectful of others they see around the village as they know us mums will find out if they’re not.

Hate passive aggressive messages like this. Proper gets my back up.

Quick question.

Hopefully a sensible one. Every day we get these big numbers of people infected eg. 16 to 20000 or so at the moment. Within that number are there people going back for retests to see if they have moved from positive to negative after isolating ?

Just wondering if it skews the number a bit if that is the case ?

The added info to the numbers is:

Number of people with a lab-confirmed positive COVID-19 PCR test newly reported on Sunday, 18 October 2020.

COVID-19 cases are identified by taking specimens from people and sending these specimens to laboratories around the UK for PCR swab testing. If the test is positive, this is a referred to as a lab-confirmed case. If a person has had more than one positive test they are only counted as one case.

So yes the total cases overall could include the same person twice but the daily numbers only deals with positive results that day

This is utter rubbish. You have no idea about these kids circumstances. For example my brothers child is at school age 14 and his whole year group are in his bubble. Ie they can be in close contact with each other play around with each other and not wear masks in close promising with each other...
