problem with the covid app......

Newcastle and Gateshead

People who test negative for Covid-19 are unable to share the result with the new NHS app for England and Wales if they did not book the test through the app in the first place.

The app asks for a code to register a test result but a code is only received if the test is positive.

Those who enter that they have symptoms without entering a result find a self-isolation countdown begins.

The Department for Health and Social Care said the app would be updated.

People who have been using the app since its launch on Thursday, and who had already booked tests before downloading it, have found that they are unable to stop the self-isolation countdown after reporting symptoms if they then get a negative result, because it does not come with a code they can share.

"That's so confusing as the app doesn't tell you that can't enter negative test booked outside it," said Prof Deborah Ryan, who originally contacted the BBC.

"And the app still tells you to quarantine if you entered symptoms. So this means I can't turn off the self-isolation alert in the app?"

The self-isolation alert cannot be de-activated in this situation.

In addition, tests taken as a result of the Office for National Statistics surveys, and those taken in an NHS Hospital or Public Health England lab, cannot be shared on the app regardless of the result, according to a tweet from the app's official account.

It is not clear how many test results would be affected by this.

The Department of Health said that using the app is "entirely voluntary" and advice to get a test or self-isolate cannot be enforced.

Tests booked via the app will have the results automatically shared with it, it said.

According to the data analyst App Annie the NHS Covid-19 app has been downloaded around 4m times so far.

"By downloading this app you are helping protect yourself and others. If you book your test via the app then the results will be automatically recorded in the app and the isolation countdown will be updated," said a DHSC spokesman.

The non-sharing was the whole point 'Privacy' The App expects 'us' to do the 'right thing'.

The NHS only get the information if a user presents themselves for test and only then - this was know before the app launch.

As the App is nothing to do with the NHS's own self-isolation programme the App doesn't have regard for that - It's NOTHING to do with the NHS. The frontage is just NHS Branding - Much like like the Badge on your car.

_________________________

. . . how the Google/Apple App works.

1. It does NOT send data to ANY Public Health Authority or Government Department.

2. It uses Bluetooth to detect the presence of another user of the App close by. (*this has limits see below).

3. Each user of the app is assigned a random number.

4. If one of those random numbers (users) has reported (in the app and only the app) that they have symptoms of Covid or have been diagnosed as having Covid then the App queries all other users that may have been in the presence of that user using an algorithm that counts thing like . . . Length of Time others may have been in the presence of . . . when . . . etc.

5. It then sends a Notification to all random numbers (users) that were near - date - time etc to that user. And advises that you then Isolate and look for symptoms in yourself.

6 It does NOT at any time inform a Local Health Authority or Government department.

7. The ONLY time that a Local Health Authority or Government Department can get access to knowing that a user has symptoms is when they present themselves to a Doctor or Hospital etc.

8. The VENUE Check-in Does NOT report to any ANY Public Health Authority or Government Department. It stores it on your phone which you can delete at any time. It will delete it after 21 days regardless.

9. You can turn tracking on at off at will. If you reboot your phone it will turn on automatically when you switch it back on again.

It totally relies on all of us doing the 'right thing' and to isolate if the app informs you that you have been in close to proximity to a user of the app that says they have symptoms or has been tested and they test says that they are positive.

*The Bluetooth inaccuracy problem - you can test yourself - if you have Bluetooth speaker connect and wander around your house - Bluetooth is very low power. Also Idiots may report themselves positive even if they are not, thus making 'responsible people' get tested or isolate. etc. People may genuinely mistake symptoms they have with COVID Symptoms and report false positives, again making other react in and inappropriate way.

PS. The app cannot access your Contacts or use your phone.

jesus wept ... site admin can we have a face palm emoji please?

do i really live in a world where people need a government approved app to count to 14 days or a negative test?

the app copes fine with positives... it only needs positives to track and trace ... so its a non issue

and if you need an app to tell you its safe to leave the house after a negative test then its probably not safe for you to go out unsupervised anyway

Then nothing wrong with the App having it too then. The developers put a countdown timer in to assist - so what.

well apparently it wont take your negative result, so it keeps counting down and people are dumb enough to think they have to stay home til the timer finishes ... wasn't that the summary of the OP?

i dont see a problem with the app having a timer ... i despair at people unable to have the level of common sense to know that just because the timer wont accept your negative result doesn’t mean you have to stay home like you have covid ... its an app on your phone with a function meant to help you keep track ... its not a timed bolt across your door

It was NEVER meant to. READ ABOVE.. It's Nothing to do with the NHS. So the App doesn't accommodate that feature.

No.

If someone reports on the app that they have covid symptoms the app thinks they have covid.

The person has a negative test. They can't input this on the app so the app still thinks they have covid.

The app will ping everyone who comes into contact with that person even though that person had a negative test.

The app asks for a code to register a test result but a code is only received if the test is positive.

Those who enter that they have symptoms without entering a result find a self-isolation countdown begins.

The Department for Health and Social Care said the app would be updated.

i did READ ABOVE where it clearly stated that the app asks for a code to register a result which is only available if positive, and that if you book through the app it will record your result automatically ... so i am pretty sure that would require a transfer of data to and from a testing facility

anyway the app has been live for just over 2 days was bound to have bugs (how often are you asked to update pretty much every app you own for bug fixes its standard practice) and its already been stated that a change will be put in ... i still think its completely a non issue

According to the developers it will only ping at a Positive result.

Another hitch is you scan into a Shop for example! but you cant scan out of the shop using the app. So for example you login at a pub at 630pm and leave at 7pm than someone with a positive test result arrived at 715pm you could get a call telling you to self isolate for 14 days.

This may/could/will provide a false number of people been called to self isolate example above. How does the app know you are not in the pub?

It will reset itself at midnight or when you next scan entry.

if you want any info about the new nhs app take a look at

wired Everything you need to know about the new NHS contact tracing app

it has an in depth view of the workings of it

also another problem with the app only works with newer phones not older ones

App doesn't work with iPhone 6 models or older

Another criticism raised against the app is its incompatibility with older yet still fairly common devices such as the iPhone 6. NHS COVID-19 also refuses to run on devices using Android 5.1 Lollipop and earlier. These accounted for nearly 15 per cent of all Android devices in April of this year.

Exactly, So you spend 15 minutes in somewhere and do not scan in anywhere else that day, the app still thinks you are in the shop!

But you would only scan a 'VENUE'. You don't scan shops - It's meant for Venues that would have you for more than 15mins at a time like a restaurant pub bar cinema etc etc. Shops don't need to track and trace VENUES do.

It's because those phones don't use the low power Bluetooth standard.

The likes of Boots, Lloyd's the chemist, WH Smiths and a few other retailers have the codes and are asking you to scan in. Some employers are even asking for a daily health check form and temperature check for both staff and customers! I did ask on Boots and they said that the more information that is collected helps track and trace!
