The thing to remember is that scientists can have opposing views, both evidenced based, but one has to consider the validity.

Anyway, the ministers are accountable not their advisors. It's one true thing Hancock has stated and restated and true

There are actually folks on the same committee who disagree with these two and have been muted.

Boris is being completly rolled be constant, fearmongering, second wave, second lockdown talk.

70% of folks think the circuit breaker talk is complete garbage and can't be policed.

Central

The government has looked increasingly through this disaster as glad to have scapegoats to blame. Pushing these 2 alone to make a pre-agreed acceptable to Johnson and Cummings briefing, provides a good opportunity to help do so.

The very recent hints that they seem to be dropping are that it's the public who are to blame and to try to frighten us with a future full lockdown returning if we can't behave. They've been trying to blame the public for trying to get too many tests, such as when they are asymptomatic, rather than the government admitting that they didn't plan and implement adequate testing and tracing quantities and abilities, for example.

Testing must be readily available very quickly and results very quick too, to ensure that the infected know it and are limited from spreading it any further. It's absolutely stupid to culture normality of people not being tested, knowing their status and then being no worse off, whilst they quarantine.

Instead we get the sticks being waved about of the £10,000 fines, to appease voters and to keep the blame on the people, instead of the government for not resourcing appropriate testing and tracing services.

Expect grave warnings, some blame hinted at and the fear being dished out of lockdowns again, when the PUPBLIC fail at what they should be doing.

You have to remember that there is a massive project ongoing to try to control covid, and still 25 people died and 4000 new infections were recorded. There are no figures for flu at the moment (as it's out of season) and the government isn't doing anything to reduce suicides. So really you're not comparing apples with apples.

Regardless of whether you feel that it's an overreaction or not. The situation will not change until the daily new infection rates are very low (below 50 possibly). The more people cry about the situation and refuse to play their part, the longer it will take to resolve.

A question that arose in my mind is why locations affect the level of antibodies?

Vallance stated approx 8% of survivors have antibodies but could rise to 17% in London. Without explanation. I have a couple of ideas but that is all they are.

I actually think Vallance maybe just giving the lowest of possible figures rather than a range. I think it's a case of keep an eye on global studies done at a high standard.

The suicide number is rather unlikely to start to double every week is it?

I think you are being disgustingly disingenuous with your figures, you are comparing a weekly suicide figure with a daily Covid deaths figure. The rolling 7 day Covid figure is about 100 deaths. Yes it’s below the suicide number but not by much and if the current trend continues Covid deaths will shortly blitz past the suicide numbers.

I'd like to know how the greatest rise was the 20-29 years age group, when the graphs of two weeks ago were the 10-19 and 20-29 groups but on closer inspection 17-21?

Yes it still includes 20-29, but the presentation diverts "blame" seemingly to a new group, from education age (further and higher) to young adults.

The average number of suicides per week in 2018, in the UK, was 131.

In 2019 the average number per week for England and Wales was 109.

I know how you are keen on statistics so how do you account for the numbers having decreased in the last 2 years?

It's just a pointless comparison.

We took extreme action to curb Covid deaths. If we went to a similar level of action on mental health support we'd get suicide numbers right down too.

People just keep falling into the 'numbers are low so what's the big deal' trap.

Having scan read BNF and Who's use of corticosteroids, I note that some viral infections are exacerbated by drugs such as dex. It is only to be used in cases of severe or critical covid, ie when benefits should outweigh harm. I realised there'd be contraindications (not just the one mentioned), cautions and side-effects, but that goes out the window when someone's life is in on the edge, like with the overactive immune system that isn't switching off the inflammatory response.

Hopefully that will be a point raised when we finally have an investigation into how this pandemic was handled.

They told my step mum very early on (4 days) into my dad's intensive care stay they had done all they could. He passed 3 days later. "

Sorry to hear that. Perhaps that point in time was pre dex use.

Unfortunately we all need to prepare for a minimum 6 months more of this chaos. Like Game of thrones "Winter is coming " and it's not going to be good! We had our chance to get this virus really on the back foot and keep it there but government's ignorance and incompetence has made the UK lockdown a total waste and failure. Sad to say it but give up on any plans of an improving situation before April next year. Take care folks and try to find ways for your mind to be positive. As the saying goes time flys. Unfortunately that only seems like it when times are good though. Stay safe, stay sain, play will come again. X

numbers are down in london yet the mayor wants another lockdown.

i think now we are being seriously lied too and this is becoming a way of controlling society with fear.

if they are so determined to control and stop this virus why are illegals still being taken in and housed. surely anyone you dont know has to be stopped coming into the country to stop the spread.

If we’re looking to Scandinavia for lessons fair enough but pick the best country not the worst

The comparison to Sweden is ridiculous, the population density isn't comparable to the UK. Plus I don't think a shrug and acceptance of vulnerable people being collateral damage is the way to go.

It has been rising in london over the last few weeks but the infection rate has been dropping the last few days in most of london. Still has one of the highest infection rates in the country.

An appalling act of misinformation, I hope it was accidental. Please clue up or shut up.

Thank you

"

Just to correct you the rolling seven day average death figure is 21.29 not 100.

The data and peer reviewed evidence is freely available, if you feel that there is a conspiracy giving you lies. Yoy don't speify which of the data are lies. I assume that you accept the major risez in positive infections in the last week or so and that, following the genetic stability of the virus, its high level of infectiioness, the experiences showing a lag between new infections and later rises in hospital treatment levels and overall deaths. It's so difficult to tease out rational thinking based on the evidence against the many conspiracy theories, some of them with very wild conclusions.

The overall outlook that bases anyone's behaviour and infection, however healthy they were previously, to increased risks to anyone who is more vulnerable, or healthy people who are unfortunate to be infected and left with long term or permanent illnesses or disability, is a cause for us all to take shoter term losses and charges to our lifestyles.

It's good that we are continuing to give accommodation to the homeless, as just housing the vulnerable homeless for the earlier period of the epidemic is very short sighted verging on cruel.

As earlier, the crux of our problems are infections gained here, a severe lack of testing and tracing, giving as near-immediate results back, so that people can be quarantined, recompensed to ensure the common good is served and local hotspots of infections from anywhere have resources focused on them to help to stop them spreading further.

Yes and oddly enough Spring follows Winter. I ask again again, 5 months of winter? I tell you what I'll respond to my own question cos it's obviously too hard for you: no winter does not generally have 5 months cos it doesn't run from Oct to beginning of march.

Although seasons don't have a definite start and end date, it is generally accepted that winter runs from and includes Nov to January. Spring can often be seen in February even if we have snow on the ground.

I'm now going to see what Google says

The seasons are defined as spring (March, April, May), summer (June, July, August), autumn (September, October, November) and winter (December, January, February).

It was weird he said that because when he put the slide up he laboured the point that this is only the predicted outcome if we keep going the way we are and what was definitely going to happen.

In a sense it won't be March. Firstly because the carehome madness shouldn't happen twice. Secondly we have Dexamethasone which reduces critical patient mortality by 35%

On the other hand we are going into winter, the flu season and a gradual reduction in Vitamin D production. On top of this we really can't afford to tell people to stay at home another 6 months on furlough.

Good news is that we can expect the first Chaddox vaccines to be available at the end of this year.

"125 folks died of suicide last week. Not to mention flu and influenza.

25 of covid.

Folks are completly covid obsessed Well we are told we are a few weeks behind spain and from the 14th to the 17th there were 603 covid deaths so i think its quite right we should still be covid obsessed.

In 3 days I don't think we will have no where near 603 deaths more like 100 if that. We are completely obsessed with covid."

thats nice you have a feeling about the number... how about some data or science to back it up?

Just watched sky news health correspondent raise serious questions about valances case predictions. As previously reported we are following the same trajectory as France and Spain.

Unless we deviate drastically they are predicting 10,000 cases a day mid October not the 50,000

I didn’t see the 11am briefing but if as someone earlier said valance didn’t say it’s a prediction why put that graph out.

It seems we have gone into Level 4. What does this mean? According to the scale I have it means relaxing restrictions stops and social distancing continues.

With so many new infections every day, that's very much a given. In fact surprising it's taken so long.

Didn't see this briefing. Was it just a case of be afraid? And be warned we will get stricter again soon? With a hint of it's all your fault, nothing to do with the government?

I haven't seen that chart for a while..what is level 5? As the infection rate r is definitely growing at a fast rate.

Wigan

The problem is this..

Total lockdown (which has been proven doesn't work, cases increasing with most of normality open for business. So lockdown for months again this time...

Economy colapses

Return to normal and and a shit loads of people need health care.. People hide away of their own choice

The economy collapses

A situation caused by an inability to actually do what was needed in January (get prepared) when it was known it was coming this way from China.

So now we have a continous shit show running the country

The point I was making, and which it seems went straight over your head, is that for someone who complains that people are obsessed with Covid, she certainly spends an inordinate amount of time commenting on it. Almost obsessively, one could say.

Has it registered now?

As soon as the clocks go back in october its not long after (November) I find that month particularly lonely and depressing dark from 5pm at night till next morning you rely on good weather or sunny weather at least in the day regardless it being cold or not after the christmas period which will be very strange this year and no doubt for most people I,m longing for the longer lighter days regardless of covid.

Last year there were 5691 suicides registered in England and Wales. That's an average of 109.44 per week. A difference of 16 people per week.

Last year no one on record died of Covid-19.

When suicides rise exponentially and flu stats are significantly higher year on year then they can take priority.

Right now we have a pandemic that's killed nearly a million people in less than a year. It won’t go away by pointing fingers elsewhere.

" Patrick Vallance saying: "The next slide is not a prediction..." then showing a slide with prediction without taking questions from the press.

Result: the media now keep showing the graph scaring people without explanation or mentioning that it "is not a prediction"...

It was weird he said that because when he put the slide up he laboured the point that this is only the predicted outcome if we keep going the way we are and what was definitely going to happen."

he said "this is not a prediction but a way of thinking about how quickly this CAN change" TWICE.

And instead of saying "But france & spain moved slower", which wouldn't damage public compliance, you made it a matter of *trust* which will.

Classic fear through "hockey stick graph".

An appalling act of misinformation, I hope it was accidental. Please clue up or shut up.

Thank you

Just to correct you the rolling seven day average death figure is 21.29 not 100."

Where are you getting that figure? It’s wildly different to the worldmeter figures

You picked the stats bullet brain.

You said 25 died in a week. That's 7 days. So 18 kicked off one day and during the other 6 days of that 7 day period 7 must have died. 18×7=25

You said it.

Now if 27 died the day before that 7 day period started it has nothing to do with the 7 days after where 25 died.

Very true but if we don't settle on a figure we can't move on from the pathetic pissing contest, although it does show some people up for what they are, i.e. it's more important for them to win an argument than to get to the right conclusion."

Some people will use any reasoning to dismiss covid as not being a big deal, even when deaths were at a much higher rate , there were excuses made.

It's frustratingly sickening.

in Lancashire

It's true to say smoking related deaths are X amount per year as it is with cancer, strokes and suicides etc..

But when such is regularly trotted out by some it seems to be only to excuse covid, put it in its place and get back to doing what they as individuals want..

Once covid for them is in that nice tidy place they don't have to think about, probably the same as malaria, child mortality in the developing world they can simply move on..

Their evident frustrations are that others see this different..

"125 folks died of suicide last week. Not to mention flu and influenza.

25 of covid.

Folks are completly covid obsessed spot on

How do 25 people a week die from covid when 18 people die in one day?

Well 18 die in one day and over the other 6 days 7 die. See. 18+7=25.

Thanks Einstein.

So 18 people died of Covid-19 on the 20th, 27 on the 19th.... not much point in continuing...

See? No you don't do you.

Yeah but it’s a handy way to work out all the folk you wouldn’t fuck if they were the last people on earth.

"I hope Boris is refreshed from his recent Italian holiday.

Did he go there for an eye test ?

It was Blair!!

"

Apparently so. To be fair the likeness is uncanny.

This is why it's important. The original comment makes it look like we are trying to save 25 people a week at the expense of 125 suicides. We must be nuts!

But when you break that data down the first stat ignores the fact that people were taking thier own lives before Covid-19. 109 per week which now makes it 16 people we would be losing to lockdown vs 25 saved....

Except the 25 figure is incorrect too. Since it is difficult to find a daily death rate for the last week, I have questioned the veracity of the statement since 18 people had died the day before, making it highly unlikely that only 7 people died in the preceding 6 days.

But it seems some of those amongst us feel the need to nitpick (which is against forum rules). So despite the fact that everything I wrote is correct, it is being pounced on for not being written in legalese. Its as tedious for me as it is for you. My apologies.

An appalling act of misinformation, I hope it was accidental. Please clue up or shut up.

Thank you

Just to correct you the rolling seven day average death figure is 21.29 not 100.

Where are you getting that figure? It’s wildly different to the worldmeter figures"

I'm getting that figure from worldindata, where I have always got my data from.

I've met thousands of people swinging and only a handful of them are on the forums.

But yes it's a great self filtering mechanism

I often correct people when they give out inaccurate data. It doesn't mean I'm dismissing the threat of covid, with the excess deaths it would be foolish to do so. If people are going to quote data then it should be accurate data that can be sourced. That applies to both sides.

There was a time that a person could post a link to backup what they are saying. Since this has disappeared the amount of made up facts has become so prevalent it's like being the only sober person in a party where everyone is blotto.
