Its has just been reported on ITV that 770 students have tested positive for covid 19 at Northumbria University in Newcastle.

That's why we are on local lockdown up there.

Time to shut down the universitys down for a while ?

I heard it on the news...I wondered who and when the thread would get posted

But seriously...your right it's going to be a big problem, and they cant keep them locked up for the whole winter.

It does need looking into urgently

Of course they have. They can't start without payment of first terms fees and accomodation.

My bad. I just don't recall giving my kid 9k or her having that money when she started at Uni. She must have been saving her pocket money

Well I have no idea about your personal circumstances. But I know that it's very easy to flippantly dismiss students. Many of them have worked hard to earn their places and to fund their places. Many don't have the luxury of parental support, either financially or logistically or emotional. Many have travelled here as overseas students. So it's not just 9k they are out. For some you can add in travel costs, moving costs, some have taken months of prep to move in, some have signed binding year long accomodation agreements with landlords that can't be broken. The day they start, they are committed to unis fees for the year (even though unis are providing little in the way of labs, practices and face to face) and have to pay each terms fees in advance.

Sure there are some Amy's and George's who are fortunate to be able to throw away that kind of money... But there are many who can't.

Ruffnsmov was being ironic. Students have loans to cover their fees. They just need to pay for accommodation.

To add, overseas fees are upwards £25,000 a year; they have to pay upfront and also have to pay for the visa application, secure English Language test they need etc. They also generally pay extra for 52 week a year accommodation rather than the term time only that most UK students pay for, because many of them cannot just pop home for Easter even in a normal year. It's certainly not cheap and at the moment, they are getting bugger all for their money. And of course, no-one is going to refund them.

Perhaps some people think that starting out your journey in life with a huge debt isn't wise.
