If you’ve been isolated for 14 days, you won’t have been in contact with anyone else, therefore the app will detect that and you won’t be contacted.... that’s how the contact tracing bit of it works

So if there's a wall between the two people, as in next door to each other, the bluetooth doesn't recognise the wall but the distance.

Also, if you are required to put your phone in a locker (some companies and establishments do this) and you may have no contact with anyone but your phone was near them, then it thinks you are near them. There are reasons why it should and has to be disabled otherwise the facility to turn on/off wouldn't be there.

This, at least, appears to be a voluntary download as opposed to the download embedded in phones in April.

However, apparently, i phones before 6s cannot download the app.

Yeah, it's track and trace but also seems a voluntary tag.

Why I asked, we are in the NHS volunteers app and that shows other responders in the local area..

Just read that if a recipient receives a notification to self isolate, the clock on the app starts etc but even if no symptoms or a negative test result then the app isolation clock still runs?

I was considering the App when they originally said it would tell you if you had been closer than 2 metres for longer than 15 minutes, because that was what they said would constitute close contact.

With the introduction of the venue barcode reader I'm now reconsidering because that appears to be a case of you were in the same building, no matter the size of the building.

I am on here as being pretty outspoken against the latter however and I am as my kids say a techie neanderthal but even I spotted the flaw I posted above..

If restaurants etc have the NHS QR code, you can sign in using the app, instead of writing contact info or using their own app. I'm guessing that this may boost downloads

You have to give it permission to use your camera for photos and video, which would allow it to scan QR codes but I'm sure some of those will insist it's to video our lives

I'm aware of that. I'm saying that just being in the same building is a lot different to being in close contact which was the premise of the original theory when the Apps were first announced.

My thoughts are whilst as pointed out any notice to isolate is voluntary which seems odd but even with a negative covid test the app isolation clock will still be running?

To myself that means it thinks the person is at home and won't then register of a person after a negative test goes out and might then come into another contact..?

Surely a negative test received would give the person the means to reset the

Yes got that ta, but if I am shown positive after being in Tesco Extra which is massive does a qr code and the app have the means to differentiate between that size shop and the average 'corner' shop..

I have downloaded the app this morning. Once I’ve been out and about I will be able to report back on first impressions. It will probably take a week or so to see how effective it is and how many people I am actually in touch with as they have to have the app as well. Test track and trace is in a mess. I hopefully this app will improve things.

I'd prefer it to be handled by Facebook. Not only do you know your data WILL be sold, you'll know who to and for how much

Why are people who have Facebook and report everything they do from what they had for dinner to how came out the other end, worried about their security?

I've jus installed the app. But before it did, when I went to Kiosk 4 (now 6) at PDI my Google would announce to the world that I was at a Gay Nudist Beach...

I don't allow apps access to my location, I don't switch on Bluetooth and location when I'm out.

So I can't see how downloading this app to my phone would do any good.

I also only go to school and a supermarket (mostly super markets deliver to me though in all honesty) so I don't think I'm the target audience either.

If testing is limited to those who show symptoms then we are alway one step behind the virus.

If we know who those people have been in contact with we are one step ahead of the virus.

I hardly ever leave the house but then neither did many of the elderly outside carehomes who died from the pandemic. So I have the app.

If you don’t wanna contribute to the chance - even slim - that we rid the world of Covid, you can just stay away from social places in my opinion. It’s boring but those are the choices we make. I also believe everyone working in public facing or environments with other people should be tested and need the all clear.

You’d not fuck someone if you thought they might have an STD, why would you happily interact with random people who might have Covid?

I’m talking about the QR bar code for entering various premises. Does it only contact you if you have been in close contact, or does it tell you to self isolate because you’ve been in the same premises.

What about people who choose not to have a mobile device?

Interestingly in Singapore where their app was launched in march the take up is only 20 percent and they are now looking at a wrist worn system to trace etc..

The apps only work if the majority download them, figures are low in all the countries who already have them..

Her nextdoor tested positive and she wasn't asked to self isolate.

I not sure, im guessing so because thats how it works if you have been to a pub let's say. Its if its been more than 15 minutes.

Interestingly in Singapore where their app was launched in march the take up is only 20 percent and they are now looking at a wrist worn system to trace etc..

The apps only work if the majority download them, figures are low in all the countries who already have them..

It's 2020, even my 90 year old neighbour owns a modern mobile phone.

For you personally it probably doesn't make much difference.

I leave the house for one of three reasons.

Once a month I buy groceries enough to last a month.

Twice or three times a week I go on a sunbed. I won't be let in inless I scan my QR code.

Once every two months I go into to work.

My main reason for downloading the app is to get the numbers up. If people read no one downloading the app they will see it as another flop and not download it themselves.

For myself... in 10 days time I will be on a plane (hopefully) and headed to a place where a similar app is mandatory. A place whose Covid-19 cases are falling almost as fast as ours are skyrocketing.

Every 13 days you might get a message telling you to isolate for another 14 days so you could never go for a walk or see family and friends.

Its only if you have been in contact with someone for more than 15 minutes.

Its not going to tell you isolate if someone just walks past your house with it. "

You seem to be the only person who has listened to how the app works, and only one person has so far picked up what you said.

It's funny how many on this site comment how poor the government's messages on covid are but cant even listen to a simple announcement, perhaps it's not the government that's at fault but peoples ability to listen or their desire to blame Boris et al.

What I do agree with is that people who have had Covid-19 and recovered should be put on a database and that they should not have to go through unnecessary restrictions.

Why a worker who has technically immune from the virus should have to stay at home when they could be contributing to the economy is beyond me.

I am self employed. If I don't work I don't get paid.

I have downloaded the app. Because if somehow I got infected I would want people who have been in contact with me to get tested before they unknowingly pass it on to others.

You only get contacted if someone you have been in close contact with has tested positive so you would have to self isolate.

The changes are this would be family member or work colleague so you would be contacted through track and trace regardless of whether you have the app or not.

Length of Time others may have been in the presence of . . . when . . . etc.

5. It then sends a Notification to all random numbers (users) that were near - date - time etc to that user. And advises that you then Isolate and look for symptoms in yourself.

6 It does NOT at any time inform a Local Health Authority or Government department.

7. The ONLY time that a Local Health Authority or Government Department can get access to knowing that a user has symptoms is when they present themselves to a Doctor or Hospital etc.

8. The VENUE Check-in Does NOT report to any ANY Public Health Authority or Government Department. It stores it on your phone which you can delete at any time. It will delete it after 21 days regardless.

9. You can turn tracking on at off at will. If you reboot your phone it will turn on automatically when you switch it back on again.

It totally relies on all of us doing the 'right thing' and to isolate if the app informs you that you have been in close to proximity to a user of the app that says they have symptoms or has been tested and they test says that they are positive.

*The Bluetooth inaccuracy problem - you can test yourself - if you have Bluetooth speaker connect and wander around your house - Bluetooth is very low power. Also Idiots may report themselves positive even if they are not, thus making 'responsible people' get tested or isolate. etc. People may genuinely mistake symptoms they have with COVID Symptoms and report false positives, again making other react in and inappropriate way.

PS. The app cannot access your Contacts or use your phone.

If so, I can see this being legally challenged as discriminatory (as the app isnt compulsory). We all know venues have the right of refusal, but if not on their T&C's then someone will look at it that way.

The advice that the government put out that I read was that venues should not make entrance conditional on using the app and that they should continue to take their manual records to retain, of those not using the NHS app

. . . how the Google/Apple App works.

1. It does NOT send data to ANY Public Health Authority or Government Department.

2. It uses Bluetooth to detect the presence of another user of the App close by. (*this has limits see below).

3. Each user of the app is assigned a random number.

5. It then sends a Notification to all random numbers (users) that were near - date - time etc to that user. And advises that you then Isolate and look for symptoms in yourself.

6 It does NOT at any time inform a Local Health Authority or Government department.

7. The ONLY time that a Local Health Authority or Government Department can get access to knowing that a user has symptoms is when they present themselves to a Doctor or Hospital etc.

9. You can turn tracking on at off at will. If you reboot your phone it will turn on automatically when you switch it back on again.

PS. The app cannot access your Contacts or use your Phone.

Interestingly in Singapore where their app was launched in march the take up is only 20 percent and they are now looking at a wrist worn system to trace etc..

The apps only work if the majority download them, figures are low in all the countries who already have them..

OK tech wizz....

Got the app.. Has a test button... Tried to enter my recent test and it refers to an reference number that would be on text from the test service with my results. I've had 3 tests and 3 texts... And none have this referencd on them.... Its not an issue for me... Nor am I thick... But wonder if its an oversight...

So the folk who are paranoid, and won't help the population, can stay home . As an ex business owner,I'd bar them immediately. As for discrimination, it's plainly not. You'd be refused entry for being a "covidiot"

So if u don't leave house, my Bluetooth is on and next doors delivery man has Covid. Then all of a sudden I would need to isolate and get a test. Just a bit bonkers to me. If you go shopping you are pretty much going to end up in isolation even if someone with covid was a good distance away.

No it won't. It works on the duration and proximity of contact. If its just a "glancing blow".... It will do nothing. If said delivery driver has covid and you stand within a meter for 15 minutes... Then yeah you may get a notification.

Every 13 days you might get a message telling you to isolate for another 14 days so you could never go for a walk or see family and friends.

Its only if you have been in contact with someone for more than 15 minutes.

Its not going to tell you isolate if someone just walks past your house with it.

Are you sure. I haven't see that confirmed with regards to the Q code system.

Yes my sister lives on the Isle of Wight so was part of the trial.

Her nextdoor tested positive and she wasn't asked to self isolate.

The QR bar code is for your convenience when entering premises where you need to record your presence. It is your choice to use it or give your details manually.

The contact tracing is automatic and records when you are in close proximity to a possibly infected person.

Anyone using the app is given an anonymous ID and it is that ID which is contacted and shared.

It is true, venue's can still accept people without the app. A bit silly really. Anybody who has tested positive or has been adviced to self isolate can just write a false name in the records and turn their Bluetooth off. So a risk to staff and customers. I'd like to see entry by app into all business premises a lawful requirement

Nearly lost my sister, three other close family albeit two were minor have had it so I don't downplay the risk nor that we need to get on top of this..

I think one can be extremely critical as I have of government failings in dealing with this yet still look at such things as this app objectively..

I think it's a much bigger issue than just branding some with terms as you have done, issues of trust in government are in many areas..

This app will help as part of the means to get this thing sorted however that is but it's a fig leaf if track and trace and testing are still a shambles..

Testing isn't a shambles. Its struggling. But it's still testing over 200k people a day. I agree it doesn't help. But the issue is whe tested positive, how many people then isolate.? You could argue... That there is little point in doing any testing of people dont isolate when found to be positive.

Track and trace depends on people providing accurate data, responding to the messages and then isolating. Thats an individual responsibility 100 %. Doesn't matter what flavour govt you have if people want to choose to break the rules... Its their fault.

The Government have stated that the app is only accurate to 1 in 3. That's pretty poor when people are being asked to isolate and lose their income. You could of course be asked to isolate any number of times.
